I've spent the past year talking to pioneering docs in mind-body medicine: Bernie Siegel, Larry Dossey, Rachel Naomi Remen, and more. My dream is that we can shift the collective consciousness of the medical community, open our minds, & help people heal from the root rather than slapping on Band-aids that don't work. The more I study this, the more it blows my mind. It's going to have to be a grass roots effort. I need you all to spread the message. Thank you, dear ones. With love, Lissa
Please be patient, my friends. I will be giving you all the answers I've found- and all the scientific data references- in my upcoming book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013). I know it sounds simple. And I know you think you've heard this before- and you have. But I hadn't. Not until recently. And I went through medical training for 12 years and spent 10 years practicing. It's tragic...(cont)
She has no answers, but is merely parroting theories that have been bandied about for years. How does one overcome stress inducing/immune destroying PTSD that occurred in infancy? How does one rise above years of abuse, external, then internal? And if the body is a mirror, are those of is who had cancer at fault for not being 'balanced' enough? Did we create our illness, or did life situations that we faced? How do get rid of the masks? OK if you're rich to take time off to paint and navel gaze.
One is here to guide oneself by listening to oneself's inner core. This core is that which connects all matter in the Universe. a.k.a God. God speaks, even when all is silent.
I agree in that living in alignment with one's purpose is the key to a healthy and fulfilling life. It's still important to create balance through proper diet, exercise, sleep, and effectively managing stress. Caring for the body, heart and spirit are integrated, not hierarchical. They are all important.
She figured out the basics. That's actually good. No sarcasm. But a little more humility would be good. Cos beginners are not masters. I hope she keeps going for her own well being. Start teaching in ten years.

@socialworker11100 Actually, that's what those who learned about Maslow from college professors believe, but entirely backwards for motivation and change. Unless one starts at the top of the pyramid - having a moment of independence from base animal needs - one will never move and and, as Maslow hoped, "be what they can be." Key: Always start at the top.
@MorrisonEnterprise: No, she is kind of saying the opposite actually. Maslow says that your most basic necessities need to be met first before anything else (food, water, shelter) and she is saying you must first be spiritually, emotionally, fulfilled before the body can be healthy...
I loved the video. Her observation that we need to balance all aspects of our life to be healthy seems intuitive and obvious on one level. But then I realized I'm not really thinking about my health in the way she describes, and neither are any of the health care practitioners I've ever seen. This video has really changed the way I'm going to think about my own health issues. Thanks for putting it out there!
meh, nothing new here. What I don't like is how she talks about it like she's "opening our eyes". Just live simple. I don't need any MD OB/GYN to tell me what I already know like it's some big secret.

I would say though that NUTRITION is first and foremost the critical ingredients we must have to expereince spirituality, clear headedness etc you can't have spirituality when you have a toxic body, when the body is clean then you truly live.
@organicsuperman I too am a believer in the importance of nutrition however I think she makes a valid point that if we listen to our inner self (the pilot light) everything can come into balance, including nutrition. If we are truly in balance, we want to nourish our bodies with healthy foods. I know, I finally reached that point last year. :) I still enjoy the occasional goodies but they are much healthier goodies than I used to eat and I no longer want to poison my body with unhealthy foods.
@SuRiBu67 Thanks, well for me, my journey has been the opposite of that. I would have never known about my inner 'pilot light' if i had not really got myself healthy. My god i am a totally different person ONLY because of the foods i chose to eat and heal my body with, without this i would not have been able to discover ANYTHING. So from my own experience and that i see of others, feeding/nourishing the body is the FIIRST and ONLY thing we must do in the beginning. God bless.
@JoshMan522 It's a realization we come to over and over and over... You sound a bit flippant :) There are always things that "aren't us" that we need to be shedding. It's an ongoing process. You arrive, and minutes later, there is more to shed.

This is an amazing speech! But there is a lab test that will determine your stress levels and will give you a targeted supplement program to correct. Its a saliva test that measures your cortisol 4 times a day. You can test your hormonal levels, your digestive system, your immune system. Look for a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist. Surprisingly doctors don't do those tests. If you have a fungal infection or a parasite, good feelings won't correct that nor will modern medicine.
Sweeping generalizations do not serve us. To say that proper diet, exercise and adequate sleep are not important, and that one's attitude is the single most important factor determining out health, ignores the obvious fact that without proper diet, exercise and adequate sleep, it is extremely difficult to have a positive, creative and joyful attitude. Sheesh
@Biochemystery But at the same time if you still keep yourself in depression and gloomy, it can always make yourself worse. Even if you keep doing all those health factor for your body but still clinging onto the painful life, it can still have negative impact on your health. What she meant in this video is that if you keep your mind healthy your body can be healthy too.
@LegendBoy101 Of course I agree. But this is common sense, doled out by hundreds of self-help books and scores of health "experts." The title of this TED lecture is The Shocking Truth About Your Health. I just find that more than a little presumptuous.
@Biochemystery she's just pointing out the obvious, because it's what people always think they will remember and forget the most. You yourself sound a little defensive (i.e. less than positive). No offense, I do it to. That's why she sounds like a first grade teacher too, she is talking to the child in you. You know, that place where you didn't care who was right, you just wanted to play? It was a happy time. Some people are just having a hard time remembering this disposition.
@Biochemystery Lissa didn't say those things weren't important...just that they are only pieces of a bigger puzzle of health. If you noticed her model included those things as well as healthy relationships, career, environment, etc. and that to rely on diet, exercise, and sleep to cure what ails you won't work, we also need to pay attention to our job, our relationships, our environment as possible sources to our illness.
@Biochemystery I found her talk profound. I am one of those who did the proper diet, exercise and adequate sleep but still was energyless and physically sick most of the time. I find what she says in her talk here corresponds with what I have been through very well. She never says that diet, exercise and sleep are not important, just that attitude is more important. If you have a bad attitude about doing these things, you will not get half the benefit from them you could.
Trite. What is she saying that isn't just common sense? If everything is right, and you're happy, you'll be healthy. Happiness is health. Please tell me she's not charging to teach this stuff.
I will say, let's also not forget the Monsanto disease affecting us all. I know Drs have been taught for years and years that female conditions are "in Our Heads", even PMS etc.. One Dr admitted that to my friend. Ladies, that explains a lot!!. Those Drs are insulting to talk to becuz all they want to do is give meds, not discuss Nutrition, which helped more than anything. Some people do have imbalances. I think the info in this video, can only add to our Health Regime to help us flourish.
I never get colds/flu/sinus infections anymore and never get flu shot etc..but I do have chronic fatigue, adrenal exhaustion, maybe thyroid imbalance that doesn't seem to balance even with good nutrition & exercise. I need to take this woman's words & practice. THANK YOU from my heart
Stress can make a person sick. This is true. A bad relationship, money problems and job problems affect health. Even severe bullying at school can make your child sick (i.e. anorexia, migraines or stomach ulcers).
My point is that we are a mental being, emotional being, a spiritual being and a physical being. We are made up of all of these, and we must Feed each of these the right things, pure food, pure clear positive thoughts, feelings, exercise. Preventative medicine (natural) is important, So diet IS important, the right clean pure foods and water. Clear emotions and thoughts, re work the tapes, find a spiritual system that works for you, some mediation, some exercise, take care of your entire self,
My friend is a doctor and she decided to become a Psychiatrist, I asked her why? and asked her how many of her patients were clinically depressed and she said 50%. And she could not help them. Now I know that doctors study only 2 hours about nutrition and ) for spiritual cultivation, and prevention??/
@TheAscensionflame She could help people more by becoming a Holistic Life Coach. I've been to counselors in past who only had me talking in circles. good to have a listener. But, one visit from a life coach was totally different. Had me answering my OWN questions or needing to look at them. And yes, whole foods nutrition helps people too.
What a medical/spiritual visionary! Everyone should watch this 18 minute video...your body/mind/spirit will thank you and your spirit will soar with the possibilities. Thank you Dr. Lissa Rankin!
My prescription: A wonderfull spiritual men where I can enjoy sex with, a greenhouse full of healthy plants and abundant income, the possibility to help animals extensively, a couple of great friends I can call any time and to live in a peacefull nation with respect for nature and their people.
Dr. Lissa, You are my Shero! Thank you for this talk and your transparency -- you are such a gift. Your daily Inner Pilot Light e-mails are SOoooo brilliant, like a daily vitamin, they are a vital daily dose of self-love. My inner pilot light is so excited that you will soon be a Hay House author. We're eagerly awaiting your next book.
This video is powerful, I appreciate that Lissa Rankin gave up her traditional practice but still heeded her calling. Education is a similar traditional model that is frustrating teachers everywhere. Perhaps you can step away from the political model and still heed the calling to help students in other ways. Education is now empowering for a good number of students and it should be! Thanks to you Dr. Rankin, appreciate the inspiration.
Lissa, it took me 10 years and a massive heart attack to learn that I had to get out of the mentally abusive relationship that I was in. I left everything except for a sleeping bag, my pitbull, and a few pots and pans. I started over from ground zero. Now
I believe that our entire society's "limiting beliefs" around money are a big problem. I make less than $20,000/yr. and have managed to build a school in Nepal by donating half of my earnings, so I'm aware of what is possible. Still, there are realities that many of my co-workers face, like being bankrupted by medical bills, that are social, not spiritual problems. We should look inside for the personal answers, but I would hope that we also use that wisdom to start to solve the social ones too
@diptherio I don't know why but I never get sick and I made the decision of I get sick I would not use a hospital and get the financial pressure bring me down. I will accept my faith and die. I don't have a job and I don't have insurance. This decision makes me feel in peace with my self and not to fear the greedy doctors/hospitals in the world. Human health should be a right not a business.
@TantricBirth Oh good TantricBirth. I'm so glad I helped, though part of me wishes everyone who loves this video would go to medical school and join the army of doctors trying to change the system. Just follow your Inner Pilot Light where it leads love, and you will serve your purpose and heal the world.
@LissaRankin I'm touched that you replied Lisa. Yes....It is all about that pilot light for sure :). Many still hope for me to go back to the academic science world, but the total of my gifts seem to come together much better out here. It was while taking a practice MCAT at 5mo preggo totally needing to pee that I finally thought....this is just ridiculous! What if I took the 10ish yrs I would need to sequester myself into medical training and just used them to help now!?
I agree with most all of the sentiments expressed here. Still, I thought, what about all of us working-class folks who can't afford to take nine months off, or even one, to "paint and write and heal," even if we did liquidate our retirement accounts (which most of us never had the opportunity to accumulate in the first place)? Financial health is listed among the requirements for well-being, but for many in our economy that is simply out of reach. Is this only for the upper-middle class?
@diptherio You say financial health is simply out of reach, but to me, that means this stone of the cairn is out of balance for people who say this. Many of us have fears and limiting beliefs around money and will find it hard to get healthy in this area until these self-sabotaging money beliefs are healed. No, this is not a rich person's self-healing journey. The Inner Pilot Light will heal everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. All the answers- even the $ ones- lie within.
Thank You DR Rankin for being a forerunner in the future of medicine. I am an RN of 35 years who figured this out as well in the last 10 years. I now practice something called Quantum Neurological Reset Therapy QNRT if you google. The basis of this therapy is exactly as you said, with the results being life changing and, best of all, permanent! There are currently about 15-20 practitioners nationwide licensed for this work. Amazing. It's a beautiful thing to see the growth in the world.
Amazing talk and an amazing video -- after working for several years as a health professional in New Zealand, this completely affirms things I have felt, but not spoken about, for a long time. Thank you!
Thank you, I am reminded to reassess my priorities. I am grateful but truthfully for me: something just doesn't sit right - as I watch, the non-verbal language isn't congruent, this person is uncomfortable with themselves and is prescriptive & patronizing to me. My feeling tells me this is not intentional and is well meaning. I wish this person well.
Thank you Lissa for your great courage and grace as you keep pushing the envelope. You are the greatest inspiration for how to be on that edge with complete vulnerability, trust, and power. I so look forward to greater numbers getting to know and experience the full depth and breadth of your gifts. This video is just a drop of the ocean that is your heart, soul, and destiny that I have been honored to glimpse. With Eternal Gratitude, Jon
Elisa, I sincerely apologize. Someone else pointed out the same limiting slide. Someone else made my slides and I'm afraid I was insensitive enough not to be bothered by that.
I love and support many in the LGBTQ community and am sincerely sorry if I offended you.
@elisaday56 Oh you're welcome. I'm really sorry. I wish there was an easy way to change it. I totally would. Just know I totally support those who are authentic in their sexuality, however they choose their partners. Thanks for pointing it out. My assistant and I both apologize and I will be more careful of this next time around.
It is hard to take someone's talk serious when they exclude so many people from it. For "sex life" it showed a male and female symbol intertwined. Not only does that exclude the just about the entire LGBTQ community, it also excludes all the people who do not rely on partner sex and use masturbation as the main component of their sex life.
Lissa you speak to all of the doctors out here who have known there is something resisting healing. I think you have found not only words for it but a hope for cure. Sending love, support, and gratitude.
Thanks Lissa for this vote of confidence this morning in Wales UK, where we are about to open our new Wellness Centre in the small town of Neath which has some of the worst health indices in Europe. I really hope we can spread some of this message which has been at the forefront of my mind for the last 3 years or so. I too was taught the biomedical model and it takes a while to figure out that that's not what its all about and somehow we have lost so many natural connections e.g. intuition.
We just posted the link to our Facebook so that the women of S Factor can find their way to your inspiring thoughts. Thank you Dr. Lissa Rankin for showing up for women and shining a bright alternative torch in the prescription-filled paths of western medicine. Our core beliefs that healing from within are in total alignment. Rock on sister!
AMAZING. I'm no doctor but I have known what you speak of for a long time; through study and practice on a different route. Now I just hope that one day I can be as eloquent as you so I can help the women of this planet give birth gently.
You all are so warming my heart. Thank you for holding me in the web of your love and support as I venture out with this radical message. I can't tell you how much it means to me. Thank you.
Thank you so much for confirming I AM on the right path. I changed my journey 5 yrs ago when chest pains put me in the hospital... I said I'm too young and there's way more to life than the good money I am earning.... Stroking out was not an option!! I am still tweaking things but know I have made the right, difficult decisions. Now to put the last pieces together... thanks for this great confirmation Lissa!
What a wonderful and inspiring TEDx talk, Dr. Rankin! May the Whole Health Cairn model you developed make it into our health care system and reshape our ideas of what really matters when it comes to health. Thanks for being such an inspiration and innovating force!
Lissa, thank you for sharing your personal journey and putting your message out there. I applaud your efforts and relish your Inner Pilot Light emails every day. May your message spread far and wide and inspire others - including doctors - to look at the big picture this way!
I know why you felt naked - it can be terrifying to open up like that! Congratulations for doing it.
Breast cancer at age 50 was my eye opener. Now I am studying philosophy, having discovered that that is my path. There's no money in it! But who needs money when you have happiness.
So beautiful and so true! Pleasure is a real healing force, and massage is a tool anyone can learn to bring more relaxation and pleasure back home into the body.
Dr. Lissa... I am so friggin PROUD Of you! and YES!!! yes... your opening statement IS outrageous! and... its EXACTLY what we need to hear! Just like that. from YOU a doctor. You know, which is why you are waking up thinking how wildly audacious that statement was... but its the TRUTH! and weeeee alllllllllllll know it now! yes, just like you outline here in your speech! even the DOCTORS and medical scene know it. YOU are connecting the dots, the stones (LOVE the image of the cairn!).
Lissa - thank you for being a model for integrated health & well being. I love that you don't disparage the medical establishment, but instead acknowledge that it has a place among a more inclusive holistic approach.

@Biochemystery I don't take away from the vid that those things aren't important, but rather that they are not enough.

TheAscensionflame 2 months ago
@TheAscensionflame She could help people more by becoming a Holistic Life Coach. I've been to counselors in past who only had me talking in circles. good to have a listener. But, one visit from a life coach was totally different. Had me answering my OWN questions or needing to look at them. And yes, whole foods nutrition helps people too.

Now
I feel a lot better. Broke but healthier.

We should look inside for the personal answers, but I would hope that we also use that wisdom to start to solve the social ones too
diptherio 2 months ago
@diptherio I don't know why but I never get sick and I made the decision of I get sick I would not use a hospital and get the financial pressure bring me down. I will accept my faith and die. I don't have a job and I don't have insurance. This decision makes me feel in peace with my self and not to fear the greedy doctors/hospitals in the world. Human health should be a right not a business.

TantricBirth 2 months ago
@TantricBirth Oh good TantricBirth. I'm so glad I helped, though part of me wishes everyone who loves this video would go to medical school and join the army of doctors trying to change the system. Just follow your Inner Pilot Light where it leads love, and you will serve your purpose and heal the world.
LissaRankin 2 months ago
@LissaRankin I'm touched that you replied Lisa. Yes....It is all about that pilot light for sure :). Many still hope for me to go back to the academic science world, but the total of my gifts seem to come together much better out here. It was while taking a practice MCAT at 5mo preggo totally needing to pee that I finally thought....this is just ridiculous! What if I took the 10ish yrs I would need to sequester myself into medical training and just used them to help now!?
TantricBirth 2 months ago
I agree with most all of the sentiments expressed here. Still, I thought, what about all of us working-class folks who can't afford to take nine months off, or even one, to "paint and write and heal," even if we did liquidate our retirement accounts (which most of us never had the opportunity to accumulate in the first place)? Financial health is listed among the requirements for well-being, but for many in our economy that is simply out of reach. Is this only for the upper-middle class?
diptherio 2 months ago
@diptherio This is for the unemployed: to cope with the unemployed situation with the inner pilot light.
SuccessfulStu1 2 months ago

Thanks Lissa for this vote of confidence this morning in Wales UK, where we are about to open our new Wellness Centre in the small town of Neath which has some of the worst health indices in Europe. I really hope we can spread some of this message which has been at the forefront of my mind for the last 3 years or so. I too was taught the biomedical model and it takes a while to figure out that that's not what its all about and somehow we have lost so many natural connections e.g. intuition.
