I haven't listened to Strummer since his Clash recordings. His voice must have changed considerably. He must have been close to 50 when he sang this. Incidentally, his voice sounds quite similar to RAS-1.

This is the best cover of this number - leave it to Joe Strummer to do a reggae standard justice and add a totally new flavor to it. And Tippa Irie's toasting/bacing vocals are a great touch.

It goes without saying that Jimmy Cliff would be proud. By the way, Joe and Jimmy do an amazing duet called "Over the Border". It was released on Jimmy Cliff's "Black Magic" album in 2004. Thought I'd mention that for everyone out there!
