Andy reminds me of me . no i haven't been to prison ever... but I have felt very much"imprisoned" by my circumstances. 30 years old, educated, no car , and no way to get a decen job where i live to take care of myself well, there just isn't any public transportation to speak of in kc. i depend on people to get me around and can only take jobs they are willing to transport me to.
I can't understand people's opinion concerning school and likening it to prison. Beyond the compulsory years till you are sixteen school is a choice. you choose whether or not to continue school or quit. You can't decide whether or nor you stay in prison or not. In school you are working towards a measurable goal. In prison you are putting in time. And I am not aware of any "coed" prisons. But, to each his or her own.

@EncycIopedia Some sites (like imdb) replace all swearing in posts with *BEEP* and I'm pretty sure YouTube bleeps out all/most of the swearing in its videos...
@mrwtsfhc I could watch this movie once a DAY for the rest of my life!! I will never get tired of it. I have seen many good movies in my life. This is my all time FAVORITE!!
Something about prison brings out the unvarnished truth... the starkness of prison perhaps illuminates truth to men. And they often learn more in prison than they did anywhere else. e.g.. .See Malcolm X...
I LOVE this movie and this scene so much meaning to it and so many life lessons....ps I disliked it just so more people could contradict what they have to say about living life by ranting on and on about some stupid dislike feature to a great lesson in life, I mean come on focus on what's important with this clip!
I find it funny how everyone in the comments say "It's such a great movie" with "a he'll of a lot of insight on about human nature". Sure, the movies good. Good acting, music, cinematography. But what everyone in the comments are praising the movie for is the story, and not one of them know that the story was written by Stephen King. Praise him, not the movie.
yeah-but he didn't write the script-and the story does not have the same dialog. A lot of the people who like the movie might not even like the story if they read it.
its like the Universal Monster movies of the 30's, which were so different from the books they were based or the James Bond films. The sarcasm of Bond is not even present in the books. The funny thing is, Steven King books are usually better than his movies. This is a rare example where the movie improves upon his story
One of the best movies in movie history. That people can create something so profound and true always makes me happy. It has a hell of a lot of insight about human nature, is perfectly written, acted and directed.
@Thuglife1000 it wasn't very big at all when it first came out. It has grown slowly but theres never really been a time for it to win anything. But it is definitely considered one of the best movies ever now.
Why do everyone love this movie? It sucks, so boring, get busy living or Get busy dying? Wtf, how cares? This movie is a bad verson of the "escape from alcatraz"
My GCSE Mentor made me watch this film to show me what determination to succeed can achieve. Didn't take the message in at the time but I do love the film =]
I love the fact that this movie has made the impact it has out of the box office. The only issue I have with this video is the fact that you left out the most beautiful part of the scene, if you cut 10 seconds later you can see Andy step literally out of the shadow of the prison into the sunlight. All in all a great scene! thanks for posting
the stupid warrden made two accounts to dislike this .. he was going to make as many accounts as there where people in the prison but when the public found out they called the cops and as they came to arrest him and kill him he shot himself so dont make accouunts just to dislike videos or youll end up like the warrden :D

This movie should have won best picture, and every other category it was nominated in. Sure, Forrest Gump was a great movie, but Shawshank redemption did over power Forrest Gump in a lot of aspects.
"For the second time in my life, im guilty of committing a crime.. a role violation."
Swaping roles is key to solitude and Im glad that even a convict can break loose like Red did. Please people! Tsotsi is another movie you´ll love. Slightly rough, but it´ll wet your eyes in the end. ;)
I see 1 person here who thought this was a gay prison movie. Sorry your fantasies couldn't come true, buddy, but don't thumbs down the scene just because it lacks a shower scene!
Some people are missing the point of the movie,Its about the prisoners life in Jail and how they get so accustomed inside that they can't live outside even if they want to,Its about how they live their life in the inside regretting what they did but know they would like to have one more chance to rectify it but they can't and have to live in the inside, they have no option,The acting is pure class...The prison break is not the point of this movie.
@TheRooster94 ... you do know this is was made in 1994 right... where movies like Predator, Commando, Rambo, etc etc were made a decade before. This is just a great narrative that still happens today, although not to this caliber

This is my favorite movie of all time for every reason that you suggested. I have held on to that quote for many years and it is so true and inspirational. It really makes you look in the mirror and ask yourself what you want to do. Get Busy Livin...or Get Busy Dyin.
Sometimes, when i am watching the tv or i am doing this kind of unmeaning thing, i am thinking about my past purpouses, and i am very sad...I"ve gave up, my hopes, my dreams, i didnt fight enaugh, and now i am a sad, lonely person. I am always trying to do like Andy, never give up, i am able to the changing, and reach my goals.

To me, school is like my Shawshank prison. In school, I'm an important man, an educated man. Outside, I'm nothin'.
These school walls are funny. First you hate them, then you get used to them. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them.

This is my favorite movie of all time for every reason that you suggested. I have held on to that quote for many years and it is so true and inspirational. It really makes you look in the mirror and ask yourself what you want to do. Get Busy Livin...or Get Busy Dyin.

"Get busy living, or get busy dying"..
Such a powerful sentence and it's can be used as an example of everyday life..

"Get busy living or get busy dying." I thought that was a Morgan Freeman motto.
