  • I've decided to make a gas can banjo for my girlfriend's father's birthday in November. He is a music lover and 6'10. Do you think a 2 gallon tank and long neck would be better for this endeavor? Have you made one this size before? Any tips?

  • @MonsterpieceRecords I've made one out of a long neck, and out of a two gallon can. Only tip is this. If he plays a banjo with a resonator, the two gallon will feel right, as far as thickness goes. If he plays open back, the one gallon feels better and the two gallon feels too fat. Other than that, no idea which would be better for him... Good luck with it.

  • does this work with any tin can? i have an Electrosol jet dry powerball can that looks like it would be a nice, small banjo

  • @monkeysgoooh One gallon can? Should work.

  • that is the most dangerous tablesaw i have ever seen. count your fingers every time you use it...

  • @ramseyst42 Don't I know it. It is a dangerous saw. All the power saws used to be dangerous.. hahaha..

  • Would pine be strong enough to make the whole neck?

  • @cecil749 No don't use pine or any soft wood. It will flex and the neck will bend and every time it does the banjo will go out of tune. Plus pine will warp under the presure of the strings. I had a poplar neck. I reinforced it with a quarter inch of ebony and that helped, but best to use maple, mahogany, oak, or any hard wood.

  • do you need that on the guitar neck??? at 4:36 ??

  • @blabliblaism No, not if you're making it a 6 string. That shelf is to convert a 4 string to a 5 string.

  • thats a nice scroll saw ya got there...they come in handy too, what state do you live in?

  • @infernalcombustions Maine..

  • thats a nice scroll saw ya got there...they come in handy too

  • Wow. I got mine for only 10 bucks! AndI have 4 chrome tuning keys to go with it!!!

  • how much was that neck???

  • I don't remember exactly, but I'm thinkin' maybe $40 or so... Got it off'n ebay..

  • I don't have the belt sander but I still want to fit a 5th sting shelf, I'm going to have to carve and sand it by hand. Any ideas what wood would be soft enough to carve but strong enough to witstand the tension?

  • Yea, use a piece of Pine for the shelf. It's easy to carve and would be strong enough.. Have fun with it and let me know how it comes out..

  • every step of the making, did you talk tomrjrondeau???, or you only post the videos so he could find out what you were doing?

  • Yea, he picked out the can, and the neck. I explained what I was doing, gave him the choice, long neck or short with a conversion, such as that. He pretty much just said to make it the way I think it should be, so that's what I did.. I didn't post the vids till it was finished. Worked on it over a period of time, few weeks..

  • you just have way toooo much fun!!!!!!!!!!

    looks great as always!!!!!!!!

  • Really taking shape. *****
