  • Great song. In jr. high, this was the theme of our class variety show towards the end of the year. It started out with one of my classmates dressed as a senior citizen sitting in a rocker with a photo album reminiscing about the old days. The skits that followed were dreams of the days gone by. Those were the days.

  • I always cry when I hear this song. I'm an eight grader and there is only a week left for end of the term, so there is only a week left to leave my school which I went for 10 years! I just can't bare it... It is just too hard... I will never forget those times, we had soo much fun. I miss and love my friends, even though some of them doesn't love me equally... But I know that nothing is a end of something, but everything is a start of something. I hope I will get to say "Those were days."

  • my mum loves this song :)

  • Written by Paul McCartney.. ..never in the left door of a Huey!

  • @74norton850 Paul didn't write this. In the 60's he heard a folk duo sing English lyrics to a Russian drinking song and it stuck with him. After seeing Mary Hopkin on a TV show called Opportunity Knocks (a forerunner to the "Idol" shows today), he thought the song would be perfect for her. He signed her to Apple Records and produced the record, although he hired a professional arranger to do the orchestration.

  • for mother russia!

  • nostalgic

  • "Older but no Wiser". After 40+ years, I'm still in the left door of that Huey

I can relate to dreams of battles won and wars lost. I Dream of the past every night, but maybe not so pleasant as the writer's I reckon.

  • Memories, you cant take them away, wonderful memories with my cousins, those were the best days of my life. And no one will ever take that joy from me.

  • Wow, what memories. This came out when I was in Kindergarten, and our teacher used to play the record all the time. THEN, she tought us to sing the background childrens part, while she sang the main part !! we had a blast , and I"m sure that today everyone would be in a tailspin if a teacher sang a song about a tavern to a Kidergarten class !! It was not a problem in 1968 at PS 152 in Brooklyln !!

  • would someone tell me the meaning of " DOUBLE DOWN",please?

if there's anything rude here, forgive me.

  • @fallvn27 It means when you take on a challenge or place a bet and things don't go your way you double your effort or the size of your bet. It often implies someone who is doubling their commitment to a lost cause or a losing bet.

  • dedicated to all my former schoolmates..the SMACHIANS '91...especially those in the choir group. this indeed brings back our sweet memory in SMACH.

  • Did Paul McCartney wrote this song?

  • @bigran2007 Paul MaCartney produced Hopkin's recording, but he didn't write it. The English lyrics (the song was originally Russian) were written by Gene Raskin.

  • @v1de0gamr thanks for the information.

  • @v1de0gamr
