Wow I seen this other video of Koko reading a book and how much she had progressed over the years. How she easily could turn pages and remembered what all her favorite pictures were. Amazing
@TheRealLaugh99 It would be likely they would be able to see and hear, since those qualities are beneficial to almost every species survival. But your point still stands, I agree that communicating with gorillas doesn't give us much of an insight as far as alien communication goes.
@BowToMySkill i am not a biologist but if we do that, gorillas would lose their primitive insticts and become extinct. experiments are great, but some things go against nature
@MyBeretWasBlue Not true. You cant just send them in the wild if they've never been there, And experimenting shows us how we can help them or what makes us closer to them.
@hotwhire Do you even know what comment MyBeretWasBlue was responding to? Some guy suggesting that hundreds of gorillas be taught sign language and released into the wild. To say that this would cause an imbalance in the natural behavior of gorillas couldn't be more true.
@BowToMySkill I was thinking this, language is passed on through culture generation after generation. If the original Gorillas were using sign language to communicate then they would surely pass this on to their young.
@BowToMySkill I know this is a old comment but for the record: they actually wanted to try that with koko, but she wouldn't breed with the two males they selected for her :)
@BowToMySkill Hahahaha thats what I was thinking.... like would they do sign language to eachother because it just comes natural to them after a while? Lmao
@BowToMySkill I can't remember if it was chimpanzees or gorillas
ut there was a study done where it was observed that chimpanzees/gorillas who knew sign language taught it to their offspring and even came up with a few of their own.
It would be EXTREMELY cool if you would teach Koko to Bench Press and all these weight lifting things like squats, he would need special bars and stuff to get a workout. It would be cool if he broke the Bench Press record of the world with almost no "Pushing Yourself" dedication at all hahahaha!
You know lady, you are sick!!!! You , your friends and the whole project are SICK!!! How giriila can be good or bad, human could be but that is only the animal and that is the natural behavior. Teaching the animal very difficult, human stuff is like a torture and all of you guys should go to the JAIL !!!
when mankind discovers seed AI to use on yourselves, if the apes are still around, they surely will be invigorated with such intelligence. Hopefully we don't enslave them or some shit.
"We established communication between two individuals of another species for the first time". Uhhh, nearly all social animals communicate with eachother. Just not in English.
i love gorillas. For my final major art piece i did two china graph drawings of an alpha male but didn't get a great score because they didn't agree with me comparing apes to humans and all my reasonings. They should watch this and see if i'm wrong. Unlike the graders i observed gorillas for half a year so i know what i was talking about. Still so angry ffs arghhh *tear build up
These gorillas are more intelligent than these humans.
I doubt those humans are smart enough to learn to speak gorilla & eat natural food instead of crackers, candy and donuts.
They seem BORED & even annoyed at doing human activities that they seem to find silly. I get the feeling they just want out of that environment & out into the jungle with others like them.
@Zapppo You don't LEARN gorilla. Gorilla's don't have language. And the only reason we eat junk food and gorillas don't is that we have junk food and gorillas don't. And while Gorillas are incredibly intelligent, they aren't as intelligent as us. If a gorilla could take a human IQ test, he or she would probably score something like and 80.
@Zapppo If your idea of intelligence is simply reaction and preservation, then you could say that ants who build colonies or butterflies that fly hundreds of miles are highly intelligent. Most peoples idea of intelligence is instead applying reasoning, knowledge and understanding to a problem through rational thought. These are not biochemical actions. A dolphin does not learn to use sonar for example, ants are literally programed from birth to colonize. these is a biochemical actions.
I understand U R trying to differentiate, but my point is, thought is a biochemical reaction that is profoundly skewed by the chemical levels, balances or imbalances in the brain. That aside, dolphins work in teams to corral schools of fish so the whole family can eat. This is a learned skill that takes practice to become successful at. The assumption that ants are 'programmed' from birth is based on the 'we don't know for sure, but we think' deductive reasoning, which isn't proof.
@Zapppo I'm not going to argue with you about what is more intelligent and what isn't. I just wanted it to be clear that chemical behavior should not be confused to volume 'how much intelligent'. On ants, we know that they are only reactive to outside stimuli such as pheromones. It's based on educated reasoning and not just saying they're intelligent 'because look at them'.
@TheBreadfan We agree, biochemical response isn't a measure of intelligence & intelligence is applying reasoning, knowledge & understanding to a problem through rational thought.
I disagree that a dolphin doesn't have to learn how to accurately use their sonar. They are born with ability, but not proficiency including ants & butterflies to a certain degree who do not operate solely on chemical behavior. They have eyes for a reason.
i can't help noticing the chains they tell the gorilla it's a "necklace" my dogs and cats do not have chains, we communicate, they were not subject of study. in a perfect gorilla world no chains. no gorilla killers hunting them in the bush...
Koko would actually be the world champion at 'where's waldo' as gorillas are supremely better than humans at games like that since in the wild they have to be constantly perceptive.

@squigoo
You have based all of your conclusions on a false premise: that humans are the most intelligent animal on the planet.
Dolphins have sonar.
Ants build colonies, live together & depend on one another & don't murder & aren't selfish or greedy within that colony.
Monarch Butterflies can navigate hundreds of miles from Canada to a tiny village in Mexico without using GPS or maps.
Gorillas communicate to one another. They aren't so stupid as to need a language to communicate like we do.
Zapppo 1 year ago
@Zapppo You've confused chemical behavior with cognitive behavior there.
