  • That is a fantastic exoskeleton. I would like to know how much a commercial model would cost? I would really like to distribute it in Turkey if it's affordable for the masses.

  • @rehnai Hi there, Rex is currently only available to customers based in New Zealand where they will be close to our Rex Centre and service team. We expect to launch Rex in more locations from the end of 2011 where the price will be US$150,000. Regards, Thomas at Rex Bionics

  • @rexbionics Thank you for the fast reply Thomas. Many disabled people here can't afford wheelchairs and with a price of $150.000 we will be able to provide thousands of people a means to be mobile again, so I don't think it will be a wise choice for now, but in the future I'm sure it will be affordable for everyone (This is a fairly new product and you are surely researching for a more cost effective developpement precesses). I will be looking forward to hear more about your accomplishments.

  • Lame. Until the bionic legs move jut as fast as normal humans legs, controlled by your own thoughts, it's pretty pathetic. It even needs an external power source. I consider this a downgrade rather than an upgrade.

  • @PeopleSquasher Did you listen to any of the benefits he speaks of? Increased mobility in his joints, increased circulation and thus faster healing of bruises and sores, better bladder function and control, ability to be independent at work, and improved employability, the ability to do different jobs at work... Why would you listen to everything an actual user is saying about how it improves his life and then say it's a pathetic downgrade? Just getting a man that size standing helps health.

  • @artistcolor

Indeed, why would I listen to such irrelevant bullshit? This product is not affordable for normal people. Only millionaires can get their hands on one. So I would kind of think you're making fun of disabled people, since it's out of their reach, in which case I think you're a cool guy because cripples ought to be made fun of. Besides, millionaires would much rather want a truly advanced exoskeleton like I described above.

  • @PeopleSquasher Who are you? Irrelevant bullshit? It is in the beginning stages, there are only a few being used... this is like when cars, or computers, or you name it that is technology, began. "Why should I give a damn that a few millionaires can ride around on their loud expensive horseless carriages? "... Everything starts this way, with the price when they are custom made few trying to make up for the years of research and development being super high. Funny how we all have cars now.

  • @artistcolor

Which brings us back to my original comment. Until it's improved and affordable, it's not that great, because it's still a premium piece of equipment sold for a premium price. I have a very good point, so it really doesn't matter who I am, because a valid point is a valid point. Would I suddenly be wrong if I were a guy who beats up cripples for his amusement? No, I wouldn't, no matter how much you hated it.

  • @PeopleSquasher No, you are wrong, no matter who and what you are. It is neither pathetic, a downgrade, lame or any of the other things you have stated. No matter if you are a guy who beats up cripples for amusement, or an intelligent capable parapalegic, you are wrong.

  • @artistcolor

    Prove it.

  • I dont get why we as humans spend trillions of dollars in warfare to kill others when all that can be used to help people with disability and diseases

  • God bless you and give you the wisdom and the funds to improve the condition of millons of people around the world. People should pass a bill to fund your company! and your projects!

  • v good

  • i think this is amazing, but how about one for quads? and wouldn't it be cool if we could get it funded by the govt disability programme? ooh yeah, to see my husband standing up again would be AWESOME!

  • wow you inspired me thanks so much care for others love your work prefect idol mr happy

thank you very much for sharing your veiws

  • good luck making it even better

  • @gravexx Thanks! After 7 years developing Rex in secret, we're really pleased to begin talking to people about what Rex can enable people to do, and we're excited by the opportunities ahead. Thomas at Rex Bionics.

  • Hayden! Alright! Thanks for your marvelous invention!

  • small price. I think good design is about making things affordable for every person too. I don't see how any material used here is worth more than car. I understand the time and ingenuity to make this work is worth a price and cost but you would make your money back much quicker if you made this unit cheaper so that you can sell more units. Aside from the fact that ripping off the incapacitated is no joke. Good luck selling this thing in any country that is ran with private insurance.

  • @freddyoner batteries are expensive, servos and motors are expensive. This is very different tech than a car, so comparing them isn't quite fair.

  • Hold the left arrow key on your keyboard to play Snake:)

  • "grease monkey" ... lol

  • We'll be watching this video in 10-20 years and be just amazed as we are when we watch the videos of the first Apple today.

  • i hope nothing turns out bad with this because it looks like a great peice of technology that would help people in so many ways :D yay for tech!!

  • Why does it walk so slow, the wheel chair looks faster

  • @digitallysick understand that this tech is a breakthrough for whats to come in the future. plus -if you do walk- it's hard to understand how it feels to finally be able to walk, let alone stand; wither be you were unable to walk from birth or from an accident.

  • go kiwi's go

  • Bet his girlfriend bitches at him to use it on the weekends. On a serious note, this is a great piece of tech, I know Reeves before he passed was starting to come around by doing shit like this. Im sure it strengthens the muscle even slightly, and readies him for if he ever recovers.

  • i want robot legs, 15yrs in chairs

  • @snalesnot

dude you are in chairs you should feel proud because you don't have to deal with my fucking arthritis...

  • schweet!!

  • those aren't robotic legs! They're just swamp gas...or Venus

  • That is awesome. Looks like it made his life alot better. It takes a very strong individual to live a life like that. Big props to him.

  • Comment removed

  • they could have just lowered the workbenches... might have been cheaper

  • some piece of nice work ö

  • cyborg? >.>

  • @nuke1989

    technically not a cyborg.

cyborg means computerized prosthetic that's embeded, ie non-removable.

  • It'll suck if someone pushed him.

  • @bukakemember lolll

  • Whatever he is saying, its hardly understandable.

  • so when comes the rex turbo ?

    for normal walking speed

  • this is really inspirational.....though there strings attached like very high cost, very slow movements, very less battery life... still its a commendable effort by these people....waiting for a day when all spinal cord injury patients could not only walk but can run with out any kind of external support ......if faith can move mountains then why cant paralyzed muscles....

  • @kashyaphhml but the way that science evolves and how our God givin brains begin to understand things better, we will have no problem in fixing the problems in such tech and make it better. i.e: from drum sounds to cell-phones

  • this thing pretty soon is gooing to be like just a pants you put on, and allows you to run, jump and all that good stuff

  • I have noticed that medical science and any other science that helps humans in any positive way is slow. I mean, compared to medical science, electronic technology such as tv's, game consoles, and any other entertainment technology advances really fast. For example, first LCD tvs, then LED, and now 3D? Let's invest money and concentrate on stuff that ACTUALLY matters such as: Green tech, Medical tech, space tech, etc.....

  • @Lexman00 start by making this faster for the poor bastard

  • @Lexman00 Medical Science is important but Better TV's, Radios, Cellphones, ext do help progress humanity and save lives in there own way. I do agree that Medical research is neglected compared to the rest.

  • @Lexman00 What you have said is 100% true. The reason for that is that things like consumer electronics are profitable, and they take those profits and invest in improving that technology. Scientific research isn't profitable (at least not immediately) and most funding for green tech, medical tech, space tech comes from the government. It's unfortunate that that is the case but it is.

  • @Lexman00 LED is green tech and things like bionic legs are obviously a lot more difficult to make than TVs... interacting with neurons is a not a simple task.

  • @Lexman00 All of that cost too much. Plus not many even care for it. Unless you have money to wipe your ass with, solar panels, mechanical limbs, and even the fucking hospital bills are costly.

  • @Lexman00 i hear you, but human beings only concentrate on what they want not what they need. we always follow what seams appealing to us and gives us something to tune out from the real world -which is awful to us- and go for the things that make us either great and powerful (nukes, weapons, businesses, how to make a better gulf club, how to improve ones batting swing, etc), and entertained to again "tune out" (television, celebrity gossip, fast food, etc) instead of trying to fix problems.

  • @Lexman00 unfortunately the most research goes into sectors that are funded the most -- i.e. sectors which will see easy returns. however, since green technology is getter exponentially cheaper, this technology is going to BOOOOOM in the next 10 years you wait! and same w/ medical technology (at least for the elderly) b/c all of the baby boomers are getting old. space technology has been putting billions of dollars into projects every year up until obama changed things a little bit ago...

  • @Lexman00 also, if this who health care thing that obama is doing is going to actually make stuff cheaper for us than this will help boom all kinds of medical tech

  • Hahaha, how exactly does space tech matter in this century?

  • @Lexman00 I tell you why this is the way it is. Because medical technology focuses too much on getting their research money back with the first units sold, its a thing of patents expiration business. In other words, the aren't really smart at making more units for lower price. read around and you'll see that this guys are trying to sell this REX units for over $110,000 USD. I am sorry but that is ridiculous price for something that really doesn't move fast enough to replace the wheelchair. I

  • @Lexman00 I wouldn't completely disagree, but a lot of the technology that builds these new TVs is based off prior advancements in green/med/space tech. And LCD and then LED LCD tvs both are better visually, but also greener than their older versions. 3D not so much but it comes from med science based on how the eyes work.

Part of the problem is med sci gadgets require much more testing to ever be available, and are way expensive.

  • @Lexman00 It's funny you mention tv and game consoles... cause those arefar behind and purposely slowed down by the industry. it only advances when it absolutely has to. The field of exoskeletons for patiens is very recent. There are now many ventures around, many more to come :) . the new thing is alos feeling with your exoskeleton as if with your skin (great for paralyzed people)

  • METAL GEAR REX?!

  • The fact that they never showed him walking faster than a snail's pace leads me to believe this thing is slow as shit.

  • hey u guys wanna learn how 2 hack facebook accs? check out this vid: /watch?v=FDO3Z-Sixh8

  • Why are people bitching about a device that give people the ability to walk when they couldn't. It is still a prototype made by LOCKHEED.

  • what a dumbass, why wont he just walk? that thing is slow

  • @jimisajewboy

Maybe he cant walk you dumbass..

  • @jimisajewboy

Too much idiocracy in this statement.

  • @jimisajewboy ur the dumbass watch it again.. he used to be in a wheelchair! that why he is using this.

  • what happens when he gets knocked off balance and falls?

it looks very unbalanced just watching him walk

  • Very interesting. Anything that gives people hope, is to be encouraged. Good luck to the fella getting used to these.

  • Wouldn't it be a lot easier to instead legs (with feet) that seem to be extremely slow you give him some kind of segway?

  • @Axol I noticed one of the displays had stair climb on the controller. That would be very difficult with wheels. Also, when you aren't moving with the feet, there is very little battery being used, with segway style, there would be constant battery use to keep upright. But yes, I've seen one with a segway adapted for a parapalegic. It was great for the guy at the amusement park.

  • @Coecoo Japan also eats whales

  • METAL GEAR

  • Comment removed

  • 3:00 the rex can even help you make chef boiardi!

  • Wtf is that bulky piece of shit? Japan already got that tech with 95% less mass and without remotes.

  • @Coecoo How much do you think that thing cost? What did it react to? Probably the small movements someone could make who had some reaction in their legs. How long did the batteries last?

  • @Liv2xplore You think bigger size means cheaper material and longer battery length? There's something called technology and it makes things smaller, lighter and cheaper. It had a 36+ hour battery and it gets improved at a monthly basis.

  • @Coecoo Actually, I saw another vid where they said it was $150,000. So I'm starting to lean more in your thinking. But, from the point of view of someone that lives with a parapalegic, it's great that people are working on these things. There's just no way for the average person to be able to afford any of the things that have been produced so far. Insurance probably won't cover any of these until they cost less than a powerchair.

  • I remember Japanese made a one that would react to impulses in brain so it moved the way your brain wanted it to move.

  • That is awesome, I bet it cost an arm and a leg.

  • Interesting! It's good to see technology like this. I doubt this is perfected - Even in the ad, the rex thing looked pretty slow/clumsy. But it did allow him to stand and move.

  • nice to see kiwis finaly inventing something that the whole world can say "wow" to (after L@P that is)

  • 1:28 Walk / Turn.... screw that SHUFFLE melbourne style xD

  • eyyyyyyyyy McFly Hover boards dont work on waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaater

    you neeed powwwaaaa

  • House + fire + Rex legs

    = Youre funked.

    House + Fire

    Rex legs - Battery

= ... Id rather shoot myself.

  • Maybe if you spent less money on your fancy intro and marketing team and more on your fucking legs they wouldn't be so slow and terrible, shitheads

  • @UltraBibendum slow and terrible? Try saying this when you have lost your ability to walk and you will be so bloody grateful that you are able to move so 'slow and terribly'.

  • just me or is the rex so fucking so?No doubt it is cool and a huge advancement in tech, but just seems so slow.

  • Same as the other guy, try saying this when you have lost your ability to walk and you will be so bloody grateful that you are able to move so 'slowly'.

  • LOL it would suck it the battery just suddenly died and you'd be stuck there for a day before someone gets back...

  • All I've ever cared about was video games and they made me a millionaire. So maybe I don't know what the Civil War was, or who invented the helicopter even though I own one, but I did beat The Legend of Zelda before I could walk. I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

  • @ganjamigo i love you for quoting JP.

  • @ganjamigo Silly rick troll, vending machines don't take $100 bills

  • 1st one?, Seach wikipedia for Hal_5, its a better version and the user can walk without the hand controller

  • lol his wife is still in a wheelchair xD

  • Comment removed

  • Kind of slow. But I bet that you could get these things up to speed in no time. Look at the bionic robots they have today that can walk as fast as a normal human being.

  • @sk8tertater bionic robots

    GTFO

  • It seems the biological benefits are just as good as the psychological benefits, his bladder function and circulation improved a lot once he was upright. Every country's medical program should have these, with time I'm sure they would become slimmer and more advanced in operation.

  • If you can afford one of these you sure as shit can afford an oil change.

  • This is one small step for a paralyzed man, one giant leap for paralyzed mankind.

  • good on him and well done to the creator

  • Ya know, go you.

  • wow this is awesome for those stuck in a wheelchair for most of their lives, a pity about the price tag but maybe the government can pull their finger out and subsidise these.

  • great win to everyone workers and employers.

  • can it be fitted with powered wheels (skates) to enable REX to function as a vertical wheelchair as well? Keep the joint movement etc but enhance the mobility with a wheeled option. I would have the wheels function as the fore-foot and heel permanently deployed, just power them when required.

    Great work guys!

  • awesome! needs more jetpack!
