John, this is a common mis-understanding. Solar power, even if costs drop dramatically (a big "if") and intermittency issues are resolved (a gigantic "if"), solar is not a feedstock material for nearly every product as oil is. More importantly, solar does nothing for the most important need in the modern world--transportation. Our problem isn't electricity. The biggest challenge ever faced by humanity is producing enough liquid fuel for transportation to meet soaring demand.
The solution to our energy problems rises every day. Go solar. Yes, it's expensive up front to implement, but it's less expensive in the long term and does not emit greenhouse gases like CO2 and nitrous oxide.
I have little time for people like piporeiser. He's throwing stink bombs at a film he hasn't seen. He presumes it's about the oil industry, when it's about all of us and the realities of our relationship to oil. This is the blinding ignorance, arrogance and thoughtlessness we are battling with spOILed. We need an adult conversation about oil and transportation, not immature and uninformed critics posting their profound thoughts for the rest of us to admire.
I don't believe that renewables will entirely fill the gap left by oil. So how about, instead of making a documentary that directly speaks for the interests of the oil industry, you make one on how to learn how to live with less energy?
For a counterpoint, search the 2009 documentary "Collapse" (it's on YouTube).
I haven't seen this film, but I have a feeling that it fails to see the bigger picture (climate change, yes it is real) and the inevitable (and yes, inconvenient) truth that oil will run out eventually.
We need to get rid of oxygen. What a terrible addiction! I'm disappointed to hear you worked on that atrocious film Expelled, but this looks interesting.
One of the goals of spOILed is to correct the language about oil that has been corrupted. Oil companies do not receive "subsidies". They receive deductions on equipment that all businesses receive. They also receive "depletion allowances" which is a reduction in tax that keeps marginal wells producing. If the tax were not reduced the well would be plugged. I am curious to know what other "energy" replacement eddiepotato imagines. The world needs this energy. Please stop keeping it a secret!
@spOILedTheMovie Did you realize that there is another faction in this argument? It is not simply a matter of do you or do you not support domestic drilling. The argument that we should completely stop using oil is impossible. Does that mean that we should turn the oil companies loose to drill anywhere and anyway they want. For example, should they be able to drill fifty feet from your house and use all our water up. Is there a line?
No doubt on the damage much higher gas prices will cause. If a sudden and prolonged supply disruption happens the social fabric of this nation is likely to quickly unravel. It's something that concerns me every day, and many of our "leaders" are standing in the way of rational, reasonable oil policy.
At $15/gallon for motor fuel, I don't think many of us will be going to our jobs anymore. I think civil war starts at about $12/gallon. When the poor cannot get to work, you will have chaos.
@reaper0221 The UK hasn't any guns, plus the price of petrol was always higher in the UK for years.. UK threshold might be $20/gallon where people get violent. Look at Greece. Heck, I remember during the Embargo in the early 70s, people fighting eachother over a gallon of gas because of the rationing.
There is a BIG difference between "addicted" and "spOILed". Addictions ruin your life. Being spOILed is when something or someone makes your life better and yet you take this betterment for granted or even attack the thing/people that's improving your life. Is oil "destroying" your life? If you think the answer is yes, visit any 3rd world country.
@spOILedTheMovie We can get energy without needing oil if we used the same subsidies oil companies get and put them into safer, less invasive energy harvesting. Nice to see what how the other side views things in an unabashed manner though.
After reading the comments, I would suggest that you watch the counter video call "World without Oil". Their solution is algae methanol replacement for oil/gas. Then watch another video called “World without Water". Then, you decide.
Disappointing. 95% of our transportation is fueled by oil, that will not change anytime soon. Conventional oil remains the highest return on energy investment, powering our economy and our modern luxuries. There is definitely a film to be made here - but opening up the U.S. coastlines to drilling would only have a negligible impact on world oil prices, our foreign oil dependency or our options going forward in what is a carbon constrained world.
Yes! You just made my weekend, CoffeBoy! Was beginning to think the Green movement was asleep on this one. Now I can dream about actually having a debate with someone on how to run even 5% of our transportation system on something other than fuel made from oil. What fun!
Self interest? Absolutely!! I have a burning interest in waking the people of this country up to widespread disinformation that is going to affect the rest of their lives in a very serious way. I have a family and friends and a nation that I love. That's my interest! Just out of curiosity I would want to see one of these mythical documentaries where the filmmaker has no self interest. Pretty unwatchable, I'm sure, just like all those docs that feign some self-decieved moral high ground.
This looks like a very important film... my take on why we're not drilling here is because we are preparing for a time when all the other sources in the world are tapped and America will be in a position to then drill and charge a super premium price for oil. Plain and simple.

@basspig I paid just about $12 per gallon while living in the UK and I do not recall seeing any civil war.

Spoiled but not addicted? What's the difference? Both equates with dependence. Looks like an interesting film though.

Someone needs to let Glenn Beck know about this video. If you have access to someone over at GBTV, let them know.
