It is totally not uncommon for there to be placeholding vocals in the demo version of a song and background vocals are usually in place before the actual singer somes and puts their lead vocals into the track.
This video is very misleading because it doesn't spotlight any of the verses, it just shows the chorus which has many backing vocals and makes it hard to discern the lead vocal.
Listen to the full version with verses and you can see they are TOTALLY different.

I can obviously hear Britney's voice in that. The differences aren't that obvious because they didn't remove Cathy's voice, they just added Britney's on top of it. But Britney definitely sung those parts.

Why is this a big deal? And how convenient that you left out the verses which are 100% Britney. Britney is more than a capable singer. Sometimes it just sounds better with a mix of different singers. (Harmonies especially) This isn't unique to Britney. Listen to Slave 4 U for an example where Britney does all of the vocals.
I've said this ever since it came out. Having been a fan of Cathy's in the early 90's I could hear that it was mainly her, with Britney more obviously on the verses and low in the mix everywhere else.

Cathy is the writer of the song and a singer in her own right.
She also wrote most of S Club 7's songs.
The fact is this record would sell more with Britney as the face of it so that's why I reckon she was used.

I can obviously hear Britney's voice in that. The differences aren't that obvious because they didn't remove Cathy's voice, they just added Britney's on top of it. But Britney definitely sung those parts.

Why is this a big deal? And how convenient that you left out the verses which are 100% Britney. Britney is more than a capable singer. Sometimes it just sounds better with a mix of different singers. (Harmonies especially) This isn't unique to Britney. Listen to Slave 4 U for an example where Britney does all of the vocals.

I've said this ever since it came out. Having been a fan of Cathy's in the early 90's I could hear that it was mainly her, with Britney more obviously on the verses and low in the mix everywhere else.
It's not exactly ghosting as you can hear Britney, and I doubt if Ms Dennis is too upset, given the song's extraordinary success.

you should play the first and middle parts of the song and compare. that are the parts where is no back-up vocals and you can clearly hear Britney Spears final version, or Chaty Dennis demo version.
for example play this part: "baby can't you see, i'm callin', a guy like you, should wear a warning..."
and you would so hear britney voice.

when they record, the backing singers will often immitate britneys voice, we all know britney isnt the best of singers and wouldnt be able to do all her backing vocals herself
for example you can clearly hear in the chorus of oops i did it again that the over-multi tracked backing vocals and harmonies are not britney
so they have simply done the same with this song, no doubt Cathy Dennis wrote and preproduced this song with a guide track vocal,

This is a pretty darn good pop song, and the main point here should be that Cathy Dennis is a great writer. Hopefully Britney and the rest of us are glad she wrote this! She is also singing the final version, but Britney's organization has the PR and marketing muscle to make it famous. Luckily, Britney was able to realize that Cathy's vocals where perfect as is, and she didn't re-sing it.

wow, your comparison of both songs speak for itselfs...on the background singing, we can hear cathy's voice, and the lead sing, when Cathy and Britney sings the principal part of the song, you can hear the difference...so Cathy was creditted as a background vocalist 'cause she did it. And Britney interpreted Cathy's Song, and obviously earn a lot of money with this..rsrs Cathy is a songwriter...and Britney is an interpreter.

Britney without doubt sings the main vocals. Cathy is credited and acknowledged for her role as a back ground vocalist. This appears to be the correct procedure for most artists and most artists have vocalists on all their records to back them up vocally. People try and fabricate stories out of nothing!!

The simple answer is: Britney is the main vocalist, and Cathy's vocals remain (and are even mixed with Britney's) to help fill out the sound. The banshee scream and the line after it is probably still Cathy though.
