From time to time Worked with Lars and Fredrik in Lars Workshop in my former work, a useful tip he told me was if one needs an even harder edge one can simply wrap a pice of the damazener steel around a pice of pure high carbon steel then one still gets the strenght and beatuty of the damaszener blade but boes not need compromize for the material in the edge. (however, Ni steel is wery hard itself and the otherpart is already high carbon so it not critical just if want extra fine sharpness)
@dactylus90 First: Damascus is in Asia. Second: Folding steel is a technique that has been used in Europe for over one thousand years. Before smiths could get large quantities of high quality steel like today, it was much easier to take multiple steels with different properties to make a more resilient blade. The Saxons did it, the Scandinavians did it, it is definitely a European technique.
@dactylus90 No. Scandinavian swords were often made of multiple bars of steel twisted together then folded to form a center, then harder steels were used to form the edge. Saxons used a similar technique. Folding steel is not a uniquely Asian technique. If you have some proof you can pull out of thin air, please do, instead of just saying my information is wrong without making a reasoned contradiction.
@purplesquirrl I have been manking swords and knives the old way for half my life and you are spot on. The people of northern Europe were making swords that were made of folded and twisted bars of iron and steel 900 years before the Japanese. Their swords were also VERY sharp, not some blunt bar. The reason we only hear about Japanese swords is because it is exotic.
@Brandulfrsmed That's very interesting. Is it true that the main reason the Japanese folded their steel many times was because they needed to even out the impurities due to Japan's naturally bad steel?
@synal Spot on yet again! The iron ore in Japan was/is rather impure vs. the northern European counterpart. The ore from Sweden was highly prized as was the ore from Spain. The way iron was made back in those times pre and post Viking age as well as the Japanese way would yield a mass like a hard sponge, full of voids and so forth. "Folding" was done by both peoples as a means to clean and homogenize the final product, iron and steel alike. It takes quite a bit of work to make a sword that way!
@Brandulfrsmed Ah, I see. I think that you're right about the exotic factor giving Japanese swords its high status in popular culture. In fact, I read that after Japan began trading with the West, some samurai began to wear western style plate armor to foil the katana's relatively weak penetration! The reverse is happening here in Asia; Western style swords (especially the Gladius, after Gladiator) is all the rage. I guess people like something different :)
@blugga1001 First I'm going to call you a bit of an idiot just a bit and secondly best of luck on your challenge, really. Make a video of your progress
@attackoftherandom yeah they do, it's probably one of the most common fuels besides the propane forges. it's more reliable and is much hotter burning then coal.

@Breathor you do know that blacksmiths have used machine powered hammers for centuries if not millennia? If not, look up "trip hammer" on wikipedia.
Iron is soft, its really a pleasure to work with. Steel is much harder and you have less time to hammer it with each heating. So machine hammers save a lot of time when hammering the basic shapes and they are great for forge welding (where the more heatings you do, the more chances there are of something going wrong)
When ever I am in a city, school or somewhere, I am on edge and feel out of place. But when I go into the bush with my family or boy scout troop, I am at peace and feel right at home.
@blacksmither1 Yea it is fun, I once played the town blacksmith at a museum set up like an old western town, it was great to show the kids the way things were made long before computer controlled lathes and mills. I was making stuff like branding irons and had the time of my life.
@undercurrentspaulo a "butterfly knife" its a knife that is between 2 handle parts so it can close on both sides and it swings on the handles so it is more like a intrest than i combat weapon
@undercurrentspaulo it's a filipino term for butterfly knife... it is a very popular knife here in the philippines... especially if you visit batangas... ^_^...
Balisong is the Filipino term for a "butterfly knife". I believe the Balisong originated from Taal, Batangas in the Philippines. The name Balisong came from the words "baling sungay" or "broken horn" because the handles of the butterfly knife was originally made from broken carabao (water buffalo) horns.
it isn't required to use borax to draw impurities out of the mettle, but it speeds up the process if you do use it. I personally just fold the mettle over and over again, on some of my better knives i fold it at least 50 times. the more impurities that are in it, the weaker the blade will be, so try to get as much of it out as you can.
@Harbinger417 "Try to get as many impurities out as you can" that is the reason for the Borax! It also makes a far superior weld of the two metals together. Without it or some other agent, (there are a hand full), instead of having a single blade at the end, you get 200 layers of really thin steel. If you aren't careful, you will break one of your blades right in half.
It makes me sad to know how many people will never know the joy of creating something that will survive them with their own hands, and who's entire "life work" could be wiped out by a single electromagnetic pulse taking out a hard drive.
