Oh My God - how gay ballet can be but never opera, opera is always tears, laughters, comedy, and drama...but this is ultra hyper gay and the title in french is "Je Suis Gay"
Merci! Merci! EncOOOOOOre! EncOOOOOOre!
Exactly so! I have to watch this about 10 times every day before and after work. There's nothing quite like it. Beautiful tone and expression. You made my day.
i guess that the sunglasses refer to the often greek sunshine weather. the sign behing him sais "Visiting the arcaiological area. tickets". on the left on the scene, that square small bulding is what in grecee call "periptero". you can buy almost everything there. also more modern greek signs. the scenografers dressed the scene in a clever and enjoyfull way. nice job
I know he recorded La Belle Hélène and also La grande duchesse de Gerolstein for Emi/Virgin and Iphigénie en Tauride for Archive/DG all with Minkowsksi and Les Musiciens du Louvre for .
Offenbach is even funnier when it's not popped up. The old René Liebovits (sp?) recording is absolutely sublime in its idiomatic vulgarity. Offenbach would have loved it. In English it becomes second-rate music-hall.
We saw an English Language verion of this same show in London a while ago but I like the French version better. It is on DVD but I wonder if this is from a French TV transmission as I am not sure if the camera angles are the same. I'm old enought to remember the Saddlers Wells version of the 1960s that was really good.
I loved it musically: but I still find opera singers' idea of 'comic acting' pretty dreadful. The best Belle Helene I ever saw was the old Sadlers Wells version in the 1960s, which was truly funny.

La Belle Helene is so funny.
Could you upload songs from the first act like "Au mont Ida, Trois déesses" and "Les rois de la Grèce" ?

Hilarious! The scenery! The costumes! The wonderful (and sexy) tenor AND actor Yann Beuron, and of course Offenbach's musical gags! Priceless!
