  • I'll be working on this for my weekend now. There's no way I can watch this and not try it.

  • I have been a blues and jazz musician for 25-years and I still get a lot from your videos. I have to keep up with the playing techniques, since some of these kids are getting too damn good lately!

  • That's sick! I love your tone! You're danish, ikke sant?

  • You share some interesting musical ideas and techniques and clearly have a solid command of the fret board miles ahead of where I am at the moment. My only observation is that while the chromatic/sequential riffs can be interesting and have their place, to be effective I think they have to support a solid melody otherwise it just sounds like "noodling" to me. You get a very nice tone out of the instrument, by the way. Nice work.

  • wow man! You're an EXCELLENT teacher and performer!!! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, and you know A LOT!!! God bless!!!

  • Gracias Mortensen, excelentes lecciones de guitarra, muy bueno!!! y gracias por la invitación de amistad!!

  • @777i2i Thank you! :) well, it's really comfortable working from home you know.. ;)

  • hey are you swedish? we should totally jam lol !

  • @Bjorlin1 Norwegian... but, sure! :)

  • Just found your channel and I've got to say, this is really great stuff! good work! :)

I have a few questions about your setup though, since I'm trying to get my own jazz guitar sound good!

What strings do you use? what fx and amp? what mic is on your guitar? also were did you get the covers for your f-holes?

Hope you'll have time to answer a few of these! :)

    Best regards, Albin.

  • @albann90 Thank you, that's great to hear!

    Strings: d'addario chromes, a 0.11 set, but with a 0.12 on top.

FX: just a little compression, EQ, reverb and some delay.

The amp I use for most my videos is a Carvin Legacy 2, for jazz I also like Fender Twin, and just recently I tried a small Hendriksen amp which also was awesome (And weighs about a tenth of what the carvin does!!)

The mic on the guitar is a Kent Armstrong HANDMADE, don't know the model name.

f-hole covers from dougs plugs. BUT..

  • @MortenFaerestrand One VERY important part of MY tone is the pick, I use a really thick Red Bear Pick, and for me that has helped me A LOT, not just because the tone is pleasant to listen to, but because it inspires me to play better!

  • @MortenFaerestrand

Thanks a lot! very kind of you to answer those questions :)

Now I'm gonna go experimenting with my sound.. Recently bought an Ibanez pm35 and trying to figure out how to make the most out of it! :)

btw, do you happen to know where to get those picks in sweden? I understand that you at least live pretty close to swe.

Thanks again! I'm a big fan of your vids! :)

  • @albann90 Thanks man, I'm sure the PM35 will sound awesome! The only way (I think) to get the red bear picks is to order them on their website, since they hand make them for you! Besides the 6 week waiting list, that's works great:-)

  • good.

  • Excellent work!! How to go! Keep on making your good stuff. Your fan, Barry.

  • I truely liked to find or buy that backing track dear Morten. Is it available ,pls reply .

  • @jacobe888 Hey man, sorry, I did reply on your comment on my website, I thought you would be notified! Anyway, I put a link there, right below your comment:-)

  • @MortenFaerestrand

    Thanks man! , I bought it :-)

  • @jacobe888 cool, how about you posting a video respons to this video with you playing on the backing track? :)

  • @MortenFaerestrand

Hmm, I might do that for you if I cheer up a little some day dear Morten.

  • Phenominal music here Morten! Thanks so much for the invite. - Mike (Reese's dad)

  • @RockinReeseBoyd Thank YOU, Reese's dad;-)

  • This actually made me really practice sweeping ;) I´ve never done that much because I´ve allways considered that technique being kind of "boring" in the meaning that your ears are not able to hear what notes being played... it´s just "bluuurp" and then it´s over. To me it´s only a way to "show off".

But! This three string thing is much more interesting and leads me in to a more melodic approach.

So thank you for bringing me inspiration Morten!

  • @TheBassioso Glad to be of help:) Many of my students has had the same problem with sweeping as you describes, those of them who do what I tell them to usually starts using the technique in a more musical way.. :-)

  • I think that's the one with 4 parts or something? I better stick to composing some random songs. Some things aren't just meant to be ;)

I've only recently picked up composing after 10 years or doing not much with music. And even before that I almost never finished any songs. When I get back from vacation I'll try to pick it up again.

    Take care.

  • @ItsMeTheBadGuy no, it's the one with the London Orchestra:)

  • thanks - beautiful stuff - bless you

  • Maybe if you listened to some songs of my page you'd understand what a weird composer I am ;)

I have to record some of the improvisations of piano that I do sometimes. I hardly have knowledge of the guitar though but I'm going to listen to these lessons of yours some more.

  • @ItsMeTheBadGuy I heard the one with the aeroplane, sounds nice!! You could check out Pat Metheny's record Secret Story, it's a little similar, maybe you get ideas on how to play guitar on that type of music.

  • I've listened to quite some jazz but I just can't figure how you play the notes differently. I tend to stay safely to what the chords exist of.

When I play together with some people I usually lay the base of the song with it's chords and stuff, because for me to solo on someone else on just listening is terrible for me.

And from when I was young I never wanted to copy any songs so my insight on how songs are played by other people is pretty low.

  • very nice.

    you is realy good.

  • @CanaldoJotaH Thank you!

  • Love that intro!

  • @BrokenWingman Cool! :)

  • I wish I could get a quick start in understanding what it takes to play jazzy grrr.... Is the only way to play endless scales and chords. Or could I start with a set that would give me some basic insight.

Cuz no matter how I solo, it's still blues or rock alike, sometimes a bit jazzy but it's like using a b-flat in an e-minor scale and stuff.

  • @ItsMeTheBadGuy It is definately NOT the way to play endless scales and chords! All answers are in the music. When you say jazzy, what do you mean? Who do you like? Listen to that player you like, and figure out what they are doing, THEN analyze, or get help analyzing. And most importantly - listen listen listen listen!!

  • great playing.

  • @JAHSHBTV Thank you!!

  • Is it possible to get that backing track you here play over very well?

  • @jacobe888 I'll make it available on my website.

  • Great work/sound:)

  • god!! theme!!

  • Great ideas Sensei! I have used example's 1-3 in the past. Examples 4-5 are sweet. I will be getting on em asap!!! I loved what you did with example 5.

BTW, will you be continuing the Kenny Garret improv soon?

  • @brwnhornet59 Thank you, great that you liked them! :-) We'll see about KG, I have some other videos I'm gonna do first.

  • I love everything you are doing in this vid ... a pleasure to see it all !!! gus

  • @gusthebroken2 Great to hear bro! :-)

  • which one did you record first

  • @doctorwhoi1 the clean one. Why?

  • @MortenFaerestrand no real reason I was just wondering

  • @1212surface no problem! I use a plug in called Superior Drummer from toontrack which is really fantastic! They also have a budget version, EasyDrums which I think is quite good too.

  • @shuedue no, that's not me.. Thanks for commenting anyway! :-)

  • NICE!!!!

  • @organicshadows THANKS!!!!

  • Awesome dude! Thanks for share... Great playing man!!!

  • @brethunt77 Thank you! and you're very welcom! :-)

  • Cool technique, I like how you used it in your solos. You didn't make it sound like an exercise but rather something really musical. I've been trying to get my picking hand more comfortable with doing this upside down. Altogether down sweeps feel more awkward than up sweeps.

  • @D3R3K1600 Thank you, that's great to hear! That's really interesting what you say about up vs down strokes, to me it's opposite, down is easier then up! I've been trying to do this pattern the opposite way, and to me that is really hard! You should make a video of your variation on this technique, would be interesting to hear! You can post it as a video response to this video if you want..

  • @MortenFaerestrand I just might do that...

  • Very nice job. Some good ideas. And "ideas" is the key, as we both know;-))

    Good video!

    Frank

  • @FrankRMusic Thanks bro! :)

  • Excellent work,, so nice to hear a fresh approach to both right and left hand playing technique! Wonderful! It's very refreshing to hear something other than the "typical jazz techniques that get so overused!!! Keep up the good work!

  • @geetarnut Thank you, glad you liked it! :)

  • Morten, what is the solid body you're using in the right hand side of the video?

    Fri

  • @FriPilot it's a Roland from the early 80's. They stopped making them many many years ago, wich is to bad, it's a really great guitar!

  • Really cool!! thanks!

  • @walrus261 Thank you:)

  • Wow....this is nice!!

  • @raljazz Glad you're "wowed"! ;-)

  • sick drum beat!

  • Great Playing!!!! Amazing!!!

  • @b4she Thank you very much!:)

  • Det lyder sgu frækt (;

  • @Frommii1 hærligt frækt;-)
