  • Vermiculite can be perfectly safe. The problem was where it was sourced from, asbestos was a contaminate particulary from the Libbey mine. In certain applications it is still used as insulation today beause it is fire resistant. Glad to hear yours was good to go. I'd check the wiring out of the junction box though, I'd think there should be a cover on there.

  • @yrly59e Your totally right! Oh and the first thing we did after closing on buying the house is replace all of the out dated wiring and make everything up to code including covering all the open boxes (there were several). With a new baby in a new house one can't be too careful! thanks though!

  • It is called vermiculite. I sent a sample to a lab for testing and it came back -0.01 which means there is no asbestos. the test cost me $50 but that was $50 well spent in my opinion just for the peace of mind.
