One opinion doesn't discount numerous others. First your defending Pauly, Now you're arguing for Augie, So to me your the one not listening with your heart, but defending with uor head. Listen, You are entitled to your opinion and me,mine. Why don't leave it at that?
I'm sure Don has had his experiences. No furhter comment, OK? Peace out!
rsalvucc, listen to Tutti Camarata's The trumpeters prayer if you don't think the Gozz, wasn't a great soloist. Do you actually know who he played for, He was the principal trumpeter for Frank Sinatra, NBC, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, I have a Tribute Album signed by evryone who he played for in his career. I don't worship him, but when Harry James says The Goz was the greates lead player ever that mens everything. Maybe you ought to get to know him before you critique him.
@headshrink1 You know Don Rader, right, very solid player--with Woody, Maynard, Basie, ok- a quote
How about Augie Feretti?
I can truthfully say that Chet—that’s what everybody calls him—is the best lead trumpet player I’ve ever worked with. And the most exciting lead I’ve ever heard. That includes cats like Conrad Gozzo.
You are so off about The Great Goz! He was a perfectionist and was the Graetest lead trumpet player, even by his pre-eminent peers such as Harry James. The Goz would call this crap playing. I'm being kind. He doesn't belong in the same sentence or even as a footnote to CONRAD GOZZO!
@headshrink1 Hero worship aside, listen to Goz the Great. It's on Fresh Sound. Goz puts on an articulation clinic on Track 12 Do That Again, Daddy. He was a fabulous lead player. He was not a jazz player. If he was, he kept it under wraps. I never met Pauly, but I can't imagine he would ever put himself and Gozzo in the same category as a lead. And Gozzo died when I was 13, so I never met him. I dig him, but not as a soloist.
....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
I worked with Paul Cohen in the late 1960's when I was a green kid just learning the business. He was a powerful workhorse with great leadership qualities. I worked with him years later when he got off the "road". I just stumbled upon this video, and I called Paul to tell him how much I appreciated his playing then and now. I'm always amused by those who go searching for things to criticize. I guess they never stood infront of a band and played a long solo with a TV camera stuck in their face.
Yes, Paul Cohen is in South Florida and directs the Paul Cohen Big Band every Thursday 1:30 - 3:30pm at the Northwest Focal Point Center in Margate, FL. What a treat to hear these great retired musicians still providing so much entertainment. A blessing for all!
Who is that? he sounds great, his range isn't bad, besides I don't think Count Basie really required a lot of scream parts in the songs he performed. Yeah he had some nice control over the stuff over high C but it did seem limited.
Paul was Basie's lead player off and on throughout the 70's and 80's. To me, this sounds close to how someone like Conrad Gozzo would've played it. Not the really high chops, but you don't need that to play lead. Love his musicality and ideas. Last I heard ( 2 years ago ), Paul was playing/living in Florida.

It's so simple what he's playing, yet so brilliant and there's so much life behind every note! I wish I could sound like that when I improvise.

He is no where close to comparison to The Great Gozz. The Gozz made a trumpet sizzle. He is a good trumpeter but not great.

@headshrink1 Goz could not have played lines like this. Wonderful lead player. Maybe the best ever. But not an improviser. At all.

Criticis should try playing lead on a set of Basie charts and then play an intense ballad and then post their attempts.

@selector111 O wow, I didn't really pay attention to the title of the video, but he sounded a little tired. I really enjoyed this though
