  • Florez is good, and we are lucky to at least him today with us. But his singing is not in the same league as Pavarotti's - the length of Pav's high C's is much longer in each case, and the Pav High C is effortless, it's like he is singing any old note - whereas Florez, one can see, is at the end of his register and is under pressure on the High C. A lot for Pav is natural talent, but also a truly superb technique. Pavarotti remains the king of the High C aria.

    I totally agreed with your observation.. Pavarotti sings the 9 C's just lika another note. In Pavarotti its seems very easily. Most part of the tenors thet tries to sing that aria, makes a "step" or a "falsete". With Pavarotti the note comes nsturally as a common note.

  • Pavarotti had great range back then but the years took their toll on his voice. At the end of his career his voice was still strong but his range was somewhat limited. Still he will be remembered as one of the all time greats. Far superior to what we have now.

  • En mi opinión es una fuerza de la naturaleza. Si no llega a ser por la diferencia temporal diría que esta Opera la escribieron para él Bravo Luciano. Y enhorabuena y gracias a Onegin65 por esta maravilla.

  • Cornel Macneil had a high C and a low F. Jerome hines, a basso profundo, is on record singing a high A flat! thomas hampson, a lyric baritone sang a low D. people who sing in choirs alot say " Well I sing bass in the choir and I can't hit a high e flat so if he can he must be a baritione. Not true! it just means that that singer is not lazy and has worked on his high voice.

  • Can't believe all the hate Florez is getting on this video ... so what if he has a light voice and may "always be a Rossini tenor"? Ain't nothing wrong with that! Plus, his French is quite a bit better than Pav's.

    Pavarotti ha sido muy grande y es de justicia reconocerlo. Florez es muy grande y somos muy afortunados los que podemos disfrutar de su arte en la actualidad. Además los dos son grandes personas, modestas y muy cercanas al gran público. Tenores así solo salen cada 30 o 40 años.

  • Detesto que comparen a Florez con Luciano, no existe manera de hacer la comparación. Luciano está entre los más grandes de la historia, a él solo se le puede comparar con Caruso, Bjorling, Gilgi y tenores del calibre. El timbre de Luciano tiene una belleza y una plenitud que nadie escuchó en toda la segunda mitad del siglo XX, solo el de él. Florez es un gran tenor de enorme técnica, pero de voz no tan brillante. Lo compararía más con Krauz que con Pavarotti.

  • @tomviolenceisadream Si pero Luciano, Caruso, Bjorling, Gigli, todos eran tenores líricos. Muy bien, los mejores del mundo, en su categoria. Florez es ligero y Krauz era lirico ligero. Otras categorias. Florez puede ser el mejor ligero del mundo (Kraus ya ha muerto) Comparemos dentro de la misma categoria.

  • El mejor "A mes amis" que he escuchado es este de Pavarotti, y el final larguisimo NADIE LO HA HECHO, ademas su voz redonda y llena, no tiene comparacion.

  • @acitipo Hola Pava es el mejor LIRICO de todos los tiempos para mi gusto, sin embargo hay quien hace el ultimo DO 2 segundos mas largo, es una muy decorosa presentación del tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini a quien no conozco muy bien ni tengo muchas referencias, pero en esta ária por timbre, color y no ser tan ligero prefiero que a Juan Diego a quien aprecio muchisimo. Juan Diego interpreta con una gran técnica pero los gustos discrepan y yo prefiero los dramaticos, spintos y liricos en ese orden.

  • @andriv123 De acuerdo contigo; en que Luciano fue la voz mas bella como lirico; pero recuerda que comenzo cantando cosas muy ligeras como la Hija del Regimiento,Guillermo Tell, etc, con el tiempo la voz gano redondez, profundidad, y potencia se volvio mas lirico, y dejo las operas primeras, lo mismo pasara con JDF, Luciqno dijo, un dia terminare cantando Puccini, aunque no quiera, y asi fue, la voz se cansa, es una gran verdad, no me extrana que le pase a JDF lo mismo;

  • 9 top c's in such a sort time. Amazing... most cant' cope with this. Wonderful. When I hit a top C it feels like the top of my scull is about to blow off. Being that I am a baritone ... I suppose this makes sense. God old 'Pav'... really ways one of the greatest.

  • You're lucky to be one of the few people who knows that it's possible for baritones to hit the high C at all. Most people still believe that everyone (except the most elite singers) is stuck with only 2 octaves or so of range.

  • If you're a baritone, you don't have the mechanism unique to tenors that allow them to his the C. If you're actually able to sing it that note. You've either not known your vocal type or someone who doesn't know much about the male voice has incorrectly convinced you that you're a baritone. Did some choir director tell you that you were a baritone or something? Choir directors are notorious for destroying peoples voices and making people sing notes that their vocal types shoudn't.

  • leonard warren had high c's and he was definitely a baritone. it is said that titta ruffo also had high c's. as an example, sam ramey, a bass, had a high A, does that make him a baritone? range is important in determining voice type but it is not the be all end all determination.  i think timbre is more important. some baritones can hit high c's and still be baritones.

  • Just keep in mind that in his 1972 performance of this aria at the Met Opera he stirred the crowds into giving him 17, mark the number, 17 curtain calls. Unsurpassed since.

  • Oh well, they keep trying but no one can do it like Pavarotti does. He just has that extra something that makes him go head and shoulders above the rest. Pav is magnificent!

    The critic could have at least SHAVEN, and the interview conducted in a better place than his apartment with umbrellas, etc.

    Aside from listening to Pav, this Doc is rather CRAPPY.

  • gosh. give these people a break. all u sceptics out there just sit and type and criticize, how easy! the mind may move fast, beyond standards, expecting greater thn greater; but the human body has its limits. these voices are already superb. pavarotti's voice was god-given, like whitney, lile, maria callas, like streisand, like mariah carey. dont hide these buddin singers beneath their shadows. and hush or, at least b constructive if ppl wanna comment.

  • I think andante735 you should have your ears checked and read the comments of many others here who talk about his ugly caprina voice. Go listen to people like Gianni Raimondi, Mario Filippeschi, Pavarotti not to mention another 50 others to understand what real high notes are in a "man's"voice. I want to see how wonderful Florez is singing with his manly middle voice! By the way, I alternated with Pavarotti,Giacomini to name two. so a little respect please. The only ass here is you.

  • Dude, if you alternated with those guys, you wouldnt be here on you tube. Giacomini, and pav are world beaters, world beaters dont hang on you tube. Florez, in all fairness, is a man, just a different one.

  • Florez's voice will darken as he ages, and while I'm not sure exactly which roles will be appropriate for him, I expect he will excercise the same highly intelligent and thoughtful judgement that he always has. We all miss Pavarotti, and there will never be another. I'm grateful we have Florez- he's the best singer we have IMO. I think his voice might be to specifically leggiero to pull off Rodolfo, and it's not a big voice. Who knows?

  • Maestro Pavarotti had the unique ability to do coloratura as if he was a tenore leggiero while being a tenore lyrico with quite a punch. I like Florez at lot. He is a fantastic tenore leggiero. However, I doubt that his voice will darken gracefully so that he can take heavier roles. I would love to be wrong on this one :)

  • Do you think he'd ever be able to pull of La Boheme? Later on in his career of course.

  • After thinking a bit more on it...I don't think he's ready for Boheme...he may be able to pull off the begininng and do a decent che gelida and o soave fanciulla, but he'd get massacred in the third act...his voice is just too small.

  • Luciano was the most incredible voice on the last 50 years. Sorry but comparate Luciano and Juan Diego is a mistake... The voice of J. Diego is nice only in the hihgs... Is not enough!

  • Pavarotti himself said to Florez, when they were much younger (and when the first was still alive), that, when Florez's voice matured, he would become one of the finest tenors who ever lived. I think I can speak for all of us when I say "Please let maestro Pavarotti be right!"

  • Opera is one of the few fields where 'ectomorph' and 'mesomorph' voices can end up singing the same repertoire. To a large extent, these vocal types are not a function of technique but of genetics. It stands to reason that they score points in different ways if they're really good. And it's effete to whine for a steak when you're in a restaurant that only serves fish. This singer made me love (not "prefer") this version while I was listening. That's surely enough!

  • Considering the fact that Maestro was able to sing La Fille du Regiment and Aida with great skill, he certainly was exceptionally talented. I highly doubt that Florez can dare to sing Aida..

  • How can anyone compare the beautiful voice of Pavarotti to that ugly, nasal voice of Florez not to mention the goat vibrato. He is a nice Rossini tenor but much too light for anything else. If he is the heir to Pavarotti, then God help us!

  • He is not the heir to Pavarotti, far from it... and he will not grow much, but will always be a Rossini tenor.

  • you say that like its a bad thing, hes probably the best Rossini tenor in the world, and rossini is the most technically demanding music ever written for the voice, especially rossini tenor roles, which all have multiple high C's, or higher. JDF has more technical dexterity than pavarotti in that register, and there are roles, like Arturos big aria in the bellini puritani, where there are high notes pavarotti had to sing in falsetto because he couldnt do it in full voice, pavarotti isnt perfect

  • I agree with everything you said. Pavarotti is not right for many of the roles he has done, including this one. But people who claim Florez to be the heir to Pavarotti are totally mistaken, Florez will never make Puccini popular. Florez himself admitted that his voice won't change much and he's happy to be a Rossini tenor. And why not? It beats working.

  • What an awful,unintelligent statement to make. If you can't say anything worthwhile or contribute something of substance to this thread, then you should move on. What you consider ugly, is not shared by practically all of the opera going public- so consdier yourself part of sad, pathetic little minority. You can also recognize the fact that according to your line of thinking, Pavarotti had a real penchant for ulgy,nasal tenors with goatlike vibrati. Basically you're an ass.

  • Acabo de escuchar a Rockwell cantando ah ms amis.. y la verdad no tiene la voz comparable a la de Pavarotty ni la de Juan Diego. Y con todo el respeto al Sr. Rockwell tiene movimientos demasiados amanerados que ya no parece militar

  • This Opera is by Donizetti. Also, I seriously doubt Blake could come close to Pavarotti. In what way, if I may be so bold?

  • I was actually replying to a comment about Rossianian tenors, for some reasons it did not post as a response, but a comment.

    Blake all during his career was always in top shape, attacked all embellishments and coloratura fearlessly, accurately and artistically. Pav, was not great on that, he was a beautiful lyric tenor, but not always great on coloratura.

    Blake's voice was not as mellow and velvety as Pav, but I repeat, he was, and still is though retired, King of Coloratura...and Rossini.

  • Pavarotti could sing coloratura very well as a young man. His accuracy in faster passages declined as he got older.

    I had no idea there was a live recording of this production from Covent Garden!!! Why on earth have they not released it?!?!?! Does anyone know how I can get it!!!!

  • It wasn't a live recording...it was done in the studio...this is why the acoustics are so good...

  • Then why does Pavarotti's pour mon ame have applause at the end? Did the documentary producer just insert it into the end of the studio recording, or is it a live recording?

  • They inserted it at the end of the recording. Search Pavarotti Sutherland La fille du regiment on youtube...you'll find the entire aria 'Ah mes amis'

  • Florez is "light" in every way in comparison to Pavarotti, and I am not referring to him being a tenore leggero. Get a clue ladies and gents.

  • I expect Florez was inserted in this tribute to show the torch is being passed on to a new generation of tenors. A tenore leggero is expected to hit those high "Cs" but Pavarotti was a tenore di grazia. Nothing against Florez but he is not in the same league as Pav - not yet - not in tessitura, vocal weight, timbre, passaggio and so on.

  • Definetely Pavaroti. He sang the Cs with a full body, thick column of sound and still retaining a very lyrical, warm sound. Florez has a very thin voice, fabulous but thin.

  • Also it is possible to say that florez, in this recording, emits these high c's, in a different way, for example, to like ithe it did in the La Scala, which is mas similarly to Pav's version, and he is simply phenomenal, if I prefer someone?, I agree with operadm, both have very bellisimas voices, I mean , for some reason Pav name him, his successor not?

  • Juand Diego Florez is certainly a force, but I prefer Pavarotti's approach to the music. The Cs are not as focused but his interpretation has more bounce and is simply more fun to listen to.

  • Juan Diego Flores has a gorgeous voice - simply amazing. But... Pavarotti had a depth and like chsilber said, a warmth and power to his voice that is just unmatched. And something else to remember, the recording of Pavarotti was 40 years ago. I have some very old records and they just can't compare to the technology of today. So everything considered - Pav wins (for me) hands down. No one can touch his upper register.

  • I find Pavarotti has a more powerful and a warmer voice. However, he reaches to the top Cs "from below". Juan Diego Florez, on the other hand, "pings" the notes spot on, which is really amazing. Reaching these 9 Cs, I find him better than Pavarotti.

  • I completely agree. Florez is the heir the great tenors of the past. All these singer have operas in which they are the best. As concerns Florez, it is La fille du regiment. As far as Pavarotti, I think Rigoletto.
