I think that a Mosberg M590 is a good gun to use. It's strong and can easily blow legs clean off. And I, being the zombie nerd I am, own the $300 Apokatana. It's a mix of a katana and a broad sword.
When trying to fight off a zombie I would prefer some distance.

first of all swinging a crowbar... very awkward cant imagine that being a great choice. The Kbar knife while really a great knife not good if you need to destroy the brain skull could deflect it too easy. better with a hammer. But if your going something like a hammer go with a hatchet back side can still be used to hammer and the front is a axe. Most machetes would suck as well most are far too light to trust to sink through bone.

Honeslty, why not just get a cheap $75-100 Mosin Nagant 91/30? The 7.62x54r round it fires can take down anything on the North American continent, and with an included bayonet, it doubles as a 5 1/2ft spear. Even if it stops shooting (which is doubtful), it can be used as a huge wooden club, a boat oar, or just firewood.. Plus, that old surplus Soviet or Romanian ammo is pretty cheap..

Weapons I'd use from around my house are, 1 a power-hitter metal baseball bat, idk what you're talking about cuz I've smashed this thing against cinder blocks and tree trunks as hard as I can and only minor minor knicks in the paint were noticed. 2, parts of cymbal stands from a drum kit, not many people know this but those stands are made of some really sturdy metal and can be adjusted so they are very adaptable. 3, a big spanish-made buck knife with a razor-sharp one edged blade.

But for those ppl have guns then that's good for them. Let's just hope they have enough ammo. Cuz the gun and grocery stores are the first to go.
@bustaclown89 I agree that the idea of high-powered weapons during a zombie outbreak like saying you're going to use a unicorn as your mode of transportation during a zombie outbreak. But almost all farmers have shotguns and I know a lot of people who have ww2 military grade high-caliber rifles. It's not rare and ammo isn't super rare if you don't waste multiple rounds on each zombie.
@GeneralDomination What's your definition of a high powered weapon? 5.56? 7.62x39? .308? 6.8? .338 Lapua? .50BMG? 12ga? Semi automatic AR15's and AK47's (and Chinese, Bulgarian, or Romanian AK variants) are two of the most common rifles in the shooting community. Police/military-spec Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 shotguns are quite common choices for home defense too. Hunting rifles are largely chambered in .308, even the ones you find in Wally World.
@Cosmo1093 I can tell you this much. If you went and collected all the ammo you could find you would get far more shotgun shells than any other one bullet. The 7.62 may be common among the gun enthusiast community but if you go somewhere like Canada where guns are much harder to come by you may find 7.62, 6.8 and 5.56 rounds hard to come by, especially after most have been used up by survivors. And when I say high-powered I mean the kind of stuff the army uses.
@GeneralDomination The problem with shotgun shells: most are simply low-brass birdshot or target rounds for trap/skeet, especially in Canada. That is nothing close to full-power 00 buckshot or 1oz slugs. Yes, its better than nothing, but is FAR from ideal. Birdshot is for birds. Buckshot can stop angry bears..
The standard issue rounds for the US military are variants of the 5.56 NATO round and the .223/5.56 rounds are the most common rifle calibers in the US, not counting the .22lr.
@Cosmo1093 Birdshot might not be capable of taking down bears but I've seen a bear get hit with two slugs and keep going (mind you the third one did it). Birdshot has enough power to penetrate the human skull at up to 10 feet. And buckshot is actually the most common varient of shotgun ammo. And the 5.56 NATO round is very common around military bases. Alas there are few bases with low supplies in Canada and I'm pretty sure the army would burn through the ammo before you get it.
@GeneralDomination 10 ft isn't very much range and kinda defeats the purpose of having a shotgun. At 10 ft, you're better off with a Katana or baseball bat or something -- something that doesn't make an unnecessarily loud bang to kill something at a mere 10 ft. With slugs, its all about shot placement. One to a bear's head is lethal.
Going to Canada and searching for ammo is almost like a bad joke to begin with....up there, you're better off just finding a secluded cabin.
@Cosmo1093 sorry wrong figures. Just tested it today and birdshot has more than enough power to destroy the brain at at least 20 feet. I didn't test on humans I tested on 2X4s. And if you think surviving a zombie outbreak in the states is easier than in canada you're sadly mistaken. The population density in the states and the long canadian winters are two reasons why you should go north first thing. And a secluded cabin won't have enough supplies to last the winter.
@Cosmo1093 and btw the reason I keep talking about canada isn't just because it's the best place to be during an outbreak. I live in canada so whatever guns you have available in the states are useless to me. And shotguns and hunting rifles are very common in canada as well as ammo for both. It's not as abundant as the states but neither are the people and therefore neither are the zombies. Less zombies means you use less bullets.
@GeneralDomination Well it all depends on the location in either country. Being in a city like Toronto or Montreal doesn't help when it comes to population density. Likewise, living in the backcountry of the US, away from cities (or in Alaska) also means less people/zombies. And 20 ft still isn't a lot, especially with a hunting shotgun with a 4 round capacity at most. The max effective range of buckshot is 120-150ft. It can still be lethal past 300ft, but is just very inaccurate.
@Cosmo1093 If you live somewhere way off the grid in the US you'll be fine for as long as you can get supplies without traveling too far. Unless by chance a horde of wandering zombies happens upon your cabin. I've been the the states and it's noticeably more populated even way out of the cities. There's houses everywhere. In canada most of the country is entirely empty. So zombie hordes would be damn lucky to come across your hideout. In the states it's more likely.
@GeneralDomination One thing you failed to consider about population density is that Americans have guns -- and lots of them (something like 300 MILLION guns, belonging to ~34% of the population, in 40-45% of households). "High-powered" weapons are relatively common, and most owners are fairly decent shooters. Even if the US has a higher population density, how many zombies will there really be after everyone is done shooting? That's not something you can really predict.
@Cosmo1093 The problem is how fast the infection spreads. Imagine if someone, just one person, got the virus in new york and carried it for an hour or two before turning into a zombie. If it's highly infectious they could infect easy 1000 people and how many people would they infect? It snowballs fast and the faster it spreads the less shooters you have for your many guns. And if it happens while people are at work they won't be able to get to their guns too fast.

I can find countless 420rd ammo-cans of Lake City M855 at gun stores, even in Kalifornia.. That's the steel-core 5.56 "penetrator" round issued to the US military, made by the US Army's very own Lake City Ammunition Plant. Its great stuff!

@nutliac A sniper actually isn't a bad idea if you come across zombies in very small groups. It means you don't have to go closer to them to kill them. That could walk you straight into a horde of zombies for which you don't have enough ammo. But you're right. Sniper's aren't a very good first choice of weapon, it's better as a backup weapon.

The weapons in my house that I would choose is defineatly my AR-15 with scope, silencer, and bayonet with the silencer off the other weapon is my old school wood baseball batt because if push comes to shove I could drive some nails in it to make it a mace.
In my Wooden box with shoulderstraps (that I made) I have extra arrows, about 15 knives and a disassembled blow gun.... Im good, no need for ammo or guns

First and foremost, forget about melee weapons. those are last resort weapons. You do not want a zombie getting even remotely close to you. Think about it... They're infected. you don't want saliva and blood and shit getting all over you. You want to be able to perch yourself high up above somewhere far away in groups with lots of ammo and supplies so you can steadily pick them off. Also, a good strategy would be to go out to sea with a barge of supplies fishing rigs and wait it out.
I believe a rage virus zombie apocalypse scenario like in 28 days later is the most likely. In this case I say some sort of automatic poison dart gun, or tranquilizer gun would be handy, because the zombie is still a functioning organism. Therefore, the stun serum may still have a sufficient inhibitory effect on the nervous system. In a similar vein, one might employ nerve gas grenades on large hordes of zombies. acctally, i jst thought of my rock bars, hahaha, ok that over the maul, has range and is bound to do massive dammage, plus i mess around with it all the time so i'm confident i can swing and it with it well.
I see what he means by loosing ballance with a sledge, I know i would, haha, but a bigger guy would be able to do it no prob, and there are also smaller heads than the standard. for example, I have a few 2 pound one handed sledges in my garage and cold easily fit the heads onto a metal bar or pipe, reenforcing the pipe of course. So ya, i digress, haha, I would use a pry bar as my sidearm, and a splitting maul as my main cqc weapon, and my tiny 22, hahaha, not a bad utility gun actually.
For a melee weapon I would want something blunt, that won't break or require lots of maintenance like a lead pipe, crowbar, something to that effect. For a gun I would want a submachine gun for lightweight fully automatic fire, but to be honest I don't know where I would find one so a handgun would have to do.
well if a zombie apocalypse was to happen right now I would use my Taurus Pt-22 and my Marlin 795. I got lots of ammo for them both and extra magazines for them as well

@jedidraco89 Ideally when going on a mission eg recovery, supplies etc, in my opinion I think you need atleast 4 skilled people per team, 1 leader - leading the group with mid-long range rifle/crossbow, 1 communicator carrying RT equipment - carrying a riot shield and a malee weapon, 1 executioner carrying a sledge/heavy axe (he puts the secondary & final blow to assure the dead stay dead) & last 1 watchdog - carrying a riot shield and a hand pistol. (he keeps an eye on the backs of his crew)
@Jamac007 a mid to long rang gun should be everyone's in the teams main weapon, then a sidearm as a back up and then a large fix blade knife, depending on a persons job on the team, they will be carrying something different(s crowbar, shotgun, medical supplies), a riot shield is harder to come by than a gun so that would probably be a no go. relying a melee is just to caress, it WILL get people in your crew killed, there is just no way around it.
@jedidraco89 your theory is ok if EVERYONE has the skills & required equipment with enough ammo to go around, I was speaking interms of bare MINIMUM per mission/raid, i also said before you need atleast 4 personal min, ideally you want 6 no more no less. just like military armor/apparel which survivors need also you can buy riot shields (little or no restrictions when buying) online its alot easier than people think, they come in different shapes and sizes, when used well they are useful.
@Jamac007 guns are every where, weather they are legal or not you can find one faster than a shield. also they require the same (if not more) amount of training a firearm does if you want to use it effectively. and my theory works if you actually make sure you have the items on hand before shit goes down. your going to think its impossible but its not, people do it every day, not just for zombies but for nature disasters, government break down, or just a short term power outage. they are ready
@jedidraco89 guns are everywhere where you come from, not so the case here, most countries have tighter controls on firearms, the people i live around with are less likely to have a firearm but in saying that it wouldn't be hard to find one every police station here have a armor and firearms confinement in each police compound as well as hunting and fishing shops.

If you get a plastic yard stick (or meter) cut grooves on both sides tie some STRONG nylon it can be used as a bow and it actually WORKS. EASILY found and get an aluminum arrow break off the end, fill it with black powder, glue a shotgun primer to the end of that, then tape a metal bb on top of the shotgun primer the arrow explodes XD

Every one listen up! Bladed weapons dull, guns need ammo and oil, and the main danger is not zombies, it's SURVIVING WITHOUT SOCIETY! You can't just go to the store and buy some more food and within a year or two almost if not all of the food will be gone. Learn some basic wilderness survival before you even think about hacking up some zombies.

i khow this is mele weapons, but can i just say i like the crossbow, since its more powerful and accurate than a bow, and a good hit will go penetrate the skull and get stuck in the brain, so when the zombie is really dead, you can go and take out the crossbow bolt and use it again, plus its a silent killer, which stealth will be important in the lands ruled by the dead.

Honeslty, why not just get a cheap $75-100 Mosin Nagant 91/30? The 7.62x54r round it fires can take down anything on the North American continent, and with an included bayonet, it doubles as a 5 1/2ft spear. Even if it stops shooting (which is doubtful), it can be used as a huge wooden club, a boat oar, or just firewood.. Plus, that old surplus Soviet or Romanian ammo is pretty cheap..

Weapons I'd use from around my house are, 1 a power-hitter metal baseball bat, idk what you're talking about cuz I've smashed this thing against cinder blocks and tree trunks as hard as I can and only minor minor knicks in the paint were noticed. 2, parts of cymbal stands from a drum kit, not many people know this but those stands are made of some really sturdy metal and can be adjusted so they are very adaptable. 3, a big spanish-made buck knife with a razor-sharp one edged blade.

But almost all farmers have shotguns and I know a lot of people who have ww2 military grade high-caliber rifles. It's not rare and ammo isn't super rare if you don't waste multiple rounds on each zombie.

@GeneralDomination What's your definition of a high powered weapon? 5.56? 7.62x39? .308? 6.8? .338 Lapua? .50BMG? 12ga? Semi automatic AR15's and AK47's (and Chinese, Bulgarian, or Romanian AK variants) are two of the most common rifles in the shooting community. Police/military-spec Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 shotguns are quite common choices for home defense too. Hunting rifles are largely chambered in .308, even the ones you find in Wally World.
They're a lot more common than you think...

The 7.62 may be common among the gun enthusiast community but if you go somewhere like Canada where guns are much harder to come by you may find 7.62, 6.8 and 5.56 rounds hard to come by, especially after most have been used up by survivors. And when I say high-powered I mean the kind of stuff the army uses.

@GeneralDomination The problem with shotgun shells: most are simply low-brass birdshot or target rounds for trap/skeet, especially in Canada. That is nothing close to full-power 00 buckshot or 1oz slugs. Yes, its better than nothing, but is FAR from ideal. Birdshot is for birds. Buckshot can stop angry bears..
The standard issue rounds for the US military are variants of the 5.56 NATO round and the .223/5.56 rounds are the most common rifle calibers in the US, not counting the .22lr.

@Cosmo1093 Birdshot might not be capable of taking down bears but I've seen a bear get hit with two slugs and keep going (mind you the third one did it). Birdshot has enough power to penetrate the human skull at up to 10 feet. And buckshot is actually the most common varient of shotgun ammo. And the 5.56 NATO round is very common around military bases. Alas there are few bases with low supplies in Canada and I'm pretty sure the army would burn through the ammo before you get it.

At 10 ft, you're better off with a Katana or baseball bat or something -- something that doesn't make an unnecessarily loud bang to kill something at a mere 10 ft. With slugs, its all about shot placement. One to a bear's head is lethal.
Going to Canada and searching for ammo is almost like a bad joke to begin with....up there, you're better off just finding a secluded cabin.

And if you think surviving a zombie outbreak in the states is easier than in canada you're sadly mistaken. The population density in the states and the long canadian winters are two reasons why you should go north first thing. And a secluded cabin won't have enough supplies to last the winter.

Likewise, living in the backcountry of the US, away from cities (or in Alaska) also means less people/zombies. And 20 ft still isn't a lot, especially with a hunting shotgun with a 4 round capacity at most. The max effective range of buckshot is 120-150ft. It can still be lethal past 300ft, but is just very inaccurate.

"High-powered" weapons are relatively common, and most owners are fairly decent shooters. Even if the US has a higher population density, how many zombies will there really be after everyone is done shooting? That's not something you can really predict.

If it's highly infectious they could infect easy 1000 people and how many people would they infect? It snowballs fast and the faster it spreads the less shooters you have for your many guns. And if it happens while people are at work they won't be able to get to their guns too fast.

I can find countless 420rd ammo-cans of Lake City M855 at gun stores, even in Kalifornia.. That's the steel-core 5.56 "penetrator" round issued to the US military, made by the US Army's very own Lake City Ammunition Plant. Its great stuff!

@nutliac A sniper actually isn't a bad idea if you come across zombies in very small groups. It means you don't have to go closer to them to kill them. That could walk you straight into a horde of zombies for which you don't have enough ammo. But you're right. Sniper's aren't a very good first choice of weapon, it's better as a backup weapon.

First and foremost, forget about melee weapons. those are last resort weapons. You do not want a zombie getting even remotely close to you. Think about it... They're infected. you don't want saliva and blood and shit getting all over you. You want to be able to perch yourself high up above somewhere far away in groups with lots of ammo and supplies so you can steadily pick them off. Also, a good strategy would be to go out to sea with a barge of supplies fishing rigs and wait it out.

I believe a rage virus zombie apocalypse scenario like in 28 days later is the most likely. In this case I say some sort of automatic poison dart gun, or tranquilizer gun would be handy, because the zombie is still a functioning organism. Therefore, the stun serum may still have a sufficient inhibitory effect on the nervous system. In a similar vein, one might employ nerve gas grenades on large hordes of zombies. For a melee weapon I would want something blunt, that won't break or require lots of maintenance like a lead pipe, crowbar, something to that effect. For a gun I would want a submachine gun for lightweight fully automatic fire, but to be honest I don't know where I would find one so a handgun would have to do.

@Jamac007 no there wont be power to use the internet, that's why you get ready now and learn to do it BEFORE shit hits the fan. i agree with my gun breaking breaking down while taking on undead, that's when i would switch my melee weapon, or sidearm, but going out without a gun is like a drummer playing with one hand tied behind his back, ya he MAY be able to pull it off, but it would be a way better solo with both hands, my point on a gun is even with all its draw backs, its to good not to have

@jedidraco89 Ideally when going on a mission eg recovery, supplies etc, in my opinion I think you need atleast 4 skilled people per team, 1 leader - leading the group with mid-long range rifle/crossbow, 1 communicator carrying RT equipment - carrying a riot shield and a malee weapon, 1 executioner carrying a sledge/heavy axe (he puts the secondary & final blow to assure the dead stay dead) & last 1 watchdog - carrying a riot shield and a hand pistol. (he keeps an eye on the backs of his crew)

@Jamac007 a mid to long rang gun should be everyone's in the teams main weapon, then a sidearm as a back up and then a large fix blade knife, depending on a persons job on the team, they will be carrying something different(s crowbar, shotgun, medical supplies), a riot shield is harder to come by than a gun so that would probably be a no go. relying a melee is just to caress, it WILL get people in your crew killed, there is just no way around it.

@jedidraco89 your theory is ok if EVERYONE has the skills & required equipment with enough ammo to go around, I was speaking interms of bare MINIMUM per mission/raid, i also said before you need atleast 4 personal min, ideally you want 6 no more no less. just like military armor/apparel which survivors need also you can buy riot shields (little or no restrictions when buying) online its alot easier than people think, they come in different shapes and sizes, when used well they are useful.

@Jamac007 guns are every where, weather they are legal or not you can find one faster than a shield. also they require the same (if not more) amount of training a firearm does if you want to use it effectively. and my theory works if you actually make sure you have the items on hand before shit goes down. your going to think its impossible but its not, people do it every day, not just for zombies but for nature disasters, government break down, or just a short term power outage. they are ready

@jedidraco89 guns are everywhere where you come from, not so the case here, most countries have tighter controls on firearms, the people i live around with are less likely to have a firearm but in saying that it wouldn't be hard to find one every police station here have a armor and firearms confinement in each police compound as well as hunting and fishing shops.

If you get a plastic yard stick (or meter) cut grooves on both sides tie some STRONG nylon it can be used as a bow and it actually WORKS. EASILY found and get an aluminum arrow break off the end, fill it with black powder, glue a shotgun primer to the end of that, then tape a metal bb on top of the shotgun primer the arrow explodes XD

good selection but why not just go into the kitchen and grab a knife i personaly know that the serated knives are stronger than the non and a flamthrower is a lighter and hairspray other than that if you live were i do a tool box is always near so the screwdriver hammer are easy enough to just reach over and grab one as for other stuff why not just wear protection for your arms i mean range doesnt matter if they cant bite through were they grab,and yes i prefer close combat

Every one listen up! Bladed weapons dull, guns need ammo and oil, and the main danger is not zombies, it's SURVIVING WITHOUT SOCIETY! You can't just go to the store and buy some more food and within a year or two almost if not all of the food will be gone. Learn some basic wilderness survival before you even think about hacking up some zombies.

The machete may be able to cut well, but is it good for delivering adequate brain damage?
The best melee weapon is one that can crush the brain easily without being too heavy/causing too much stress to the hands from hit feedback.

i khow this is mele weapons, but can i just say i like the crossbow, since its more powerful and accurate than a bow, and a good hit will go penetrate the skull and get stuck in the brain, so when the zombie is really dead, you can go and take out the crossbow bolt and use it again, plus its a silent killer, which stealth will be important in the lands ruled by the dead.
