Inayat Khan did present the Unity of Religious Ideals at the turn of the century, greatly downplaying his Islamic roots in order to make his teachings more palatable to Western minds. To their credit, the Sufis of his lineage do still do some happier sounding zikrs, and of course the Dances of Universal Peace all over the world. Since God/Allah/Great Spirit/Brahman is closer than the jugular vein, why all this bawling, moaning and contortion?
jeey.. i thought Hazrat I.K. thought universal religion/spirituality.. this shit is freaking muslim whorship. And they seem like a dark suicidal sect!! What has happened? No joy there?
Think i will read my H.I.K books with a little more critical eye from now on.. jeez..
A dutch disciple once asked Hazrat Inayat Khan why the Shia seem so sad and he said, "It's because they worship a tomb". (example Hazrat Ali, or ... guess who) The cult of personality is one pitfall. Your natural observation of their vibe says a lot to me. When one is involved in it over a period of time, it can be hard to recognize the obvious. Hazrat Inayat Khan's books are filled with beauty and idealism. It's not his books, but the degradtion of the essence of the message.

many of the prayers that we sing on the sufi path are bright and happy, some are more subtle and quiet, some are muslim, some are vedic, some are christian. It just so happens that this moment I decided to film and put on youtube.
This was the evening of his Urs (the anaversery of his death day) and this moment was very high and celebratory. We'd all been at the dargah all day listening to classical Indian music performance, gathering together from many faith traditions to all dance universal peace, eating and drinking tea, and praying.
There are many feelings in life, sometimes great joy, sometimes quieter and reflective moments. The teachings of Pir-O-Mershid Hazrat Inayat Khan teach me to appreciate the spectrum and realize that each one is a message from the divine.
