Today's US dollar is not backed by or redeemable for anything, just like the Zimbabwe dollar - which is why hyperinflation is inevitable and gold and silver will gain in purchasing power significantly.

Eventually, the Zimbabwean currency was declared worthless in April 2009. While they had to pan only $3 worth of gold for a loaf of bread, they no longer had a steady source of income. Either they find gold or they die.

@UniverseOffspring You miss an important point. During the Great Depression, the US dollar was backed by gold and redeemable for silver. It's an apples to orange comparison, as during the deflation in the great depression, people who saved currency were actually saving gold an silver.
Today's US dollar is not backed by or redeemable for anything, just like the Zimbabwe dollar - which is why hyperinflation is inevitable and gold and silver will gain in purchasing power significantly.

@MyOwnYTAccount Interesting, from the book that I'm studying it says that the people who kept their jobs had the value of their money increase three fold; however, the money supply was low and could not keep up with the minimum wage- so many people got laid off since paying them less would be breaking the law even tho a third would be equivalent to %100 of the value. So I guess, it was valuable scarce money(gold) that not many could get to conduct business as opposed to worthless abundant notes.

@UniverseOffspring Because the dollar was tied to to gold, the US Federal Reserve could not, as they do today (as they did in Zimbabwe), inject liquidity into the market by creating more currency. In the Depression, consumers were too scare to spend their money, which is what caused the deflationary shortfall you describe. They were scared to spend their money after the stock market crashed and so consumers started hording money, causing the phenomenon you describe.

@Elmore3141 It is not the people's fault the currency was destroyed. Robert Mugabe hyperinflated the currency to pay off IMF debt. Then he printed much more money to try to solve more problems. Eventually, the Zimbabwean currency was declared worthless in April 2009. While they had to pan only $3 worth of gold for a loaf of bread, they no longer had a steady source of income. Either they find gold or they die.
