  • Why do soooo many people want to buy him a beer or smoke a fat one w/ him when clearly his problems w/ substance abuse dictates that that is the LAST thing anyone should've done around him? Like a lot of musicians, he was surrounded by enablers & losers who partied with him. A real friend who loved him wouldn't have enabled his drug abuse. RIP Elliott xo You are greatly missed.

  • @AprilReign

    He wasn't a baby...

  • That's probably the reason you wrote that. Because you’re just a kid yourself, and irrespsonsiblity is the province of youth. To make dumb mistakes. So this is probably lost on you. I’m not telling you not to do drugs. I’m saying something altogether different. But in your case, why not go get yourself some hydromorphone, enough to kill an elephant, and go play in traffic. C’mon, it’s all right, you’re not a baby, after all.

  • @mrdanielsir @mrdanielsir Mrr?? Sirr?? whatever… and what a pointless answer. Absolutely no regard for anybody. You probably won't understand why it's not a good idea to tempt someone with a substance abuse problem by giving them more drugs. When it's sadly already the cause of his death that anybody who wanted to do drugs with him, has done a heinous thing. To know he is dead from it already, is an irresponsible thing to say. I'm not telling other people not to do drugs. To each his own.

  • @AprilReign

Exactly, to each is own. He had problems, but at the end of the day he was an adult, and responsible for his own mistakes. Making dumb mistakes is not exclusively the province of youth.

Also, it seems a bit harsh to suggest that I go play in traffic on hydromorphone, especially if you think I am a child...

  • @mrdanielsir No, you shouln’t infer that I think you are a child who should play in traffic - that is just as overly literal & inane as your other comments; I was implying that you are just full of bad ideas & perhaps like a child, you don’t appreciate the consequences of your actions & it's horrible how irrelevant his bad mistakes are for you not to appreciate others who mourn the loss of this awesome musician…oh, that, and that people like you weren’t his friends.

  • He was a musical god among men.

  • this is the first elloitt song i ever heard.... oh the memories<3

  • this song always makes me feel loved :)

  • @rollercoasteraz i hope you are. otherwise your statement is just ridiculous

  • OMFG HOW COULD MUSIC BE ANY GREATER?

  • fucking love the lyrics ffs.

  • He deserved better.

  • He was so beautiful, inside and out.

  • some people are hilarious and really charming but can't hold normal relationships. i think the alameda lyrics show this about elliott and people of the same type. i can def relate.

  • Actually, his music is depressing but if you watch his interviews people that hang with him have a blast with him and talk a lot. He expresses his feelings through music but he's not a sad sap in social times.

  • @KimYungSoo Yeah man, but if you went to any of his live shows post-2000 (Or even seen them on youtube), you'd know he was a seriously fucked up dude. Even when he could remember the notes, he'd often go into rants about random things for minutes.

He was a great musician and songwriter, and also it seems an actor; as he was able to fool the people at the rehab centres he stayed at into thinking he was fine, when really he was still messed up.

I love the guy, but he was by no means happy.

  • damn... forreal bro? Shit, i didnt think he was that messed up judging buy his concerts. Like seriously, bless the guys soul. He was messed up and curse his fathers soul.

  • stepfather abused him not real dad.

  • @Niamhdm7871 oh.. Well, case is that he had a rough childhood and I'm sure his stepfather will burn in hell...

  • elliott smith was known to be a real fun guy to hang out with, always joking around. he also was known to be somewhat of a loner too, and people like u are the reason he probably liked being alone!!

  • Elliott forever and ever. In my opinion, the greatest songwriter and most real. A damn shame he had to die. I'm still confused about his death. It's still so unclear to me. Something tells me he did not stab himself in the heart twice. I think he was murdered.

  • @coldhardfacts After what I've read about Elliott and the last six months he was alive, I agree with you. Suicide stopped fitting his profile in about March '03. An amazing musician.

  • haha yes i would also love to have a beer and a cigarette with Elliott. Never mind Lennon, Hendrix, and Cobain. I would get Elliott a pint and ask him his views on life, have a laugh or two, then if there is time get Jedi level songwriting tips.

  • todays a sad day missin you man

  • yeah, along with almost every other song on new moon, a la almost over, georgia georgia, new disaster, angel in the snow, talking to mary, seen how things are hard, placeholder, first timer.... list goes on

  • 1994?! whoa, didn't know this song was so early.

one of my faves, from my favourite collection of elliott songs.

  • it was on new moon which is a collection of songs from 94-97. give that album a listen and keep in mind that all of those songs were written for either/or and elliott smith. i still can't believe this didn't make either of those albums, an absolutely amazing song

  • id buy him a case

  • oh man, wish could give him a big hug and buy him a beer....

    RIP elliott xo

  • @JamesGrady2 i would smoke a big one with him

  • @JamesGrady2 I think Johnny walker red would go down better with elliott ;)

  • @JamesGrady2 awee this is the best comment ever!

  • I was surprised to see the pose Elliott does @ 0.44 very Richy from the Manic Street Preachers. Great song by the way one of my Fave's on New Moon.

  • I think I would have given up anything to see Elliott happy, even his music...

    He really deserved it.

  • I truly love his music and I relate to it more than I do to any other; but God damn Elliott has the most annoying and cliche fans in the business, and you SgtSanchez are the icing on the cliche cake.

  • This just in: Person on internet determines wishing someone happiness is cliché. World in shock. China demands apology. More at 11.

  • Why you tell me stuff

    that's so plainly untrue?

If you'll be straight with me,

    I'll be straighter with you.

  • Love you, Elliott.

  • i love his "bust a move" shirt.

god do i wish he was still alive making music.

  • One of my favorite songs by him. I really like. At one point in my life it was a very fitting song for me.

"I haven't wanted to do anything for a long time"

"What are you doing hanging out with me?"

    Yeah you get the point.

    Rest In Peace-Elliott

  • God dammit, I miss this guy.

  • why didn't he put this on an album it's amazing

  • its on new moon, the second post-humous album.

  • yeah after he died i mean when he was alive why didn't he put it on an album.

  • its interesting how many songs he never released.. from a basement on a hill was put together by his girlfriend nd she omitted alot of songs that he recorded but she didnt think were appropriate to release with him being dead

  • Actually it wasn't his girlfriend (Jennifer Chiba) who omitted anything. It was his family who assumed all rights to his music and they axed songs that gave reference to the abuse Elliott suffered by them. Out of shame no doubt. Jennifer was in a lawsuit with his record company trying to recover partial royalties for her work with Elliott and did not stand well with Elliott's family. Thus I don't think she would ever hold songs from the album. She had no control and loved Elliott...

  • *In reference to joes2250

  • soemeone that knows the meaning of expressions... i miss u elliot : (

  • come back ellito :(

  • the only guy i can compare him to is jeff buckley. and thats because of their flawless artistry and genuinity, words cant express how penetrating they are, and because of their tragic young deaths... i dont think any body else is in their league. doesnt matter how many albums are sold, or not sold for that matter.., ahahah..

  • nick drake also in that regard. i dunno if you've listened to him but if you like elliott you'll like him. pink moon is absolutely phenomenal, just as flawless as either/or.

  • it just seems kind of off to compare him to people after his time.

  • it seems kind of off to me to compare him to anyone, really.

  • He looks like a cross between Trent Reznor and Bam Margera...

Not trying to show any disrespect, just making an observation.

  • Naw man I can totally see that.

    I don't think thats disrespectful.

Haha it's kind of funny though.

  • hehe true....he's got a bam margera look going on.

  • In this brainwashed world, everything is about looks. Listen to his music, he's more beautiful than any model on TV.

  • true. he is my favorite singer and his talents do make him beautiful.

  • I agree, that should be what makes people beautiful.

  • good stuff

  • if you are all done like you said you'd be, what you're doing hanging out with me.

  • great song!

  • i just wish i could've seen him live just once

Amazing song it's so much better than the crap nowadays

    good job thank you

  • What do you class as nowadays??? he only died in 2003 for christ sake... hardly a musician from a different era, and theres plenty of good bands and music around, you just have to open your ears, mind and eyes and look for it.

  • im talking about the crap like techno and stuff like that, i dont class all rock/pop or even folk in this time era as bad, or any other genre, except all the sounds they make on the computer, i just believe elliott took the stage thats all

  • check out 'Grouper', 'Kaki King', 'Joanna Newsom', 'Feist', 'Howling bells'. you might might might might like them! good listening! :D x

  • not bad has a nice sounds thanks man :)

elliott is still the best lol

  • the best in your heart :D

  • the newest grouper record is so fucking good

  • YES! Im glad theres someone else out there who is a grouper fan. you have an epic winning taste good sir.

  • Absolutely brilliant song writer, the lyrics in this song have more meaning than most any other song written today. I fucking hate myself for not being able to see him in person. I would do anything to talk or even see him play live one more time.

  • my god at 0:25 he looks so old. But his music still rocked.

  • elliott was one of the best

  • I feel sorry for the people that don't understand this man...the best

  • this song could be a cheers episode. it had to have been written in a bar

  • way up there with roman candle as best songs of this elliot era...

    so good.

  • (He was so beautiful.)

  • loved him..

    myspace dot c o m/sundaymailman

    thanks for the up load

  • metaphorically, too many to count

  • jesus how many cliffs did he fall off of

  • OMG, I love this song soooooooooo much!

  • he died of self inflicted knife wounds.. its wasnt because of the drugs or alcohal.

  • love you elliott

    XO

  • i love this live version.

  • So he took his own life at a young age. In the photos that are showing him ageing from the effects of Alchol and you can see the haunted stress in his face as he began to look older. The sweetest photo is of him as a little boy holding a Kiss alive 2 LP!

  • well, the crack probably had a lot to do with his aging. he wasn't that young though, was he? around 40 or something?

  • No, Elliott was only 34 years old when he offtd his self, all the Alchol and drug use just aged him really fast! Just shows that life style does effect your face and health!!!!

  • He also feel off a cliff while intoxicated and *luckily* hit a tree which saved him but badly scarred his face..aparently.

  • uhhh.. nooo......

was touring with a bunch of people and all of a sudden he stopped the van, ran out really fast and fell off of a cliff.[it was dark] another guy fell behind him who was trying to catch up with him. the tree scratched up his back really bad and he wouldn't go to the hospital for stitches.

he later said "he wanted to be anywhere but in his own skin". [found in the book ballad of the big nothing by benjamin nugent.]

    <3 Grace

  • well, i looked it up again, and it says he jumped off and hit a tree, everywhere.

    look it up!

and the big nothing book has been none to twist the truth.

    but i dunno

  • agreed, ballad of big nothing was only ok. the autumn de wild book with the interviews is the book that should be read as well as the SPIN article about elliott.

  • anywhere but his own skin, i know that feeling so well, i asked my ex the other day if she had ever felt like she wanted to burst out of her body cause i didn't know if anyone had felt like that before, she acted like i was crazy

  • Yeah, He murdered his own self,...sadly.

  • well, the crack probably had a lot to do with his aging. he wasn't that young though, was he? around 40 or something?

  • He was only 34. :(

  • actually heroin ages u faster than crack.....look at jerry garcia..

  • this specific version isn't on new moon, but this song is on the album

  • which specific version is this? love it. its raw.

  • It's from "Confusion" on elliottsmithbsides dot com

  • it is also featured on new moon.

  • but this doesn't sound like the new moon version...

  • so....still beautifully sad i would take either of them

  • just discovered this song--its amazing

  • Possibly my favorite song.

  • :) :)

  • tnx :}
