Anyone knew who wrote the original version of this?
I heard Geoff Boycott do something very similar on TV in the Seventies?
But mate of mine told me he did this in the late 60s.

Although the original author is unknown and is based on the arrangement and
performances by Leslie Sarony (1897-1985) in the English Halls.
The poem has been attributed to (Eugene Field) an English author primarily
associated with 19th century childrens stories.
The Fivepenny Piece did this version to Ghost Riders in the Sky in 1977.
Its been recited and sang by many different people, although i have never
heard of a cricketer doing it. Thanks for looking.
