  • you look like child milesters

  • did he come out of the women's bathroom?

  • I guess "movie makers" also don't use hand dryers or towels....:)

  • Brilliant start to this video. Sorry to be personal, and off the subject, Peter, but you do need to loose some weight, like NOW. Thanks for the posting.

  • Do you understand the concept of a "hand dryer?" its for drying your hands lol

  • The concept of moviemaking easily makes this the most important video you two cats have made. Film culture internationally has a death grip in countries like Australia where you're socially & professionally castrated for being independent of the clique film culture's created. Embracing Moviemaking as an independent culture is the best thing anyone can do right now to get seen & heard.

  • Nice tricks. It might have been helpful to explain that deep focus would require more care in framing as a shallow focus helps to concentrate the viewer's attention on the subject rather than being distracted by too much detail in the rest of the scene.

  • thank you for this channel! Informative there its a duel theme that is interesting

Hope to see more soon.especially making video look like film, anything to make the shoestring look like the real thing lol

  • Washing hands?????????

  • Kudos to you guys. Anything that is a positive should be lauded. Sure, you can ALWAYS improve the message (focus the message), but you work needs to be thanked. Also, and you may not understand this from your perspective, but you seem to have a partnership going. Don't take that for granted. I would imagine that there are MANY who are envious of the simple fact of your partnership; it is, known or not, invaluable. Keep up the work.....

  • This video isn't actually about HOW to get a film look. It veers off into the weeds of DSLRs, Adobe CS4, and upcoming developments with Red, etc.

Y'all lost your narrative, your story, your focus. Filmmaking 101: actually plan, and pull off, the film (sorry, 'movie') you meant to make.

This one's rambling, to be generous - and it's only a short. ;-)

  • @sumgai777 Yeah, sorry. We're always trying to improve our content. This episode was better than a lot of our oldest stuff. And I think we've improved a lot since then. Appreciate the criticism! :)

  • Believe it or not, you guys are partly responsible for me throwing down money on equipment... Wong Fu and Philip Bloom mainly, but let's just say this. I'm responsible for a few of those views on this video! Haha, and this is like 2 years ago! Do you think it's funny how you guys were trying to figure out the future of DSLR's in this video?

  • @RoarRibbit Haha, so weird watching this again. We've been following along with WongFu since they started too. I think I want to start doing TZ episodes again! It's been too long :)

  • Good tips.

    It should be called moviemaking.

Too bad the Red Scarlet never came out.

  • RED Scarlet 2/3" is coming in May/June :)

  • any word on the price?

  • 2/3" Scarlet with fixed 8x lens is $4750

2/3" Scarlet with interchangeable lens (brain only) is $2750

Scarlet S35 (full-frame sensor, brain only) is $7000

  • terrible acting. cant stand it, get some actors, well produced though.

  • @TheFakeTruth1 We aren't acting, we're just talking. Also, this was quite a while back. Check out our website for better content :)

  • Why didn't you use soap when you washed your hands? WHY?????

  • @pf008 or paper towels!!!!!

  • @jackygiant lol

  • Many of these confusions arise from practical photography, when you do things without thinking about it, like moving further away or going closer.

It doesn't mean it should be preached as facts. If you know the theory, you can start explaining the practical photography parts better, like why 300/1.2 would have shorter DOF than 50/1.2 and so on.

  • Only if your subjects are magnified differently ie. you shoot from the same distance. Perspective will be same from the same spot. In your video you tell people to shoot from far away and zoom in, which only changes perspective, not DOF. Try this and compare.

These photo theory misconceptions will never go away if you as the authors don't have your theory down correctly.

  • If you use a 300mm or 50mm won't matter to DOF when your subject is the same size in the frame. I don't know what limiting the perspective means, other than that you're going for a flatter perspective? It has nothing to do with DOF in any way.

The other big misunderstanding in photography is perspective. When using longer focal lengths, you do get flatter perspective, but that is only if you move back, away from the subject. A 50mm and 300mm lens has the same perspective at the same distance.

  • @pacosaidso f/1.2 on a 300mm versus f/1.2 on a 50mm be shallower in term of DOF. Yes, it will also be "flatter".

I'm not trying to argue here, I just don't want our viewers being confused by comments that others leave.

  • Shooting from far away and zooming in on your subject won't make the DOF shorter than shooting close up, if aperture and magnification ratio is the same. The difference will be in perspective only.

Saying that longer focal lenghts give shorter DOF is just wrong and implies that short focal lenghts can't have short DOF. Which is not true. You can have very short DOF with extreme wide angles. Again, the difference will be in perspective because you have to move closer with the wides.

  • @pacosaidso Perspective is definitely another part of it. But zooming in actually does create shallower DOF because you're limiting the perspective. We're not saying it's the only way, but we wanted to create a video that would be useful for amateur filmmakers to recreate the "film look". Saying that does not imply that wide angles can't have shallow DOF. We're well aware of how a camera works.

  • Sure don't hurt. :-)

  • Just add 1 frame of strobe and you will have a "film" look.

  • @Rocketryman Hah, and add a movie projector sound effect.

  • You guys echoed a lot of my same thoughts October last year. Thumbs up.

  • Hi sean and Peter, thanks for subscribing to my channel. I'm the guy who posted the response to you video! I was wondering 1) what you thought about my video 2) how I can avoid that "choppy" feel to my video. I shot it in 24 p on my canon hg20.

If you guys can help me out... I would truly appreciate it.

p.s. love your channel. Respect for all the time and effort you guys put into your work. It's awesome!

  • Heya, not a bad little test :)

It looks like you might have some sort of interpolation issue. Did you render at 23.97 or actual 24fps? You camera most likely shoots at 23.97. What are you using to edit? If it's Sony Vegas, try right clicking on the footage on the timelime and disable smart resampling.

  • zooming in doesn't simulate lower depth of field, it creates lower depth of field.

and the sensor size has nothing to do with the depth of field, that's entirely up to the lens in front of the sensor, the larger it can open (f stops), the more shallow the depth of field can get.

  • Okay, you're right about zooming not simulating, my mistake.

But a larger sensor does in fact equal shallow-er DOF. f/1.2 on a full frame sensor will look much MUCH more shallow than f/1.2 on a 1/2" sensor.

  • and you seem to be right about the sensor, my mistake. didn't know that, learn something new everyday :) i admire your diligence.

  • @tcrowl22 zooming does help. helped me with my canon hv30

  • @tcrowl22 so why, if one used a 50 mm f/1.4 lens on a full frame sensor, this would produce a depth of field so shallow it would require an aperture of 0.9 on a camera with a 1.6X crop factor?

  • Sony Vegas Pro 9 can edit Red camera footage as well...

  • Pro 9 wasn't released yet when we made this video :)

  • Sup Guys!

I just bought the Nikon D90. Though it doesn't compare to the quality and the features of the Canon's 5D, it's still pretty amazing. The cool thing about the 5D is that it uses a Full Frame Sensor so it can give a much better film look than most video cameras can to day. With the added changable lenses, it's heading in a very intersting direction. Also though, be on the look out for Nikon's D400 coming out soon which will most likely compare to or exceed the 5D in video quality.

  • good vid

  • Hey Sean & Peter,

You guys rock! Thanks for making these educational videos!

    -myoozikman

  • lmfao

this is at regional park XD

  • Thank you. I have been a fan of deep focus since CK. I agree that it's foolish to emulate the limitations of an increasingly more outdated medium; we should work instead toward techniques that utilize and indeed enhance the aesthetic possibilities offered by digital.

  • ok, my bad, i couldn't find it before. Wow, i'm glad i watched your video, i had no idea that such technology would be available for such a great price , this is such a break through for us very low budget filmmakers.

  • I'm a little confused, did you say you could get a Red camera for $3,000 ? I don't understand how that could be true when it is a camera that is priced well over $ 20,000 .

  • red scarlet.

  • ahhh.. red scarlet , the holy grail of digital cinema for indie filmmakers... :) I`m also waiting for that camera... I wont be able to afford the 35mm version only the 2/3.. I hope that the 16mm type of depth of field will be enough for me.. although i would kill for the 35mm DOF... :)

  • lol i just noticed he came out of the girls bathroom

  • y are u touch ur friend while hes sleeping?

  • It's a joke, man.

  • o well, they make a cute couple

  • I agree with what you are saying about you don't need to have a film look to make a good movie, but I've always liked the look of film be choice, not because I think I need to. So that's why I use a film look.

  • Thanks a lot guys :) I'm still learning the ropes on making films and it's been a pretty smooth transition, if not a little bit of an info overload. Any tips or maybe vids on equipments like camera and mics for beginners?

  • how do you make your video this size? help me please

  • lol citizen kane

  • very helpful. thanks

  • really good

  • hmm, what microphones are you using? thats pro audio!

  • Hehe, thanks. We're using a Sennheiser MKH-60 :)

  • I like the way shallow depth of field focuses peoples attention. any tips on exporting and uploading?

I have and xl2 and getting it onto youtube destroys my quality alot. I export as avi uncompressed, then compress with a free mp4 converter.

  • try using sensorson squeeze. Its a little expensive, but totally worth it.

  • What kind of camera do you use your videos look so clear.

  • Wonderful parody of Citizen Kane. Very funny gag (about 4 minutes in), wiping the wet hands off on your chest. lol. Loved the explanations! Very informative!

  • Ah thanks again guys :) Learned a lot this episode. Huzza! A youtube video where i learn something. Hope you're both doing well.

    -Keax, from the forums

  • Oh, wow, Citizen Peter was amazing! :) Good job!

  • Great to have you guys back, doing the show again. Excellent tips as always... Tell me though, is it just me or does Peter always wear striped t-shirts and you Sean, always a neutral t-shirt? :) Oh by the way.. Just finished shooting a short film. Will put it up once it's finished! Anyways, have a great week!

  • Hehe, thanks man. And yep, we try and keep our clothes to the same style every episode. All I have in my closet are solid colored t-shirts! XD

Let us know when you post your short! (It's hard to keep track of everyone here)

  • I've never properly thanked you for making all the Take Zero episodes... but I really wanted to just let you know that you do a GREAT job making all the episodes and I GREATLY thank you for taking the time to make such professional tutorials and giving such great advice. I always enjoy all of your videos! Keep it up, you are one of my favorite youtubers for sure!

    --Justin

  • Thanks so much Justin :)

It's really nice to know when your work is appreciated. And no need for the thanks. We love doing this!

  • awesome

  • Wow. Amazing. I really needed this lesson.

I like the new style by the way.! Really cool!

    Keep it up!

  • Thanks man, how've you been?

  • ah..Busy..No time to make movies or edit the ones i have made.. But on the bright side, i'm getting a Macbook!

  • Awesome! You're going to love it :) I love mine!

  • So you like the D-slrs better than your Ex1?

  • No, no, I was almost kidding. They DO shoot in higher resolution, though. But I love my EX1 :)

  • Bravo! You guys are the best.

  • and what are d-slr's? i thought those were digital still cameras

  • Yeah, they're digital still cameras. But they're now (finally) starting to include video capabilities which are surprisingly good.

  • thats interesting, i wonder what is different in them from video cameras? bigger sensors?

my sister was telling me and she's a professional photographer now, that newer still cameras arent using megapizels anymore. She said they use lazers and are supposedly 50 grand.

    heard anything about it?

  • Video cameras actually have a shutter that's opening and closing (or rotating, actually) 24 times per second. D-SLR's turn their shutter off and it digital creates frames. I've never messed with one, but I think it's safe to assume they have a lot of motion blur.

  • you'd have to worry about pointing your censor at bright lights. without a lens cap and the lens sitting pointing at sun the sensor would burn out so fast with no shutter to close up.

  • i didnt really think the test demo had too much of a film look, seemed more like film noir.

btw this episode teaches a lot

  • Nice... Glad to have you back :)

  • Thanksya!

  • a real feel good theme to the vid. good job, thats insane red camera's start at 3000$?

what is the size of the frame on that?

  • They're actually updating the camera, but they claim it's only good news (either a price drop or feature update or both!) - but originally the Scarlet was going to be 3k (that's 3 times larger than 1920x1080). Crazy!

They're also coming out with a RED Epic that'll be 5k and will rival 35mm film.

  • yeah i was reading on it this morning. to get a fully funtioning one ur lokoing at 28 ooo$. i had to add the lens and everything on the price of the body, which alone is 7500. for the 3k one.

but is there even any 5k or 3k projection tv's or monitors yet?

  • You sure you're not looking at the RED One? The Scarlet comes with a built in lens and lcd screen. I think it's almost ready to go without any additions.

Well, you can shoot in lower resolutions, but 3k - 5k is made for real movie production to be projected on the big screen :)

  • how much does the scarlet go for? and 3k and 5k is standard for feature films now!!?

and are there any 5k tv's you know of?

  • It was originally going for $3000, but they're updating it and they claim it's "good new" so it's possible that it'll be cheaper.

5k is about equal to the resolution that 35mm film is scanned at, so yes! That's always been the standard for features, hehe.

I seriously doubt there are any 5k TV's. At that resolution, you want a projector ;)

  • oh, i never knew that, thanks.

you guys are very knowledgeable. i was telling my friend about take zero in first period. U guys have a very focused look at how to get a specific feeling out of a video.

are there any forums you learn off of or sites mainly?

  • Hah, thanks man :)

We tend to learn from all different kinds of sources. One of the best ways we've learned is actually by producing Take Zer0 itself.

  • What kind of Steadicam did you use?

  • Hehe, that was just a tripod actually. I was holding the legs. We do plan on making one in the near future, though (complete with video lesson).

  • Nice stuff guys. Glad to see Take Zero is back.

  • really nice one of the best yet.good to see you back to what you do best.

  • Thanks, we already have the next episode shot and mostly edited, too. We're fully back on track!

  • We were trying to give advice without telling people to spend money, but yeah maybe we should have mentioned adapters.

3ccd sensors are generally larger than 1ccd sensors, so that's another part of it :)

  • i like the new format, cant wait for more. omg i cant wait for the scarlet, it is going to be amazing!

  • I know! Early to mid 2009!

  • This is a really nice NEW TZ format, looks very well thought out ,Hey 1 question of the two of you who sits at the pc and does the editing and mixing. Hmmm tz behind the scenes

  • Well, we both take turns writing and editing. We both have our strong points, but doing it like this really helps us practice.

  • It's not 3k for 3k anymore: "Wipe you minds of the past announced Scarlet. Forget the design and forget the price. It is all different now. We think you will be surprised." Jim on scarletuser(.)com

  • Yeah, but he says it can only be good, right? I'm totally looking forward to it, whatever the Scarlet ends up being :)

  • I'm also pretty psyched about the RED Scarlet, you plan on getting one?

  • One? We plan on getting TWO! :D Unfortunately, they're doing a redesign and it won't be out early next year anymore. I'm guessing it'll be closer to summer.

  • hey sean, its migzz here, are you now using a steadycam?

  • Heh, not yet. Hopefully pretty soon, though. That was just our camera on a tripod and I was holding the tripod legs :)

  • Whahah the bathroom scene was awesome!

  • Hehe, some kids saw us shooting in the bathroom and kept asking what we were doing.
