I admit to a prejudice in listening to this, because I have heard the version by Hoyt Axton and Linda Ronstadt from vinyl many times. As has been pointed out, the mix is bad and they are not in a studio. But I also agree that their voices and styles fit poorly in this performance. Both have sung many beautiful duets with others, but not here.
I just rediscovered this song a couple of days ago when I heard a version of it on a local folk music show. Does anyone know if Ms. Baez ever did a sols version of this song?
Cool thing about Youtube is you can compare diffrent versions of the same song. I think this one is just as good as the Rondstadt duet. She and Joan both have great voices.

une fois de plus Joan Baez chante comme une chèvre, ses vocalises ridicules dénaturent cette excellente chanson, pauvre Hoyt Axton, le diva a encore sévi, pareille mésaventure ne lui arrivera pas avec Linda Ronstadt.
Not only does Baez not blend well with Axton, but that danged harmonica drowns out both singers to the point that it's hard to tell what exactly the problem is.
I think that Baez is under rehearsed in this performance, as she seems ill at ease.
This is the first time I'm hearing this song - but just before reading your comment I was enjoying the easy and very tight rapport between Joan and Hoyt in their singing! I guess it's a matter of taste.
Thanks for posting this. Always loves Joan and Hoyt singing together. I wish there were still shows like "The Midnight Special" now, where people could just get on and jam and sing whatever the hell they wanted, not just promote their latest hit.

Joan baez's voice is not suited for this song to begin with and she completely drowned out Hoyt Axton's voice.

Having listened to them again, I agree with you guys. Linda Rondstadt does blend better with Hoyt.

Prefer the Gail Davies version to both these duets

Nice version although it is true that Joan doesn't harmonize very well with Axton.

Its the mix and remember this is live and the version with Linda was recorded in A&Ms killer sound studio.
I must agree with Linda Ronstadt when she recently proclaimed " I've always been a dribbling, drueling Baez fan."

Nice version but as a matter of taste I still prefer the Axton Rhonstadt one also.

Joan Does a pretty good rendition of this song with Hoyt, but Linda Ronstadt's version is exponentially better.

Baez is one of t-h-e great female singers of the '60/'70's. However, she just does n-o-t harmonize / meld with H. Axton on this song!

What you tell isn't right. I became this Video on a CD of a good friend, not from your channel.
