  • The 6 people who disliked this are jealous they don't look good in purple pants.

  • The perfect example of old doesn't need to mean dull

  • i love thier 'megamix' its awsume aha XD

  • I think if Gilbert and Sullivan had seen this version, they would have been throughly impressed.

  • I saw this live, I was four years old and it basically shaped my life.

  • I don´t like "modernizing" of classical music. But this is good.

  • A REMIX!!

  • Well that was fun. I enjoyed Pirates a lot more than their Mikado. I don't like the trio replacing the women's chorus - but it worked better in Pirates than in Mikado. The cast is outstanding though. Jon English is also much better as the Pirate King than as Poo-Bah. What role does he play in Pinafore? I would enjoy seeing that production if you have time to upload. Thanks for sharing. These productions are really fun.

  • No curtain call I've ever seen in my life is better than this one.

  • I found 'Cat Like Tread' on here about a year ago and thought it was absolutely fab. Now, after seeing this finale, I am convinced this has to be the best production of Pirates I have ever seen - and I saw all the Gt & S productions at the Savoy theatre in London by the D'Oyle Carte Co as a child. Even Cox and Box!!! Also, we did Pirates and The Mikado at school. It's a shame this production wasn't revived and brought to the West End in London. Can't someone talk to Cameron Mackintosh?

  • Brilliant !!!!!!!!

  • blasphemy - and that is not including the moronic audience clapping like so many schoolchildren

  • @vulpecula999 Oh come on - its called enjoying yourself!" I recently saw a G & S Operetta done in the style of the Blues Brothers - all black suits and sunglasses and it was brilliant. The original copyright has expired and a certain amount of artistic licence is OK. I rather enjoyed it (on TV) and purchased the DVD afterwards.

  • @vulpecula999 this is Curtain call ...... a great finish to a great performance .... I don't believe G&S would have any objection to people still enjoying their work.

  • @vulpecula999 this is a Curtain call ...... a great finish to a great performance .... I don't believe G&S would have any objection to people still enjoying their work.

  • @vulpecula999 How can you say 'blasphemy'??? G&S wrote them as comic operas, for people to enjoy and have a good time. When I have seen the D'Oyle Carte productions in London as a kid, lots of poeple were singing along and almost dancing in their seats!!

  • @vulpecula999 Chill out - you forget - G& S were unconventional themselves; I wonder how many called their operettas blasphemous...by the way, you were never a schoolchild?

  • I've never had more fun at a musical than the 25th anniversary production of Pirates. I was about 14. Jon and Simon absolutely killed it, my all time favourite musical!

  • Fantastic. They're great and this final is so ... , Ihave no words to decribe it. Muchísimas gracias.

  • Wowie.. their curtain call is amazing!

  • Wow I haven't seen this in such a long time. I have this on original VHS somewhere.

  • OHMYGOD yessss. what i would give to have been there.

  • We are not allowed to dance in the UK under the new Regime.

I am secretely dancing under the table.

  • What and epic finale!

  • The Pirate King is SUCH a spectacular character that he even has the first part of his chapter in the medley remix sung for him by the chorus, & gets to come onstage with two lovely assistants!

THAT'S how good Jon English's performance is!

  • The playlist is not in the correct order! Please tigrrr12 solve this!

  • brilliant

  • That is by far and a way and without a shadow of doubt... the most bizarre finale I have ever seen.

  • But the coolest :D

  • What a finale! I have seen Pirates many times and I have no objection at all to this wild treatment especially with such a perfect Mabel!

  • I so wish I got to see this performance live.Everyone seems to be having so much fun..fantastic show.

  • I saw this show live and to was SO worth it. (I was 13 when i saw it)

  • Love this! Too all the naysayers who have already commented: Ever heard of The Hot Mikado?

  • I have and I've seen it! :) I love that version of the show. This was brilliant as well.

  • Why can't all operas end this way?

    Utterly fabulous

  • If you're going to do a disco Pirates of Penzance I guess this is as good as it gets.... Everyone seems to be having fun at least.... whatever.

  • That. Was. EPIC. :0) Absolutely brilliant!!

  • well, I've never heard anyone call G&S gay before...

think of it this way...a straight man on broadway is in a very good position...because yes, the majority of men are broadway men, are gay...because, broadway consists almost entirely of dancers...not singers...

but since all the other guys are gay...he has little to no competition for all the women on broadway now does he?

  • Don't they have any respect for the original score and libretto?

  • If the audience enjoys this version more, why should they?

  • Considering all G&S 'operettas' were composed as "music hall' entertainments, lampooning political and social 'norms' in Britain at the time of their composing, I think G&S would support and enjoy this 'megamix.' They were musical comedies of the highest order, mocking the 'stiff' operas across town, not stuffed shirt operettas. Unfortunately, they have been Doyle-carted into the museum. It takes inventive thinking to put these museum pieces back into popular culture! Bravo on this medley!!!

  • @upstatepiano Eh, while I agree the Doyle Carte performances could sometimes use some life drummed into them, I don't buy into the argument that this is what G&S intended. Remember, Sullivan always wanted to be regarded as a serious composer.

  • This production looks like it was awesome!

  • I saw this when I was a little kid! ADORED Jon English, he just MADE the show. My Dad told me a little while ago that I loved the bit with the strobe lights so much I was bouncing in my chair, and that I wouldn't stop singing songs from it for a week XD This one was in Sydney in 1995, right? I would have been eight, then.

  • whats that song the 3 daughters are singing?

  • "Oh Dry the glistening tear".

  • usually its not that fast though

im in this play at my school and im a daughter so i have to sing it

  • ugh. The Major General should've gotten the last curtain call besides The Pirate King... He was absolutely crazy and epic

  • Ya he was great but the pirate king also was the director.

  • Hilarious, just watched it through, and I loved it!! :D I'll be watching this again! The energy they have at the end is just inspiring.

  • holy shit.. was it like this every single night?!

    lmao

  • This is like Lord Of The Dance meets FlashDance!

  • were doing this play but where not doing this awesome part

  • Wonderful, absolutely great. Even the Jon doesn't have the greatest voice, he was an AMAZING pirate king. Funniest I've ever seen. I love this production!

  • OH MY WORD, very different! What version is this meant to be?!?! haha

  • love it!

  • Best curtain call EVAR

  • bloody fantastic i so wanna be a pirate! where can i get this on dvd?

  • Wow. That was just amazing. I've sat here and watched the whole show from start to finish (its set up as a playlist). The show was great and the curtain call was just the icing on top. Thank you so much for posting all this. What a fantastic version.

(By the way, Ruth's 'pilot/pirate' number is missing from the playlist. Not a criticism - just letting you know).

  • lmao

  • I absolutely love Simon's voice.

  • it would be freaking impossible not to hes awesome

  • We are doing this version in March 2009,as far as i am aware we will be the 1st in Europe to do it,auditions are in October this year.

  • Thanks so much for sharing these clips. I think this is my favourite one!

I can't believe how fit the pirates and policemen are--after doing the full operetta they can come out and dance for the whole finale?!?! I wish the light were better so I could see their crazy dancing better.

(I think I'm in love with the fellow in the kilt)

    Thanks again!

  • Ugh! Jive Bunny does Gilbert and Sullivan!

  • i am mabel in my school play and i am so excited to be playing such a good part with a cute guy named cedric

  • I LOVE IT!!! OMG!!! That was the best ending ever!!!

  • Amen to that best curtain call in history

  • sorry, I doubt it... but you could inquire about it

  • ahhhh i'm so happy everytime i watch this finale :D

now that's what i call a curtain call!!!

  • Hurrah for the pirate king!

  • The best version i've ever seen and i've even been in the show a few times!!!

  • wow this was hilarious...best version EVER!

  • does anyone know what the singlettes are saying?

  • i think they're singing Oh Dry Thy Glistening Tear

  • Yeah they are, I can hear: "To see their father weep".

  • This is so awesome! Screw those who're too far up themselves to appreciate this!

  • Isn't that how some live operas or plays or something always end with a medley of some of the songs?

  • A little different than the original but very well done

  • oh do you now?????mememememe

  • What do you mean about that?

  • I own this one and the stage version with Linda Ronstadt as Mabel, Rex Smith as Frederic, Kevin Kline as the Pirate King

  • This is the best version of Pirates ever you will see - get the DVD!

  • i agree most enjoyable!

  • It's curtain call !!!!!! settle down

  • what on earth? funny- but very strange... were they trying to make musicals cooler or something?

  • This is great. Also loved the opening!

  • hahahahahaaa

  • AMAZING!!!! AWESOME

  • Sound repost this as Mega Mix :) 3 of my fav shows these

  • THAT WAS CRAZY! Man, I wish every musical production had a great curtain-call after-show thing like that. Can you imagine Phantom or Les Mis? Tee hee!

  • I ordered the DVD a few days ago. I"m glad I found this whenI did. I own the DVD with Kevin Kline and Rex Smith, but previewing this version I had to go and find the DVD. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Awesome! Glad you like it. There's also "The Mikado" and "HMS Pinafore" with (mostly) the same company. If I get more spare time I'll start uploading the Mikado. That one's my favourite of the 3.

  • Where can I get the DVD'S and are they working for the European region?

  • Try the ABC shop online. Don't know if they are available in other regions.. You can try to find them yourself or do what most of us down here do and get a multi-region player ;)

  • Thanks. I'll look into it.

  • brilliant
