About 1:12 you can discern the black spots on the white outer tail feathers. These black marks are the Downy's signature, for those of you scratching your heads about his ID. Apart from a Hairy not having those spots, a Hairy would be much less likely to land on your hand; plus he'd be bigger; plus a Hairy would have a bill which might make you hope the woodpecker wasn't going to presume any familiarity that was more than skin deep.
black capped chickadees are known for being very tame..pileated woodpeckers are notoriously secretive...not sure about other woodpeckers. excellent video
My mistake that comment and question was meant for the person that made the clip. Very interesting though, great job, please post more of those videos.
@nddj that has to take hella patients to get the birds to trust you enough to come eat from your hand. How much time and patients did it take for them to trust you, and have you ever been bit by the birds?
do you look at them while they are feeding off your hand or look away so they don't get scared?
I'm thinking about trying to hand feed, but i haven't gotten there just yet. I had a chickadee land right on top of a potted plant over my head yesterday, but that's as close as he got.
That is a HUGE downy, I had one that didnt want to leave my hand today after it hit my window, it sat on my middle finger for all of 15 minutes and it didnt mind me walking around, opening and closing doors or watching TV, it didnt even seem to mind my dogs all that much, just acted like it was going to fly away a couple of times when they went by
That's a plastic hand that you buy at a Halloween store....I can tell by the way it is shaped....but still, very clever to put a video camera next to it.
@TdotSoul Where do you live? I live in Hocking Hills Ohio; I get a variety of woodpeckers, usually downy or red bellied, as well as tufted titmice, nuthatches and chickadees most often feeding on my deck where I lay seeds. I'd like to try this, do you have to be still for a very long time before the birds feed out of your hand? Sorry about all of the questions I just love this video and want to try this!
Wonderful! I have heard that chickadees will land on your hand for food. Were you as surprised as I was to see that big ol' woodpecker just get comfy on your hand? Great contribution to birdie clips.
0:34 !!!!!!!!!!! LMFAO! The chickadee landed but the woddpecker just took over lmao!!
Chick: "Yes! All Min-"
Woodpecker: "COMING THROUGH!"
Chick: "bitch!!!" LMFAO!!!!! omg!! it all happened so fast but you can just tell what they're thinking XD Yeah, i love animals especially birds, I should go down there more often but I have to walk along Victoria road(all those cars and trucks so close to the side of the road- it's scary) When the woodpecker first came to my hand I thought it'd hurt XD
@nddlj lol imagine if he pecked your hand? You should hitchike there! I'll probably be there on Saturday afternoon, lol. I had a nuthatch land on my hand twice when I was there, but they are difficult to coax.
@TdotSoul yeah I should go there more often just for fun but I go through hell getting there arrghh!! It's actually so fun birdfeeding. I love the close interaction with birds when I go there. Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a nuthatch before. Thank god its the holidays now so I can spend my weekends birdfeeding and not studying!!!! but it's so damn cold lol! Btw, do you know where to find Cardinals? (they're my next art piece)
I went to Lynde Shores (pretty much my backyard) to study Blue Jays for my art piece. When I went with my friend a few weeks prior, only chikadees came to my hand-we went deeper in the woods. But when I went this Saturday I stayed by the parking area and I went all "WTF?!?!" when this woodpecker perched on my hand(first time). I like how the Downy stays on your hand longer. And yeah, Chicks are so nice! I walk into the path and there's a swarm above my head waiting :)
@nddlj lol I know right? Lynde Shores is awesomesauce! I haven't been yet this year though. It would be cool to have a bluejay feed from the hand but they are way too intelligent to trust a human.
Where do you live at? I get tons of chickadees and downy woodpeckers that feed off of my deck where I live in the woods. I'm going to have to try this!
nice video! i feed them too and it only took me 2 weekends of patience to get them eating from my hand. and now, some of them will actually wait for me at the door when i head out to fill the feeder, lol.
chickadees are fearless. ill be smoking a cig on my deck and they will land right next to me and drink out of the water trap in the hummingbird feeder, then look at me like "what?"
=D I love it! I feed chickadees all the time as well. There are certain areas around my town where they're tamer from prolonged exposure to humans. That's really cool that you got to feed that woodpecker! I think the coolest birds I've gotten to feed besides chickadees are nuthatches and a red-winged black bird. =P <3
Wow those chickadees have guts to fly on a human's hand. Although I have never seen them before in real life, I agree they are a nice bunch of birds in the wild.
I had a few chickadees eat from my hand this afternoon while hubby and I were on a walk. What a thrill it is! A hairy woodpecker too now that is something else! Way to go!!
Oh, I am so jealous! I'm sure you feel quite blessed by the trust of these small creatures. The Downy eating from your hand is surprising; he is incredibly handsome! It is wonderful of you to share this experience on Youtube. Thank you!
Okay, I would have been *just* a little startled if that big woodpecker flew onto my hand. XD Those chickadees are sweethearts -- I never have enough time in the morning to stand still to try and tame them, but they definitely come to the nearby branches when I fill the feeder. I really want to try and get them to eat out of my hand one of these days.
I was just feeding chickadees out of my hand this morning. I filmed it with my Iphone and posted it. I'm going to do it again tomorrow for a better video. Black oil sunflower seed or UNSALTED peanuts work best. Also it's easier to do away from feeders. If your around feeders they will usually prefer the feeder over your hand. If you find a good concentration of them in the woods and some patience you can feed them by hand.
Great Video! I love feeding chickadees whenever I get the chance! Sometimes nuthatches fly into my hands as well. I generally like going to High Park to feed them cause they're pretty tame there. :)
Chickadees will defintely do this. I hand feed them all the time. I have my own video of one coming to my hand. Chickadees are very tame and inquisative. They're very light, you can barely feel their weight when they land. Chickadees never nip your skin, they grab the seed and take off right away.
Thanks for posting this. Chickadees are very bold and WILL land in your hand if they think there is something to eat there. I feed them all the time, either unshelled peanuts, but they prefer unshelled sunflower seeds. Thanks for sharing.
Haha not very long, this population of chickadees is accustomed to humans, If they are really hungry thet will be doing touch-and-go's and fly-bys on your head before you can even get the seed out.
Cool, but I still think it's fake! The only way you can prove that it's you hand is to either have someone filming you or just move your hand when you're done.

I dunno...I think I believe it. Chickadees and some other birds like Chipping Sparrows are kind of bold. With lots patience, they can be coaxed onto the hand (my old co-workers son was good at it). But it can take weeks....
I have a lot of birdfeeders also and a lot of chickadees come to feed. How long did it take for you to get them to feed out of your hand? They are the cutest little birds.
Awesome! I feed the birds all the time in my backyard but have never tried to get them to eat out of my hand. You are very lucky. Those chickadees amaze me how they fly in for one seed and then fly away. Seems alot of work for just one seed. That was nice to see the woodpecker as well. They love the suet basket here and the snackbar with lots of nuts in it as well.
That is way too awesome. I've had black-capped chickadees and a red-breasted nuthatch land on my hand and eat. They feel so funny, so small. I've recently become...I suppose what one would call an official "birder"...it's a cool hobby. Only thing is I went from feeding a couple birds in my backyard to building a whole sanctuary. There are so many birds, I have 7 squirrels, even a bunny. Hee-hee, oh well...I've always been nuts about animals. They're a big part of my life.
I'm in the midde of a residentia semi-urban neighborhood so I have to go esewhere to see all these animals :( The first time I ever went to the location in this video, A white-breasted nuthatch landed on my hand for a good few seconds, and only once since that time has a nuthand done a quick touch and go.
Thanks for sharing this... this video is my cats favorite TV show. I blow it up to full screen when the weather outside is horrible and she doesn't want to go outside. She just sits there staring her head turning to follow the chickadees as they fly out of sight.
yeah, she chatters and gets excited. It's really cute. We get a lot of chickadees and downys in our yard, too. I'm good about feeding the bird camp and putting the feeders out of the cat's reach.
Never had them so tame they'd eat from my hand though, you're very lucky. My hubby and I love watching the birds and keep lots of seed and suet for them.
Thanks again, beautiful video... now if I could only figure out how to get it to play in a loop, she'd never leave the computer (cybercat).
Hy gtristdan, I was just watching this and didn't know you commented.
Sometimes the chickadees and nuthatches eat from my hand. The other birdies don't, though the t*tmouse has come close. The birdies must get to know the person 1st before they go up to them. A downy wood pecker likes the bird house I have, I heard him in it last night.
Oh so beautiful birds! I really enjoyed your video and would love to try feeding my birds with my hand and see if they'll come to me or not. I Love all kinds of animals, specially birds. Thank you for posting the video.

I have humming birds feed on my finger but I'm still trying to get the finch and chickadee's to feed on my hand. Great video!

wow i'd love to feed humming birds but there aren't too many up here
TdotSoul 3 years ago
I have a lot of birdfeeders also and a lot of chickadees come to feed. How long did it take for you to get them to feed out of your hand? They are the cutest little birds.
dawniemori 3 years ago
Hey Dawn, this pace was a conservation area and the chickadees had aready been "tamed" before I got there... the woodpecker was omething new though
TdotSoul 3 years ago

This comment has received too many negative votes show
it's a fake hand and a remote controlled camera!!
do you see the hand moving at all, even when lifting higher?
do you hear the camera persons breathing?
it's fake, but really well done, so therefore cool in my books!

At about 1:00-1:01 of your video a small animal with a fluffy tail walks by the back scenery on the far right... Interesting.
And YAY.. I love feeding chickadees out of my hand, I bet you nearly fainted when the Downy landed!!

I once fed chickadees on my hat by putting bird seed there- hehe.

Haha check out my new video, Feeding chickadees HD, I do the same thing

"Sparti" thanks you and I thank you.

haha I BET starti likes it ;) He'd love to take a pounce!

yeah, she chatters and gets excited.

This is some of the most awesome footage I've seen on YT.
Thanks tons for sharing... how on EARTH did you hold the cam... or was it docked onto a tripod? lol
Bflatblues55 3 years ago
Hey yw, I used a Panasonic camera, so the grip was pretty comfortable, making it relatively easy to hold still in my hand.

Thats great, I love it!
