  • It's not necessary to re-record a track that has already been recorded in 2006 on the same level.

Ritenour said something like he wanted to push Guthrie a little further by giving him Tal and Vinnie. For me it shows some kind of arrogance and disrespect to the original rythm section that did an amazing job on "erotic cakes".

  • @stratocat74 I dunno about you, but I listened to it to death so this is a good refresher. But I do agree with you

  • no offence, but the weak link in this song is Tal.......the bass on original track is much much better............but Vinnie is a monster for sure...........i want to see original lineup with Vinnie on drum

  • That ''guy'' that decided to do the album isn't just a guy, he's Lee Ritenour, great musician. :)

  • Sh!t just got real....

  • Jeez, could you guys lay off the uploader?!

  • not to descredit anyone involved in this track/project but the original Fives is definitely a lot better than this, in my opinion. (production, tones, structure)

The original track with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass would be perfect.

  • @EscapDAfate I do like the other version better but this new flavor simmers on my toungue

  • this is seriously like the greatest version of this song man my pants are wrecked!!!

  • youtube stars, are yoyu kidding me? guthrie govan, lee ritenour and tal wilkenfeld are beyond simple youtube stars

  • @jaqetall it's what the guy who did this project called em. Don't blame the messenger

  • @jaqetall and vinie caliuota

  • this is freakin insane!! \m/

  • This is really incredible! Guthrie, Tal, and Vinnie should make an album or two or three or four

  • I actually much prefer the production on this track to the original. Guthrie's is much more in your face, but this is much easier to listen to, less harsh, more pleasing, even with youtube's horrible compression making it clip all the time.

  • A project a guy decided to do...... wow.... showing his ignorance of top notch jazz fusion guitarists in a big way...lol

  • @TheRadiorad no one cares

  • Vinnie's part for the tap line is f**king awesome! Bass solo is incredible! I dig this version but still not as much as "live in the studio", even though it has some really great moments. Cool track thanks for the upload!

  • This is incredible, tasty and a 17 year old on bass!

  • @roblmri Try 24-year old.

  • dude guthrie and vinnie... its a dream come true

  • I liked the bass solo from the original recording better than this one :/

  • @RsanchezBc I like the original better in general. This version seems really empty sounding and thin, while Erotic Cakes covers everything and while complimenting Guthrie in every way. Not saying that this version is bad, Guthrie really pushes the envelope with this version. Even though Guthrie gets awesomer with every time he plays his own songs, I think this one is a bit sketchy (not on Guthrie's part).

  • Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. Yeah buddy!!!

  • that "guy" you're talking about is the fusion jazz giant Lee Ritenour...

This track has some good definition in the mix, but lacked balls... Lee was huge back in the 80's but he is getting old, I don't think he quite has an idea how to mix modern guitars. The sound engineering on the entire album sounded pretty sketchy too. However, Guthrie still pwns tho!

  • @mastersgta1 Thanks, I forgot his name.

  • @mastersgta1 i think the mix down is fine. if you would listen to it on some vintage equipment you would realize that. Guthrie has a lot to offer and real producers know how to make a composition work.

  • @rameus779255

If you would put the track on a spectrum analyzer you'll realize that the mix is very "scooped" out. The lack of mid range carves the "ribs" out of the track. It's very typical jazz treatment but it doesn't quite emphasize the "power" which separates Guthrie from most other fusion guys our there. It's like you can't use a Billy Talent setting to mix Count Basie. Same idea.

  • @mastersgta1 It's available in 5.1 and if you have a money system like mine, the entire DVD audio just blows you away. But this is probably the track I listen to the least. The Scofield and Martino tracks are much deeper and more nuanced, but Rit was trying to bring in a lot of styles, so I applaud him.

  • @BadSneakers

lol, If a snare sounds suffocated in 1.0 then no matter you have 5.1 or 100.1 it still sounds suffocated. Rit has a lot of finesse and taste, but not much in terms of... uh power.

  • @mastersgta1 Rit discussed w each musician (including Vinnie Colaiuta) about how they wanted to sound, be miked, etc. All were open to ideas - except Schon. Rit said he knows how he wants to sound and instructs the engineers accordingly. . Again, if your only experience is youtube, you're missing out on a audio masterpeice. I use the DVD all the time to show off my system. To seamlessly listen to Benson then to Govan is quite an audio feat. Bonamassa & Govans studio exchange is stuff of legend

  • @mastersgta1 PS, that's some good blowing on Night Rhythms!

  • @mastersgta1 first, this album sounds stunning..not on youtube but if u get the full uncompressed cd version the whole album is mixed really really well, second lee doesnt do most of the mixing, he hires a pro who knows how to get a great sound which is "modern" or atleast what makes sense in tthe tune

  • @paisteguy799

Lee is a producer. His job is to give creative input as to what he wants the tracks to sound like and his engineers will try their best to get the sound HE wants. Producer steers the ship, not the "hired pros".

As for the whole album, I've heard all the tracks. The album sounds stunning in its own right, lets put it that way...

  • @mastersgta1 I have the DVD audio version of this and if your balls aren't rattling when it plays you have none.

  • @BadSneakers

that just means either your balls are too light or you have too much bass...

I'm not disqualifying Lee for being everything that he is. I love a lot of Lee's work myself. I've mixed tons and tons of guitars and this to my ear lacks the body. It's very clean, but that comes at a price.

  • @mastersgta1 Care to share any of these mixes? I went to your youtube account and you'd need a 5 gallon jar of anal bleach to get the shit off your noddling saxophone uploads. I really hate youtube pissn contests, but you are just dead wrong on this issue.

  • @BadSneakers

    dl.dropbox.com/u/39905988/Denouement_full.mp3

Okay, then. Now show me one of yours. "Professor"!

  • @mastersgta1 Fives is insanely more powerful and complex but I don't like the kind of music you linked. But it's good for that kind of music. I'm not a snob. Again, if you were to hear Fives in DVD audio, it would blow you away - light balls or too much base or not. In fact, Ritenour got input from everyone throughout the entire process. At one point Scofield thought his guitar was too low and asked Rit how he got his "tone"; and Neal Schon laid down specifically how he was to be mixed. Cheers

  • @BadSneakers

I can sample a Steinway and play it through my monitoring system and it sounds stunning... but you can't do that with something that people is going to be listening with their ipods and tiny ear phones all day right? I'm sure Lee has been taking advices from everyone, but it doesn't change the fact that Guthrie's HUGE HUGE presence is poorly wrapped with an organ... Nothing wrong with that, except 80% of people can't hear anything but a guitar, drums and "something" in between...

  • @mastersgta1 Very true, I seriously doubt it was mixed for an Ipod. dude, youve been making your case via youtube and Ipod?? Many lament that mixing nowadays has lost its vitality because it's mixed for hearphones. I just 5.1'd Fives to make sure I was right, and I am. It's explosive, yet the solo guitar peice by Benson is also what is should be: subtle, comfy, and as if a fire and glass of Merlot awaits. Cheers

  • @BadSneakers

Not everyone can afford vitality. There has to be a balance. Acquire something means giving something else away. Cheers.

  • @mastersgta1 I'm the consumer, not the distributer. But I'm glad qaulity sound still matters and is available. . Sorry you can only Ipod it. :(

  • @BadSneakers

lol, I can't afford to just take care of the people with 5.1s. And chances are, if it sounds good on an ipod, it WILL SOUND BETTER on a system that cost ten thousand dollars. K, I gotta eat supper. Later.

  • @mastersgta1 No, loading an Ipod into a high end system my sound better than the Ipod experience, but not compared to something that has been produced specifically for a CD or DVD audio. I'm sure it will sound just as good or better someday, however.

  • @BadSneakers

btw, I put the track on my monitors... they sound great! So does a lot of other things...

No try to be a dick... Just explaining where I am coming from. That's all.

  • @paisteguy799

Oh btw... I really want to know what was he thinking wrapping that guitar with the organ... asking him when he is not busy would ya? Thx! ;)
