  • Disconnect the intake where the EGR is and have a look. The engine breathing system on Golf diesels is turd and has a habbit of putting engine oil in the intake system. The oil sits in the egr and intake manifold and slow drips down onto the valve heads overnight. That why when the engine is started it seejs like the valve guides are shot.

  • please tell me how you solved the problem. I have a DCI with the same troubles

  • No, the blue smoke is not normal. I don't know about this engine, but I had a car that did this and the valve stem seals were leaking, allowing crankcase oil into the combustion chamber. Could be something like that, or God forbid, a bad head gasket. The only way you are going to know for sure is to do a tear-down. Best of luck to you.

  • Thanks for getting back to me, Mines been in the garage today and they have found no issues with leaks. Here is a link of my smoke and it looks the same as yours so I wouldn't worry is what I've been told. I'll do a video response...

  • nope, no additional progress. It seems to have stopped or reduced considerably now that it is getting warmer. It did however stink of diesel when it was started.

  • Any progress? I'm having the same issue on same car, will be booking into VAG specialist on Tuesday. White smoke = Coolant which was a common problem on early VWs but mines 2007 and I think the problem was solved come late 2005 models. Blue = turbo seals which leads to turbo failure and that's what i've found on the forums. Is there a smell of unburnt diesel as well? This could indicate timing issues so i've heard and of course could be glow plugs but mine does it on warm start too. Hmmm...

  • Its a typical problem of the 2.0 tdi. The cylinderhead crashes, than coolingwater gets into the block and the result is blue smoke and and loosing coolingwater. Take a look into the container of the coolingwater, if its oily there. If so you can be sure that the cylinderhead is broken.

    Sry for my english

  • It has been into VW, but they couldn't replicate it in the workshop. They saw this video and did agree that it was not normal. They were not sure of a solution, so fiddled with the ecu which has done nothing.

  • I would be interested to know if you have found the problem with this as i have a passat with the same issue. I can't determine is this is normal for these engines or not?

  • I know the problem! It's a Volkswagen lol....

My aunt had a 07 Golf 2.0 TDi 140 and after 8 months it was sold due to the amount of trouble it gave her, twas bought in a VW dealer as an Ex Demo, only 24k on the clock and it had to go... In her words the worst car she ever bought. Mind you, she owned a 2002 307 2.0 HDi 110 before that and she loved it to pieces, never any trouble at all unlike the Golf... What's that saying lol..

  • The car has only done 34k and is less than 3 years old, do you think the plugs could have gone in such a short space of time. Also it has done this before when the tandem pump failed, is it likely that this could have happened again?

  • Blue smoke is fine as long as it stops after no more than 10 seconds after starting. Any other smoke normally indicates its very cold or you have 1 or more glow plugs out. Start by changing the glow plugs (£40 or so for a set of 4) as its the cheapest part to replace.
