  • Can't believe I was 14 when I first heard this. Seems like it was only yesterday.

  • Just a great song.Loved it since I first heard it on WNEW in NY(Roscoe on the Radio). I was 16.Now 59. The years, they hurry so. I remember that the beautiful, poignant lyrics were more than you usually get in a pop song, but did not think that they would apply to me, also. Happy little ditty......but, wow, how powerful and achingly insightful are those lyrics! Let none of us waste or squander any more time.

  • My parents were in a folk band called Southwind that did some stuff around the Boston area in the very early 1980s. I found the master reel-to-reel tape of all eight songs they recorded, and a cover of this is on there. Anyone like me to upload this?

  • I remember on sunday mornings when I was a kid, my local PBS used to air a show called Market To Market (which used this as their theme song) before they aired all the kids' shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and the Electric Company. I've been curious about this song ever since.

  • I'll be 64 soon...lots of us on here. We remember the good music, don't we? Is there much music out there today that will be remembered when the young people of today are 64?

  • Will be 64 and loved this 1st time I heard it. Pretty much as described here by the uploader. Thanks. You have good taste.

  • I am almost 60 and I can remember when I first heard this song. Has been with me for all of those years. Just try and keep your foot still. Probably my all thime favorite song.

  • Excellent photo montage !! Bravo !!

  • Fabulous song. I've always loved it.

  • So true. "Gravestones cheer the living dear; they're no use to the dead."

  • I forgot all about this song until a few minutes ago when I heard it on Sirius Radio

  • This was one of the saddest songs I ever heard.

  • Buy for me this album.

  • 1:23 can surely buy me a drink.......and likely more!!!........in 1967 that is!!

  • I just happened across this one. I bought it immediately. Thanks.

  • Some songs you hear in life never leave you, first heard this beautiful song in sixth grade and all these years later it still makes its way into my thoughts, never forgot a note or word. Takes me back to my own "Wonder Years". The years all hurry so.

  • Thanks for posting this great song, which I have on a 45, but it sounds much better in stereo.

  • I first heard this song in the mid 1990s on an oldies station. It has never left me since..What a tune!

  • Big fan of the NGDB. These guys have put on great shows throughout the

    years. Sweet memories.

  • Rocker53zero,thanks for sending this one.I never heard it before but love it! XX ♥

  • this is a great song of early Spring of 1967 ? .......and their first I think?

  • Hard to believe that, until this afternoon when Sirius XM played this old classic, I had totally forgotten about it. What a shame that beauties like this aren't played on the radio anymore.

  • I just heard this song on SIRIUS/XM radio a while ago. I had to find it just to listen to it again! :)

  • i love you for putting this all on !

  • This song was recorded in 1964 and thus began my almost fifty year admiration of this band.

  • I love this song and I have a question off topic but related to the late 60s. Does anyone who knows of a song released in 1969 that might be called 'You can all get some' ?

  • @Khultan You may be thinking about Come and Get It by Badfinger. It came out in late '69 early '70.

  • @winscott9601 No, no, it's definitely not them. It's, damn, I'm having an Al Bundy moment right now, what's worse, I can't freakin' hum this via text. : (

  • Almost reminds me of the Byrds.

  • I love folk rock

  • this is so cool

  • keaster, it's a different Peter than that. He's a song writer...not the Monkee guy. (Not sure what the Monkees could write? LOL)

  • You're right. The Herman's Hermits guy was named Peter Noone. And you're right about the Monkees, they didn't play any of their music, it was Boyce & Hart. No wonder they sounded so bad in concert! All they did was the singing on their albums. And just a band made up from auditions to try and compete with the Beatles. As if!

  • They didn't write any of their songs! LOL!

  • Another feel good song from the 60's. I love the video and great pics.I picked this song to be played at my funeral. I remember when they appeared on Laugh-In! Those were the days!

  • Search...as this is by Pete Noonan....It's older than you think. It's 1967 and Jackson singing with Pete...but that doesn't even do justice to he says.

  • @caddyshackman You're kidding! Peter from Herman's Hermits sang on this song? I didn't see him in the video or from Laugh-In. They used to show the old Laugh-In show on a station called Trio. Whatever happened to that channel? They had alot of good shows.

  • I love everything the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band does. I met them during a period when they just called themselves The Dirt Band. I have their autographs on the album titled "The Dirt Band," which was popular then, circa 1978.

  • this song has been stuck in my head since i was18--m now 61--it just wont leave

  • @megajameskelly: Mega-dittos!!.......1967-HS Grad, USMMS, BC.........2010-36th Anniv; Daughter is ER MD; no sick days for from work for 39 years; Unemployment.

  • @megajameskelly I had the same experience, and I'm 61. In fact....I forgot the name and never could find this song until the advent of Google....and finally was able to enter a few lines of the song, and the title popped up. Bought the album. But I could never get the tune out of my head and figured I'd die frustrated until I managed to find it.

  • my dad handed down this tape when i was a kid, i grew up on this tape an ran it till it broke. so many memories.

  • I'm younger than all of you but I'm already aging as I discover this beautiful song now, through Youtube. : (

  • Yeah - it's great to be old.

  • The song was written by Steven Noonan, he's still out there writing and singing. Google it.

  • who wrote this song?....I saw something that said Mike Nesmith from the monkees...is that true?

  • From IPTV's Market To Market

  • I love this song, from the moment I heard it on WLS radio station in Chicago. Perfect song to listen to in your fifties, as I am. iTunes doesn't have this version. Thanks for posting it.

  • Yes! WLS! I collected their "Silver Dollar Surveys" and still have some ranging from 1963-1972.

I first heard this on WLS, just like you.

  • Cool that you still have some of the "Silver Dollar Surveys". I gotta find an album with this song on it. :)

  • I've been looking for this song also. I have the old 45, but it's not in the best of shape.

You can search for WLS in You Tube and find some videos of its past. It didn't start as a top 40 station. I haven't listened to it for awhile, but due to today's top 40 music I might not be missing much.

  • @6motion6 - I, too, first heard this on WLS in January 1967..it debuted along with The Eggplant That Ate Chicago by Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Bank.....my favorite program in those days was Sunday night's Hey Baby, They're Playing Our Song, which cultivated my love of Oldies!

  • This remastering of the song sounds gorgeous. I can't ever remember hearing this song without a wall of distortion on the intsturmental tracks. I think the NGDB's first album was a "mono only" release which many bands did back then.

  • My first time hearing this...I totally agree with your intro comments, 74 soda pop. I was only 4 or 5 when this came out and I missed some of this great country-folk music that came out... the Young Bloods "Love One Another Right Now" is what I think of....

  • Beautiful video - thanks for posting.

  • I love the NGDB, but I'll always remember listening to this as the theme to "Market to Market" on PBS as a kid when I was waiting for Doctor Who to come on...

  • Anyone know if Chris Darrow was on this recording?

  • @wildhorsestudios1421 Darrow came along a couple of years after this.

  • Thanks Casey. I know he's on a Linda Rondstadt album I used to have but can't remember which one.

  • This one is good, but I think "Some of Shelley's Blues" is better. I understand that there is a copyright thing with it though and that's why you can't find it here by NGDB. You can find it by the songwriter, however ( Michael Nesmith ). If he can do something about that, it would be most appreciated, I am sure.

Thanx for putting this one up, 74 pop.....

  • Best song they ever did. Thanks for putting it out there for us.

  • Thanks for posting this song. It came out when I was 13, but don't think I ever heard it then - only heard it a handful of times as an oldie in the mid 1970's. Makes me feel young again. There is magic in music.

  • I have always loved this song. beautiful melody and instrumentation. There is that commercial on TV for a prescription drug that always reminds me of this song.

  • It's a deeply moving, unforgettable song--lyrics in the last chorus too morbid, though.

  • Would you believe that, 13 years before MTV, they did a video of this for Laugh In? It's true

  • I saw it.With soldiers shooting each other? My little video I'm sorry to say tops that. Not that lovely song though.

  • yes, thats right they did; that's when I first heard this song. It was on the re-runs of Laugh In.

  • Two other bands who had films aired on Laugh-In were The Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Bee Gees (way back when Vince and Colin were in the band). Too bad they didn't continue with this feature later on.

  • I used to watch the re-runs of Laugh In all the time, but I don't think I ever saw those bands on there. I guess I missed those.

  • It's posted on AOL video, but not very good quality.

  • @RoyFive I have that episode on tape! In fact, I have the entire 1st season on tape!

  • 5 stars and a fave! I would never have remembered this one or who did it if I heard it.

This is so evocative of that time, and the part harmony and strings are exceptional. I'm surprised this didn't make your top 7, but hey!, many thanks!

  • Check out "A Number and a Name" from "Rare Junk", it's exceptional!

  • I love this song! All so true. Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for posting this..it still sounds as good as it did 41 years ago..the years all hurry so..

  • Beautiful song. Wonderful string arrangement.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Not only the string arrangement, but the harmonies! The lyrics are magical and evoke for me walking outside on a beautiful spring day with someone I love.

  • I am so glad that I found this song. Its one of the best. I agree that this is a wonderful group that doesn't always get its due.

  • This has always been one of my favorites. Thanks!

  • magical
