CCW 3.71: LAST RANTS - WONDER WOMAN'S NEW COSTUME...WHY ALL THE HATE?

The Greg Rucka block (#195-#226) is one of my favorite runs of all time. I think I don't love the new costume for all the wrong reasons. I worry that DC is just trying to get a leg-up on the designs they've seen from the production art of the eventual movie. They want to be covered once the film comes out and prove that they "got there first." I could be wrong, and therefore my ignorance wins for no reason, which is bad. I still look forward to JMS' run, but the costume still kinda bugs me.

People that were complainning before about artist's making it look like she's wearing a thong, or they just want to show her as eye candy with ass shots with her hotpant's riding up her ass can now be pleased. She's no longerr wearing hotpants, or what look's like women's underwear but what is either tights, or leggings.

I was in Chicago for the Cubs Pihillies series stayed at the Hilton. When I went to the pool I talked to a guy about how Wonder Woman's outfit is women's underwear the old one that is Also about a super hero movie I am writing. Hotpants is what her star spangled shorts were called but they look more briefs or some other kind women's underwear. Her top is a corset. Can't believe no one in DC has mocked her about her outfit.

I have always liked Wonder Woman. I have all the archives. I enjoyed the reboot in the 80's.

I HATED the reboot after Something crisis a few years ago. The delays were bullshit and hurt the story. I dropped the series after Gail's first arc. I just didn't care for it.

I picked up issue 600 and I really enjoyed the book and I am going to picked the series on my pull list for awhile.

I'm a bit more opened minded about this.

JMS got the same heat from fanboys when he started writing Spider-man... and he cranked out AWESOME stories before being screwed by Marvel

Now he tries something new at DC and it happens again...

I for one bought Superman & Wonder Woman and am excited for the change of pace he's bringing

I think they have tried several times to show what WW is about. After she killed Maxwell Lord, she operated as a metahuman agent out of costume. They had Artemis take over for awhile also. Calm down and enjoy the story. Few things stick in comics, Electric Superman ( I hated that arc ) I do think she deserves a new costume, something more "warrior-esk" less " victoria secret-esk" as the wifey says. She's like Coke. Nobody drank it. They changed the formula, then they wanted Coke Classic back.

I dislike the design, but pretty much agree with you - it's mostly inoffensive aside from the choker and the jacket, but they are a part of the design... Rucka must be pissed they wouldn't let him tweak the design and then they go and do this!

I still want to read a take on Wonder Woman that I love, but I seriously doubt this will be it. Hopefully Darwyn Cooke gets around to doing a New Frontier WW spinoff sometime.

I dont think they should have changed the costume.

Batman 700. Batmans suit wasnt changed.

Superman 700 his costume looks the same.

So why did they have 2 change WW's costume? Its looks ridiculous.

at the end of the day its a comic book character that no one should get this worked up about it

and its not like they have the character carrying around a credit card or some type of shark repealant

...huge Crossover mandate. JMS likes to change things, we all know this, but are they always for the better. Jose is right, Superman 700 sucked, and to me so does the start of the new WW, but I'm still going to read before I make my decision. Judging the whole weighs more than picking at each part before somethings even complete. I guess what I want say is, JMS always makes things interesting, but his ending leave me frustrated, and regretful of having read along. I fear this will happen in DC.

I for one like the costume change, but my fear and skepticism lies in JMS himself, not the book. DC likes to recton everything when there's a writer change, it's what they do and I'm used to it, but what I'm not used to, and never will be is the endgame portion of JMS's runs. Spidey started of phenomenal, and then we got Gwen infidelity, Spider Totem, and OMD. Thor we got characterization and a return of a presence of heroism the Marel U really needed. This was ruined by Bendicks and Joey Q's,,,

I would like to say that personally when i saw the new outfit I said "aww no, that looks cheesy". (also i am a long time subscriber). Am I against change? No. Point in fact i LOVED her short term look after she blinded herself fighting Medusa where she wore the blindfold. If Daredevil didn't already have it cornered i wish that had been permanent! I loved new Thor's look. I just don't like the jacket and the 90's look. But hey when i read my new issues maybe I will "get" it? Ill give it a try!

personally whenever i hear JMS all i think of is good things im just surprised how one picture can make people forget what an amazing writer he is and because of this i might start picking up wonder woman even though she isnt a character i am that interested in.

I was under the impression that JMS was trying to jump and reboot everything.

But now that I know it's not permanent, it reminds me of the Superman/Batman: Vengeance storyline. Great point about "taking the Diana they know away."

I remember how I went out and bought my grandma "Gods and Mortals" because she was a fan of the character in her childhood, disliking it after all the Greek god worship... hA!

I'm really excited about JMS' run on WW. Just reading his small story in WW 600 I saw the potential for him to have an incredible run and make changes with her character much like the changes he did with Spider-Man. I'm definitely onboard with his WW run so far.

the first thing i told myself when the change happend wuz this is gonna pist alot of people....i got info on the costume and what jms i gonna do wit this and i read it wuz just gonna be for his run so i waz like ok with it i chose this issue to start buying it so im ok with it i mean ppl know who she is but ppl dnt know who she really is character wise....btw it got me 2 buy the book...now if he could only bring back superboys jacket and hair..lol...ps i would luv to c a powergirl ww mini...

JMS' name alone is selling the book to me. I've read some of her trades but have never bought the monthly before. I approve of the costume.

everyone knows that superheroes never stay with a new costume, or very rarely they go through long-term temporary cosmetic changes, (like Aqua-man) I really dont see why fans have a problem with the new costume...I mean DC was very shrewd if you ask me bc like Jose pointed out, EVERYONE is talking about Wonderwoman, and some new readers are getting into the book based on some of the comments Ive seen.

I agree with you guys 100%. I'm really interested in wonder woman again. My favorite version of wonder woman is from the JLA cartoon. I want to hear from a woman’s opinion about the new costume. I have no problem with Wonder Woman wearing pants. She still looks beautiful. I saw a Photoshop version of the new costume without the jacket and it looks awesome.

Elliot's point is that the the rights to the character, as a legally owned DC property,needs to only appear occasionally to maintain copyrights. Jose's point is valid that to maintain the character as a presence in public consciousness, she must appear more frequently. Of course she is a cultural icon despite what contrarian comics nerds may say. Her basic look can't be changed long term, but a short term change like this is no big woop. Hell,this is the first I've even heard of this hoopla.

The cosmetic changes to WW...hell when you change anyone's costume "Blue and REd Superman anyone? You're going to be met with crits.

Call me crazy, but I really hope we're in for a..."platinum age" where we might see some changes to some of the characters. Namely and only speaking personally; one of DC's poster boys Superman. The "one more day" storyline should have never happened to Spider-Man...but Superman!

I Digress. Cause I'm running out of youtube reply characters to rant.

Hmm, do you guys remember in James Robison's Starman, the issue where he explores the life of Will Payton, and you realize how big of a hero he was and how we didn't appreciate a character because of costume or how popular or violent he was. This whole situation reminds of me how poignant the statment Robinson presented in that story, and how we haven't really learned that point.

I am jumping on to read Wonder Woman now. I saw the costume and right away was interested. I have never read the book before because I never got into the character. But it was the same way with Thor until JMS had his run and It was great.

and its just a costume, you now it wont last they never do. look at spider-man when he had the red and gold suit he didn't even have it for a year.

people need to be quiet and read something new that could be a lot of fun.

I don't hate WW's new costume. I just don't like the retcon. I mean what was wrong with her story thus far? I mean it isn't perfect, but what superhero story is? I just pray that this history retcon isn't final cause a lot of other parts of the DC universe is gonna be messed up.*cough* Donna Troy*. I don't have issue with the costume, just the random retcon.

@comicculturewarrior to be honest, I started with vol. 3 and I've been working back words. I didn't mean to come off critizing of the new direction, I was just looking for the reason for the direction. I just read the comics and watch ccw, so I have no idea about the online or news coverage. Like new things i'll get use to it. I'm just a little lost on the reason for the direction change.

@tringrad50 - I 100% agree with you. If you wanna play the whole "you gotta read WW to be mad" card, i have subscribed to WW for at least 5 years, and read it before that off and on for over a decade, i have action figures etc. (ask Jose to verify my subscription if you must!). I am also more irked at the retcon, and YES i was pissed at the stupid looking Zues costumes and male Amazon island story in the recent story, leave the Amazons and their iconic look alone! Still buying though!
