Hey ! Ive got a video of this species mating and Id like to link it your great closeup video... but when I try it doesnt work - do you allow video responses ?
Hey there Fluffy! How goes it in Port? You've met me a number of times, the most recent of which was while I was lecturing for a Uni program on the Mardja. You walked past with a group and we had a chat. Please feel free to link to my video. I will attempt to determine the problem with the video response facility. I'm heading back north soon. I'll have a beer with you when I'm back home.
yeah I kinda gathered that by the first comment you made! geezz! I also watched a document on T.V about them....and they said "The Cuttle fish is not actually a fish at all,it a Mollusk." Excuse me for making a mistake! good Lord! but i just love these Cuttle Fish!!
it wasn't trying to match the coral perfectly plus when a predator is near it sinks into the sand along with camo so the shark cant see the flaps- sharks dont have the best eyes either
One major difference is that squid are generally streamlined open-water swimmers, while cuttlefish are slower, floating animals that stay in the shallows near the bottom. B/c of this, cuttlefish have a large, hollow cuttlebone which squids lack, which they fill with gas to provide neutral buoyancy. They also have a "skirt" fin that goes all the way around the mantle, while squids usually just have 2 fins near the tip. Also, most squids have to keep swimming all the time to stop from sinking.
we shoot cuttlefish all the time when we go spearfishing, ive never seen one do something like this, thet are usually the easiest things ever to catch
Spot on mate, thanks for the very informative comment. Maybe the best yet. As you have set the tone of the discussion nice and high let me add that irridiophores are the reflective devices that reside beneath the chromatophores. The system is very much like the silvery layer under an LCD that allows you to see the display with ambient light.

they can create instant color-pattern-and contrast change and even optical illusions!!! If anyone leaves near the DC area you should come to the Zoo and see our cuttlefish there for yourself (we have three adults [two females one male] and our babies just hatched about a month ago and they are so adorable!!!) Yes i work at the zoo.. INVERTEBRATE EXHIBIT MUST SEE!
I can attest to the quality of the exhibit. This invertebrate display was wonderful, from an octopus to cuttlefish to chambered Nautili to beautiful coral reef set ups, even a prawn!
Better than the so called "national aquarium" in Baltimore, which was a disappointment, where almost all their displays had fake corals and rock work.
I can explain how they change colors like that: There are two things that make it change color (which is does faster and in more patterns than any known animal on earth minus chuck norris) First cuttlefish have over 20 million Chromataphores [which are pigment cells that create patterns], and under those are reflective cells. Also they can manipulate the skin it self Creating very defined bumps or staying completely smooth (which is the normal mode).
isnt it that they have colored tissue that can dialate by muscles pulling on it like a trampoline? or is that an octopus...either way cuttlefish are bamfs
no not really most of the camouflage is due to the symbiotic bacteria by the intermixing of chemicals they synthesise and other chemicals it synthesises itself...and changes light contrasts using its cells called photophores which are also capable of changing the shape and pattern
actually that also is incorrect, well some of it. The eyes of the cuttlefish detect the light/dark difference between whats below them and whats above them. Since their CNS is was drives the colour change it can happen instantaneously. They use their muscles to a certain extent, but not so much like a octopus. Rather the pigmented cells (chromatophores, or more specifically melanophores) are able to disperse or aggregate the pigment inside those cells. If they are more dispersed they appear
darker and if they are more clumped together they appear lighter. Along with these melanophores there are another type of cell called irridiphores which have irridescent characteristics. These cells are surrounded by melanocyte pigments to again, if the melanocytes are aggregated, more light enters these irridiphores displaying a specific type of colour, if they are dispersed, less light enters and the colour is duller and more matte. :) This isnt very energetically costly however changing the
