For me, I couldn't understand why nobody caught on that you really didn't need to say the "jokull" part of the name. As the locals explained many times (an example can be heard in this very video), jokull means glacier. That means that the name "Eyjafjallajökull" is actually the name of the glacier sitting on top of the volcano. The volcano itself is just "Eyjafjall".
Really? Eya-fjattla-jökutl. Or for you americans: Ey-yah-fyattla-jou-kuttl. ''E15'' is just pure lazyness and ignorance. We wont charge you for pronouncing it perfectly but..E15?.. Just.. STUPID.
@NGC3370JT E15=military speak. Imagine that whole word attempting to be said over the radio nonstop with all our jacked up pronunciation...it was a pain-saving measure :) In English, J's and K's rarely fall in the middle of a word, and if they do they always take on the same pronunciation. add in that funny accent mark over the O, and we're done for! But it sure sounds amazing when you all say it!!
@lecrapauddejerri9 most of us know we aren't the 'world.' But in a country as large as ours, most of us do well to even know a little about a lot of places within our own borders, let alone the rest of the globe.
@gorillaz23456 most of them are used in everyday English. 'Au', 'll' and 'j' are the only execptions but anyone with common sense would know instantly that 'j' is pronounced 'y' in every other germanic language except English. It's ignorance.
@lecrapauddejerri9 wow like every language on the planet has germanic origins would someone from asia or africa know how to say i dont think so.......
@gorillaz23456 what are you on about man? it doesn;t matter which letter is used, we still use the same pronounciations in this case. and no, obviously, because English is germaic that;s why it fits
@ste1nunn ee-dee-oh-sin-kra-teek kuhn-joo-kay-shun. I just realized- does Icelandic have a J sound? I mean written, your J is a Y, but speaking, is there a j? Also the reason why the volcano is hard is because we have nothing like the "fjalla" or the "kull" part in our language. it's not really an L or a T, you guys kind of blended it..
there is a J sound in icelandic like in Jón (John in english) and some outher words. And we have awesome tounges so were the only ones in the universe that can say it perfectly :P
mér fynst þetta ekkert smá fyndið að sjá þetta fólk að reyna að segja þetta orð þegar þetta er svo auðvelt að segja það er bara "l" sem fólk fynst erfitt að segja
i cant pronounce a few words in american or British language - but eyjafjallajökull ain't that hard to pronounce.....it's but NOT unspeakable just practice XD

@TheIcelandery Oh oh, lemme try! Hee-star-etar-mala-flutneengs-mathur. Yeah. so what;s it mean? google translate came up with "Supreme Court issues mover"
@TheIcelandery WOW, good gosh, that does look like a tough word you had said. WOW !!!! I'm impressed with how many folks can pronounce long names like that. Example: The TRUE name of Thailand which I didn't know Thailand was a shortened name from it's longer counterpart I am NOT even going to try to spell, hahaha !!!!
It's not HARD!! Just make a little effort. I'm not Icelandic but: eejafjatlajökutl. Eyjafjallajökull. See? Give it five or six tries. I'm amazed about all these unpronouncable, unspeakable glacier nmae vids.
icelandic is one of the most difficult languages to pronounce so you don't have to be embarrassed if you can't pronounce eyjafjallajökull - plus, you are just giving us here in iceland something to laugh about :)
I could get it right on my second try.....?
