I think it's stupid when they wear helmets and knee/elbow pads on the driveway or sidewalk though. What? Are kids so weak nowadays they can't take a scrape to the knee?
Thank you for this video. To the people that say you don't need a helmet you are morons. I don't care whether adults wear helmets cause all I can say to that is Darwin's theory of evolution. But kids need to wear helmets and if their parents won't make them wear one then they should be arrested for child abuse and if their kid gets killed they should be charged with manslaughter. There is too much information that riding a bike without a helmet is dangerous.
I remember, A few years back, I alerted one of my friends that a car was approaching, (he was biking) and he moved away before he could have gotten hit, I don't want to know what would have happened i I were there
More important than wearing a helmet is the need to make safer infrastructure built to avoid such accidents. If the cars would not have been parked blocking the view of traffic the accident could have been avoided. I think prevention of accidents needs the same if not more the focus than wearing a helmet. Preventing accidents is more productive in the safety of cyclist than protective equipment.
@heatherf45 , Bikes are safe. you are more likely to get hurt in a car then riding you bike. Bikes are one of the safest means of tranportation. Safety videos about helmet do a good job of scaring people off bikes. More people on bikes the safer the roads, making the rider less likely to be hit by a car. People in Amsterdam and Copenhagen have more trips by bikes then any US city and have far fewer bike injuries. It's not the bike.
@Chaprrito That's great for Copenhagen and no one is saying that the bike is dangerous. Here in the US where we are surrounded by cars many of which are driven by people who don't like or don't care about cyclists. It's this that makes helmets so important, I was once in an accident with a large truck; it destroyed my helmet but saved my head and to this day I still ride my bike and promote cycling. The cars are the problem but if wearing a helmet can so easily save your life do it.
the thing ist, we have to get parents to wearing a helmet as well to act as a role model for children. otherwise (most) children will take their partets who don't wear one as an example...
@downfader2 did you say you cater to hospitals? that would make you a nutritionist at best, hardly a neurosurgeon. don't speak like you know what you're talking about.

Safety saves? The child would possibly have been ok had he been trained to look properly.
I also disagree with the inferance that the helmet saved his life - a cycle helmet is a largely untested accessory - even now. Its like saying riding a bike cures cancer. Hmmm...
think about it, had he not had a helmet, his head would have hit the ground unprotected, and he may not be here today, then we'd be hearing a different story. do some research on Traumatic Brain Injury and you will see that being safe really can save. A helmet protecting a child from injury is NOT comparable to saying a ridiculous thing like riding a bike cures cancer. more like, wearing sunscreen can protect you from the sun. not 100%, but a lot better than if you had none.
Depends at what speed his head would hit the ground. Anything over 12mph and it isnt garanteed. Helmets certainly arent garateed against motorvehicles either.
I reitterate - had he been trained to observe the risks at junctions properly he would not be in the situation in the first place.
I'm well aware of trauma of the brain, I work in hospital catering and we meet people like this everyday. All you can do is limit the damage with a helmet - they are still largely untested.
On my school we have to wear helmets if we're going to ride bicycle, but today i heard two boys saying:do you have a helmet? No, but i don't care. the other boy said :(
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing. My 2 sons have to wear a helmet but I see every morning wear so many children don´t have one on. The police and teachers beg the parents almost on a daily basis to buy their children a helmet. It´s sad that they don´t take responsibility for their children´s safety.
