It is not a lie that communists had infiltrated the United States, but the problem with Joseph McCarthy was his methods. His black-and-white view on communism (you were either for us or against us) caused the false imprisonment and misery of hundreds of innocent American citizens.
According to McCarthy, people were either supporters of the communist ideal or against communism. It never occurred to him that there were people who either had no proper stance on communism, unknowingly gave support to communism, or had brief contact with the communist party but nothing else.
Innocent people who were accused of being communists refused to give away the names of their own friends, and because of this they were screwed either way.
At least McCarthy had the courage to expose the infiltration of our government by the commies. That is something that no one in Washington, or the media has the guts to do today. This book - as do other recently written to correct the record - relies on recently declassified documents from Congress, the FBI, the State Department and other federal agencies, as well as the archives of the former Soviet Union to show that most if not all of those he accused of working for the Soviets actually were doing just that.
Do a little research like Evans did.

There weren't any witches and those people were unjustly persecuted. The US govt and its agencies were choc full of Soviet agents and fellow travelers. This is not "opinion", but fact, established in govt documents and from Soviet intelligence sources The 2 situations were quite different. People have been misled about this for 60 years.
