Autotune isn't so bad, until you start noticing it. That's when you start wondering about those who NEED to use it, about the motives and objectives of those who are promoting them in the first place, and about those who care less whether their favorite artist can sing in tune or not.
I think the short film 2081, or the Kurt Vonnegut story on which it is based, are worth considering in this context, too.
Most people who are young adults now, starting paying attention to music when they were in their early teens (13 or 14), so the level of fine tuning would have been far too minimal by the time they reached adulthood. As a young child, the mind is constantly growing & learning, so the more music a person is exposed to from a very early age (less the 10), the faster they'll know what they want out of music as an adult.
@anina114 So many young people about my age, say they love music, but I know that they could never sit down for an hour & actuallly listen to an entire LP. Other things always seem to be more important & I always wonder why they say they love music. It's crazy! You have to give time to music. Before my early teens I used to skip tracks on CDs. But then after I was 13, I always listened to LPs in full because I knew the artist had taken the time to arrange a full piece.
I hate to say it, but as much as I love them, The Beatles simply could not survive in this world of auto-tune, Bieber and Cyrus. Their whole career would have been dictated by focus groups and the record labels. They would be soulless, and just as forgettable as all the other acts in music today.
So many musicians & bands we love, would not make it today because they wouldn't look right. Saying that I do think it depends on who your audience is. If your aiming for for top 20 hit I agree, but I love The Pogues & Shane for instance is beautifully ugly.
As our society gets dumber our music, movies and TV shows will also get dumber. The music industry, much like the movie industry, is catering to people with very limited intelligence. Imagination has become a thing of the past. It's been replaced with CGI, HD and Surround Sound. Just stop buying the junk and they'll stop making it.
As it seems to be the opinion of most people who have commented here, I also agree with how sad the situation of music these days has become, how for the record companies, it's all about the money and not even near enough about artists with actual skill, as opposed to artists who simply sings what their company writes for them. Which is why it makes me happy to see that a documentary concerning this pollutive wrongdoing has been made.
I like all of the people posting comments trying to act like they're smart or something. I'd be more likely to take your comments seriously if you would just proofread your shit. Words like "buisness," "everybodey," and "audiance" are words that intelligent people should know how to spell.
Yeah I wish. The majority of "the audiance" doesn't know swat about music. They'll just listen to what MTV tell them to listen to. True music lovers are a dying breed.
We all talk about the superficiality of the music industry, today. But what are we doing about it as artists? I was the first American Jazz singer to sing in Tianjin, China's third largest city. There is no jazz there and, after one month of singing there, coming to Tokyo, where they just jazz, I am depressed because it's not about the music, anymore, just about how much money the club owner is going to make and who is going to bring in the most people. The music is irrelevant.
yes finally...i will watch this documentary when it gets here...i am so tired of this fake shit...the most talented musicians are so underrated like bilal and martin luther...people don't even know who they are!!!
It's all about showbuisness? What about the communicationbuisness?!Wasn't the original cause to play music to communicate in higher manner?I don't need no "artists",who spend more time in the gym or on shopping, than writing good music. What we need are communicators and no show-offs.Jimi Hendrix did not sing"Excuse me,while 'I shop and buy'",did he?Oh boy,I hope it's gonna have a happy end.How can so many people be so blind?Well, I guess every society has the heros , they deserve..
Record companies realized a long time ago that true talent is irreplacable. That is we get all these disposable "artists" cause someone will always be younger and hotter and thus replaced easily.

If music mattered, Neurosis would be mainstream right now. That band kills it, for real.

Yeah... I totally agree with everybodey.
Would like to see the complete documentary.
But even this crappy music industry can just not beat good pure music. At the end the good music will prevail.
They will make some(huge amounts!!)money now until everybody gets bored and wants something else again.
I´ts just a reflection of these crazy times we are living in now(consumer society).
But for me good music is like the truth!! at the end it will always overcome!!!
