Well that was fun. I enjoyed Pirates a lot more than their Mikado. I don't like the trio replacing the women's chorus - but it worked better in Pirates than in Mikado. The cast is outstanding though. Jon English is also much better as the Pirate King than as Poo-Bah. What role does he play in Pinafore? I would enjoy seeing that production if you have time to upload. Thanks for sharing. These productions are really fun.
I found 'Cat Like Tread' on here about a year ago and thought it was absolutely fab. Now, after seeing this finale, I am convinced this has to be the best production of Pirates I have ever seen - and I saw all the Gt & S productions at the Savoy theatre in London by the D'Oyle Carte Co as a child. Even Cox and Box!!! Also, we did Pirates and The Mikado at school. It's a shame this production wasn't revived and brought to the West End in London. Can't someone talk to Cameron Mackintosh?
@vulpecula999 Oh come on - its called enjoying yourself!" I recently saw a G & S Operetta done in the style of the Blues Brothers - all black suits and sunglasses and it was brilliant. The original copyright has expired and a certain amount of artistic licence is OK. I rather enjoyed it (on TV) and purchased the DVD afterwards.
@vulpecula999 this is Curtain call ...... a great finish to a great performance .... I don't believe G&S would have any objection to people still enjoying their work.
@vulpecula999 this is a Curtain call ...... a great finish to a great performance .... I don't believe G&S would have any objection to people still enjoying their work.
@vulpecula999 How can you say 'blasphemy'??? G&S wrote them as comic operas, for people to enjoy and have a good time. When I have seen the D'Oyle Carte productions in London as a kid, lots of poeple were singing along and almost dancing in their seats!!
@vulpecula999 Chill out - you forget - G& S were unconventional themselves; I wonder how many called their operettas blasphemous...by the way, you were never a schoolchild?
I've never had more fun at a musical than the 25th anniversary production of Pirates. I was about 14. Jon and Simon absolutely killed it, my all time favourite musical!
The Pirate King is SUCH a spectacular character that he even has the first part of his chapter in the medley remix sung for him by the chorus, & gets to come onstage with two lovely assistants!
well, I've never heard anyone call G&S gay before...
think of it this way...a straight man on broadway is in a very good position...because yes, the majority of men are broadway men, are gay...because, broadway consists almost entirely of dancers...not singers...
but since all the other guys are gay...he has little to no competition for all the women on broadway now does he?
Considering all G&S 'operettas' were composed as "music hall' entertainments, lampooning political and social 'norms' in Britain at the time of their composing, I think G&S would support and enjoy this 'megamix.' They were musical comedies of the highest order, mocking the 'stiff' operas across town, not stuffed shirt operettas. Unfortunately, they have been Doyle-carted into the museum. It takes inventive thinking to put these museum pieces back into popular culture! Bravo on this medley!!!
@upstatepiano Eh, while I agree the Doyle Carte performances could sometimes use some life drummed into them, I don't buy into the argument that this is what G&S intended. Remember, Sullivan always wanted to be regarded as a serious composer.
I saw this when I was a little kid! ADORED Jon English, he just MADE the show. My Dad told me a little while ago that I loved the bit with the strobe lights so much I was bouncing in my chair, and that I wouldn't stop singing songs from it for a week XD This one was in Sydney in 1995, right? I would have been eight, then.
Wonderful, absolutely great. Even the Jon doesn't have the greatest voice, he was an AMAZING pirate king. Funniest I've ever seen. I love this production!

Wow. That was just amazing. I've sat here and watched the whole show from start to finish (its set up as a playlist). The show was great and the curtain call was just the icing on top. Thank you so much for posting all this. What a fantastic version.
(By the way, Ruth's 'pilot/pirate' number is missing from the playlist. Not a criticism - just letting you know).
Thanks so much for sharing these clips. I think this is my favourite one!
I can't believe how fit the pirates and policemen are--after doing the full operetta they can come out and dance for the whole finale?!?! I wish the light were better so I could see their crazy dancing better.
THAT WAS CRAZY! Man, I wish every musical production had a great curtain-call after-show thing like that. Can you imagine Phantom or Les Mis? Tee hee!
I ordered the DVD a few days ago. I"m glad I found this whenI did. I own the DVD with Kevin Kline and Rex Smith, but previewing this version I had to go and find the DVD. Thanks for sharing this.
Awesome! Glad you like it. There's also "The Mikado" and "HMS Pinafore" with (mostly) the same company. If I get more spare time I'll start uploading the Mikado. That one's my favourite of the 3.
