  • wow,..this was the day I was born..too cool...

  • FOUR PEOPLE WHO SADLY DON'T KNOW THE MAGIC OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!! I WILL PRAY FOR YOUR SORRY SOULS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've listened to a lot of Dead tunes on Youtube, but the comments on this one really touched my heart. I just want to say to LeppardBikini, we all share your loss. It's clear Bob was one of the 9/11 Heroes. We all mourn his loss.

And to MissTerry1979, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend Rick. When you listen to this song, he is here. So is everyone who ever loved this music, every time it's played. And so is Jerry.

Peace and Love, brothers and sisters.

  • @ballisticmayhem I hate to inform you, but most of the true excellence came early

  • Favorite thing about dead heads?? They don't give a damn about who liked or didn't like a song they enjoy. Why?? Because it doesn't stop us from liking it or from Jerry rockin'.

  • Hey Bob (NYFD)... I know your dancing up there to this, your favorite tune. Finally justice has been served! Thank you for being so brave..I'll never forget you or your smile. RIP...

  • This is really good, but the Other One>Me & My Uncle>Other One from this show is psychedelic excellence.

  • 9/2/80 is my favorite, but this is early excellence.

  • Bro...wow, Thank you SO much for posting this...this was on THE day I was born...irony in it's purest, I have seen it all now...I am touched.I do hope you don't mind if I share with you, a video of me and my friends performing the artist's we love. I know you'll enjoy , and thanks again

  • Had an English Springer Spaniel named Sugaree....Every time that I listened to the Dead & Sugaree was playing her tail was going a mile a minute - Guess she lived up to her name...

  • This has the crispness of a home show in their youth, a newer release and fantastic eternal song and of course, and...this is the Grateful Dead riding the crest of the groundswell of the sixties just crashing out....I mean...estimate that

  • 05/28/77 best version

  • @Bayview05 That and 10/16/77. that one has to be my favorite

  • I don't think it sounds bluesy. Kind of like 60's soul sound to it.

  • @JimmyPage97 maybe like "how sweet it is"

  • I love this song. Great in this bluesy mode. And when they turned it into a blazing anthem I can still hear Jerry's guitar ringing and thundering at the finale. special stuff.

  • Damn they're good!

  • Why do I love songs about bad women ? Oh, ya.....

  • always sweet to listen to....

  • i have this on vinyl, it's awesome

  • if i ever get to play with the band this would b the track id want to do

  • Jerry was the original Jedi

  • This is my favourite Dead song. There's a live 17 minute version I like.

  • @mikian007 I like the 81 Rockpalast version-Hit me like a Hammer 30 Years ago

  • @mikian007 I like the 81 Rockpalast version-Hit me like a hammer 30 years ago

  • johnny excellent! i went to concerts 79+ the quality wasn't as good as this....there's no head like a dead head.

  • Oh that base line, Mr Phil!

  • i Love this show! jerry's solo on me and my uncle, the fIrst three or four notes, the way he dives into the solo is PERFECT!

  • This is Billy Ylvisaker's song rip

  • I am DEADS #1 ALLTIME FAN . Steve in pgh,pa.

  • @tussionex4u Behind me..............Well I know the boys so I donn't count.

  • holy crap no idea this went back to 71

  • This was released on Garcia's first solo album in 72. They started playing it obviously in 71, I love the versions from 71. It really hit it's stride in 72. I think the best renditions of Sugaree are pre 74.

  • definitely phil

  • Love that bass line. Thanks for uploading!

  • @butchermachine Me too! That bass line is magical.

  • This song reminds me of a dear friend I recently lost. He loved Garcia. When I listen to this song, it's like he's still here. RIP Rick.

  • @MissTerri1979 This was the opening song on Jerry's first solo album on the B side. It became a Dead standard.

  • Isn't that Jack Casady standing to the right of Garcia in the picture above? It's not Phil......wonder where this picture is from - ?

  • That's Phil

  • @stonerbudkap

You're probably right, but I think it looks like Jack....

  • Jack had much longer hair.

  • right....and Jorma is playing the drums. no wait, that's grace slick.

  • my parents took me to a grateful dead show when I was 3. They told me I was totally into the music. I guess it stuck with me

  • Wow....amazing clarity, sounds as fresh as brand new, which Sugaree was in '71.

  • WOW! love this version and great quality for '71:)

  • great song!!

  • 5 *****'s All The way !!!!

  • Just fantastic...thanks for posting!

  • Why oh why was I born in 1983? :P

  • Uh, because your parents banged in 1982 . . . : )

  • HAHA LOL

  • LMAO. That just ain't right. Good answer.

  • at least u were old enough to actually be around before jerry died, i was born in 1992 so i was about 3 when jerry died be GRATEFUL to be born earlier than that.

  • i was born in 97, i wasnt born at all,but my first dead concert was in my mamas tummy and im a proud dead head forever

  • If my math serves me correctly your 12/13??? which officialy makes you the youngest "dead head" I've encountered...props

  • so your mom was pregnant with you for over 17 months?

  • Comment removed

  • How is that possible? Jerry died in '95

  • 1990 :(

  • Best band ever. R.I.P Jerry

  • This is such an awesome song. Very sexy. I just love that blues=y vibe.

  • You kno a song is up there with the best when it gives you the goosebumps, such as this one.

  • of all the Dead shows I ever saw, Harding Theatre was possibly one of the best. The band was close to their musical peak, Jerry's voice was still in tune (!!) and the theatre capacity was about 1,000 people...my only regret is that I didn't go both nights!!

On my way to NY to hear the band at Meadowlands next week!!! One man gathers what another man spills

  • meadowlands is in new jersey

  • Is this possible?

  • Strange mix

  • I saw the Allman Brothers last night at the Beacon and they played this song! I did not know this song! *bows head in shame* Really catchy song! Can't get it out of my head!

  • I'm having a blast reading CUJO. Easily one of SK's best. I wonder how Steve Kemp is going to figure into the rest of this story. :)

  • please forget that you knew my name, my darling Sugaree

  • I first heard this at a Bob Weir and Ratdog show at the Barbara B. Mann performing arts hall in Ft. Myers and it blew me away. Bob's vocal performance had nowhere near the impact on me that Jerry can deliver just even in recordings, wish I could've seen him perform it. One of the Dead's best.

  • shake it up now !!

you thought you were the kool fool>???

just one thing!! yea for me!!

  • This is one of my all-time favorite Dead tunes. I truly wish I could've seen Jerry sing it. It's such a soulful, beautiful tune! :)

  • best version of this, I like it - cool

  • Check out "Shake Sugaree" by Elizabeth Cotton origin of Sugaree

  • Many thanks for posting this gem. The band sound tight on this. Garcia's voice sounds so full of humanity and wisdom with its distinctive quaver.

Elizabeh Cotton had a (different) song of the same name. Mission Street R & B - that is what the Dead was all about.

  • I taped this show off the radio that night -loaned it to my brother a few years later and the tape got stolen - what a great night -

  • Such a great song.

  • Is this show on a dicks picks album?

  • Its not, got this from the Internet Archive.

  • whats up this is a good song

  • Beautiful, and in the same breath, wonderful, that these songs get to be experienced by one and all, that have never heard them before and a statement for the positive side of technology...

  • Oh I totally agree, I mean, I was turned on inadvertently by my dad 3 years ago (14 or 15) and I would have never gotten as into them if it wasn't so easy to get a true feel for the music over the internet!

  • this is exceptional because pig is there. damn i miss that man.

  • Hey J

Don't listen to the folks about the video. I am a newer Dead fan, and just heard this with Phil Lesh in LA. Great tune.

    Thanks.

  • hey man, i first heard this with phil lesh too only it was at Rothbury

  • I've been looking for this song for ever!! Thank you, thank you. Thier BEST song EVER!!

  • They are not moving man..

  • great song. i named my dog after it. best version i have heard except for when i saw them live

  • I had some friends who named their dog this also.

  • thanks man. great tune.

  • Thanks! Best version I've heard so far!
