  • i love how dean asks the camera to come closer with the trumpet and then he's like i don't know how to play this lol

    absolutely awesome these two

  • WOWWWWWWWWWWW DEAN WHAT A TIMING

  • This is May, 1954 not 1955 although they might have re-run it.

  • Jerry used to put his ALL into every performance...not because of seeking attention, but that was just his way...this was 2 years before their break up...they broke up 10 years to the date of them starting together

  • when tv was live, you had no choice but to go to the end. they were consummate performers who worked til they dropped, literally! other live near disasters: carmen miranda having a heart attack live while dancing with jimmy durante, (she died later that night) and the great one breaking his leg live, and carney trying to cover for him through the rest of the show. yeah, we'll never see talent like that again...

  • ...and it's very telling on how rocky their relationship got towards the mid 50s. Definitely a great read though because despite whatever animosity that existed, they were a great team and a set of legends!

Thanks for posting this and sorry about the double comment...haha I just REALLY enjoy Dean Martin performances regardless of whichever phenomenal talent is beside him (Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, etc) - Dean, to me, steals the show with his suavity and coolness

  • Jerry was always the over-achiever so I'm not surprised he passed out. Between their busy schedules, lack of sleep, and his need for attention, it was bound to happen. This is the year before the duo split I believe, and it's strange to see but you can almost feel the tension between them - like when Dean says "I told you I should have sang another song." That was a artistic decision on Jerry's part and I think Dean resented him a little at this point in their career. I read the bio Dean & Me...

  • Also (sorry for the double comment) that would explain why Dean was waving "cut!" so frantically! He probably saw that Jerry was at the very limit.

  • One of my favorite "ad lib" sections.

(Poor Jerry! No idea that he really passed out...! But I'm not surprised, either. Wow.)

It just cracks me up that he says "Oy vey." You don't hear that very often from Jerry! :)

  • He is a great drum player.I thought he was just playing around too uuntil I read the comments!! Thanks for posting

  • See 5:18 - you can see Jerry DOES pass out

  • The guy with the Michael Jackson style curl standing behind Dean is Milt Trenier, a good friend and still a magnificent entertainer in Chicago. Milt told us that they all had to stretch that final segment to fill unused time (live TV) and at the very end Jerry actually did pass out.

  • Jerry actually passed out? Geez, with him it's so hard to tell when he's joking or not!

  • Yep! According to Milt they all had to carry him off stage and get some wet towels. He said they were both wonderful to work with though. Actually my producer/arranger also worked with him much later on an album project, and said Jerry was very kind to all of the band and gave everyone special gifts when they finished. He says that most of the artists today just give out a free CD. We did it Jerry's way and gave out some nice presents!

  • is there anything jerry couldnt do wow

  • wow, jerry really is a good drummer! I didn't know that!
