If you don't watch out USA you'll end up like us in the UK. We once had the most powerful industrial base on the planet...it's almost completely gone now. My home town has lost pretty much all it's factories and now we're filled to the brim with shops and flats that nobody wants. Just a warning.
Hope all the Rush Limbaugh lovers are happy now. Good jobs are gone that also put alot of other people's kids to work bagging groceries and the like and supported the schools with alot of revenue. Gotta be a fool to trash the assembly workers in this country.
Dear former Moraine Plant Employees, thank you for your years of hard work. I was just in a bad accident a few hours ago in my 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer and i couldn't help but think of the documentary "The Last Truck" My Trailblazer truly saved my life, thank you for your quality construction. Though I usually by new cars, after this (mine's totaled) I will be going out to buy a used Trailblazer, I wish I could still get a new one, I have owned four of these vehicles and have loved them all
I never understood why GM workers made over $40 dollars an hour and fast food workers just $9. To assemble a car or a burger or taco is about the same to most workers. If taco bell pays 9 GM workers who just press buttons or turn a screw should make 15 that's fair.
To add, working on an vehicle assembly line isn't exactly a low skill job, so the comparison by Jimbob162 isn't fair. The skill sets are specialized and are developed through training and experience.
Whereas anyone could flip a burger, there are definite technical capabilities you must be able to have, including spotting and fixing problems on the line as they occur.
There are also strenuous physical demands that do not exist in the work environment of a fast food restaurant.
While I'm not totally for unions, I'm also not totally against; the reason for their existence was to prevent the employer from abusing labor. I feel the UAW has gotten to be a tad too powerful for their own good, but that can be fixed to get a balanced relationship between labor and employer.
IMO, $9 an hour is an insult considering the jobs and what you must know and do in order to work. Working fast food is a breeze compared to this, but the work in a plant may be more satisfying in the end.
@Jimbobo162 to much fox news minus the benefits buddy. Corporations like to add in the benefits. According to my company i make 53 dollars an hour i make slightly under 20. So information dissemination is crucial in shaping a real view point on the american worker.
what do you know.... nothing appartently. If you only knew what the people at gm have gone through in the past 5 years you wouldn t have that kind of attitude. The are some of the very best people i know, hard working, dedicated. before you run your mouth maybe you should make sure you know what your talkin about first
To everyone at Moraine: Thank you ALL so much for your hard work and dedication. My '03 Envoy truly is one of the best cars we've ever owned. I'm so sorry about the plant closure, and I wish all of you the best of luck in finding new jobs. I know what you're all going through as my dad was employed at Norwood when they were shut down.
Again, best of luck, and thank you for making the best midsize SUVs in the world!
that's so sad...i was almost in tears watchin it...hope all yall find good jobs to replace the hard work yall put into this one!!!! peace be with all yall!!
good times, good place, mostly good people! Not going to miss the crappy work, management, or sorry union, but I will sure miss a lot of the great people, some of which I worked side by side with, some of which helped me make it through every day, a lot of whom I consider a family...best of luck to all of you! Mike Norton
I would like to state that everyone in the Moraine plant deserves every penny they earn. I worked there as a temp this past July and let me just say that they work their ass off. The line is none stop. And if you think you can compare a office job to theirs you have lost your mind. These people deserve their pay and I personally feel they werent paid enough. Think about it, they built a truck you put your family memebers in would you want them only making min. wage and not care about their job
This was a great video! I know a lot of the faces in it. I miss my job & the people I worked with more than I ever thought I would. To those of you that said all we did was sit on our ass...WAKE UP! We worked very hard for our pay & benefits.
As another employee from Moraine who opted to leave in July, this video is awesome! I spent fourteen years here and we won many awards for production and safety and these people are absolutely the best! My years spent built many long friendships and I will never forget my GM family. God Bless you and your families.
As a past Moraine management weenie, I can contest to the work ethic and performance of the employees of Moraine, they are a dedicated group who have earned respect from the automotive community. In the past 6 years, they have won Car and Driver Truck of the year and multiple accolades in the Harbour Report, which measures productivity. The union worker didn't kill the plant, GM's product mix coupled with a land locked location and a non-UAW workforce doomed the plant. Wake up, 1969vet...
Union workers have no one to blame for shut-downs and sending jobs offshore but themselves. You cannot demand the excessive wages and benefits they demanded and sit on your ass all day. You can't complain and ask for your union rep when the boss asks you to do what you're being overpaid to do. As you can see, it ain't gonna work. Now, neither are they. You reap what ye sow.
People like you don't know what they are talking about. You probably wouln't liek 5 minutes working in a plant like Moraine Assembly. We've seen your type before. Couldn't handle the work. Alway whinning and crying, running to medical department. Why shouldn't the American worker earn a decent wage and get decent insurance? They are NOT the reason why these companies are closing.
I agree with grumbles56. 1969vet, you have know idea what it is like to work at Moraine assembly. It was hard work. We had other union members transfer in, and hated it. It was because we were not UAW that we got closed. We did what we where told by our bosses. I talked to a boss, that got transferred to another plant, and he told me that he had it made at Moraine, compared to his new plant. The people are great at Moraine
You should realy know your history of what a union worker has accomplished ,I am one of those who work at moraine been there for 20 years and did not sit on my ass .I work from bell to bell and elbow to elbow. So what do you do for a living you sat to write your statement but you have no concept as to why we r shutting down so listen up dirt bag the world revolves around economic drive,if us 30 dollar an hour asssholes r out of a job then u 7 dollar an hour dirt bags will feel the economic effect
I can tell you what a union worker has accomplished. He's accomplished himself right out of a job. You being out of a job does not affect me at all. I'm still working in a non-union business thank you very much. I know the history quite well. My wife started there back in the old Fridgedaire days, then to White Consolidated when Fridge closed down, then recalled to the truck plant. I've heard all the stories bud and I'm not shedding a tear.
1969vet your company`s next see u in the soup line From your description your wife has been there for at least 20 plus years does that make her a lazy ass too? Your wife was making those wages did u ask her to take a paycut?
Great job on the movie. The men and women of Moraine Assembly were outstanding to work with and put out a product that could beat anything else in the segment. My heart goes out to all who are being affected by the closing, what a Christmas present... I am sorry to see the place close due to the hardship it will place on my past co-workers and friends. You guys rocked, I wish you luck with your futures!

4500 + great jobs gone from the Dayton area...
billions in productive output.. I'm sure Japan will be happy to have the jobs.
So go buy a Toyota .. who cares if Americans have jobs right? We can all sell each other insurance and haircuts while our trade debt buries us
