agreed, hybrids are only reliable for 100k miles or so, then the whole system needs replacing.
which i suppose is ok for you if you only will keep it for a couple of years, but the resale of an old one will suck, and who would buy one second hand?
If it has the same hybrid system as used in the S400Hybrid, it will have a small 15Kw electric motor in the transmission housing and a Li-on battery under the bonnet in place of the lead acid 12v. A converter is used to drop the 144v to 12 for use by the accessaries. Standart regenerative braking etc. The problem is that cars get good open road economy but around town it drops like a stone, with stop start motoring, with a hybrid, urban fuel use is lifted to open road levels.
Both the Lexus and the Mercedes hybrids use nickel-metal hydride batteries
Why? Nihm batteries are old news! Why not use a lighter Lipo-polymer or LiFe battery? Thos batteries weigh significanlty less, are more effecient, and have less voltage drop under load!
Any lithium technology battery is also sensitive to abuse and larger packs have a larger chance of thermal runaway( AKA FIRES) NiM are vastly safer can be discharged from 100-0% and not become useless. Lithium technology batteries While lighter, smaller, and more powerful, require evtensive battery management systems external and internal safety devices and in a Warrented car manufacturer use will have their Available power range reduced. You will not use the top20% or bottom 40%
I am not sure what you mean by "thermal runaways", but Lipo batteries run much cooler than nihm.
All you need for a Lithim polymer battery is a balancing device (to equalize cell voltage) and an LVC (low voltage cut-off). But, you make good points, I guess the technology to produce them safely and cheaply at this large of a scale is not there yet.
Thermal run away would better be described as an Explosion =D Lipos hold alot of energy, and unfortunatly they are very sensitive to over charging, undercharged states, heat, impact, etc. These problems multiply when the battery is made physicaly bigger.
diesel, like everyone said is the way to go. It's alot cleaner than it used to be and it has more potential energy/KG than gasoline, making it run better.
I think it's time that America switches to Diesel. All this Hybrid mumbo jumbo is just too expensive and the improvements sometimes aren't that great. If it wasn't for the greedy lobbyists we would be much better off, like most European countries.
oh, a seat ibiza ecomotive can get a 74mpg. so screw that. if you lived in europe you would see that all diesel engines (no V12 or something like that) are around 50mpg. and by the way: dont you think a cr-v is a little different from a ML450?
Hype-reds sucks, my mom's rx450h doesn't get very good mileage. They just have them because electric cars are trendy. Get a diesel they are better and quicker.
@sdijnfpo0jaisf Its around because there is a market for non diesels with improved economy in the US. In Europe half of all cars sold are diesel, so they are getting hybrid diesels soon as they have embraced diesels unlike the US. Hybrids are a good idea when they are simple, take braking energy and add it back when accelerating.
what is the price of this ML? Does anybody know?

the diesel gets better mpg, costs less to buy, and will be better for the environment, so why would you buy this hybrid?

It also is much more reliable. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi makes some amazing and reliable diesels.

Untrue. Modern diesel engines are actually more complicated than a hybrid-petrol car.

stupid. they are going to jack up the price of that car by 10,000 when its fuel economy is the same as a zr1 on the highway.

Bigger battery= BIgger danger.
That makes sense!

you need to note that the euro test cycle for ecomony is different from the american test cycle.

gosh you can achieve that mpg flat out in an Accord!
If you wanna green hybrid car you might as well do it properly, get a tiny one not a hugh one.
Mini diesel can do 72mpg. etc.
Conclusion, hybrid=marketing and pointless.

get a diesel. much better. i have no idea why this hybrid crap is still around. it's expensive, not that good and more complex (electro-mechanically)
