The West Wing commentary on William Fichtner

This episode was one of the shining moments of this show. William Fichtner was beyond fantastic here. You want to hate this guy, but you also have to admit that he's brilliant and even though you want to spend your whole life disagreeing with everything that he says, at the same time you really like him. It's hard to hate someone when you feel that it's an honor to even speak to him.

This is from the "commentary" track of the DVD. We're hearing from the writers and director of this particular episode. On The West Wing season 1-6 DVD's they'd add commentaries on a few episodes from directors, producers, writers and actors on an audio subchannel. Aaron Sorkin participated on the commentaries for seasons 1-4, even though he was gone from the show by the time the DVD's came out.

Lang and Mulready made me want to cry at various points through this episode. I love both of them. And the way they looked when they realized they were both actually going to be on the Supreme Court, that they weren't just called to the White House as a matter of publicity, was just wonderful. Fichtner and Close are both amazing, and the characters were very well written.

I love the idea behind this plotline, showing that two intelligent people can argue opposite sides of an issue, with respect, and have the end result be even greater than the sum of their points. (You know, like the opposite of what you typically see in YouTube comments.)
