btw..Our nation went from the high displays of personal initiative of Fredrick Douglass and Homesteaders, to now having a 72% African American out of wedlock birthrate since the Liberal Free relationship 60's. We give out condoms in school and Liberals teach our kids differing positions and styles of sex, yet when one expects even this level of initiative of a disadvantaged youth it's racist. Well i say not having as many expectations has lead to this nations people losing some of their virtue.

It is sad to think that with a history of men like Fredrick Douglass, that so many Black people jump on this mans suggestions as racist right away. The personal initiative that Fredrick Douglass showed to free himself and teach himself to read is nowhere near the small level this man suggests a disadvantaged kid should show in at least using free resources. The gall of these people to call such a man racist, especially when they make excuses that basically excuse not expecting even that little.

All we get from our first black president is calls for more collective entitlement spending and charges of being cowards on race. With the horrible drop out rate under the Liberal beloved pubic education system, what empowerment are African Americans getting out of it, and what worth is my tax money getting out of such a record of education failure. Even one who concedes the need to help others to at least SOME degree with their money, expects results. Hicks is right on. I was a graduate assistant at a major Big 10 university in the early 90s (OJ, Rodney King), and was treated with uniform hatred and disgust by almost every black student I knew there. The faculty either pled ignorance or outright ignored it. Even some of them took an opportunity to "yell at the white kid" in front of a group of students. There will be NO improvement in race relations until that mindset is fixed.

@MasterfulInsane I can agree to this also. To me it's either or. They should do away with all these race "babying" groups, but the truth is, they won't. So if every race gets a group, the white race should be no different. Also, this "Hispanic/Latino is a race" business that the U.S. believes in, should be done away with. Hispanic/Latino is not a race. I am a white Hispanic. Those brown people the U.S. calls "Hispanic" are mestizo: mixed race Native American/white.

@MasterfulInsane I can agree on that, race based groups are really not needed, they divide us further. But if there are going to be here anyway, why not everyone get one, including the whites. But like I said, ultimately they do divide us further. Look at Mexico, there are 4 main racial groups in Mexico: mestizos, whites, Native Americans and others (which include blacks and Asians), but regardless of the different races in Mexico, they all just look at themselves as Mexicans.

Sometimes I think the race issue is too easily used as a way to obscure other reasons for poverty. The problem is that while many people are poor due to race based discrimination, there are also many (black or white) who are poor due to bad choices they made in life when better ones were available. Does anyone have time to determine the cause of every individual case of poverty? So we fall back on sweeping judgements.

Probably the most significant deficientcy in underprivilaged kids lives is lack of a mentor. Traditionally that would be the dad, or a person in the community one can aspire to. Unfortunately today's roll model is usually a self obsorbed radical who uses the kids as human shields.

Whites cannot contribute to the dialogue because most blacks, excuse me african americans are infected with the same malignant hate and evil that gripped the Americas in the slave days. Even many of the AA speakers that claim to be conservative Christians, carry around a chip on their shoulder. They look to things that happened long before they were born for reason to discriminate against whites today. Having been on the receiving end of this discrimination, I am speaking from experience.

The problem is the article over simplifies, over generalize, and overlooks alot of issues. I went to public and private school in California and Private school in georgia trust me most kids dont have access to alot of technology such as skype. Also you couldnt even fit a third of the student population in a library. Alot of the books are out dated in public school also we need to look at our education sytem in general. Also the article should be entitled IF I WAS A POOR KID.

I have a friend of African-American descent who grew up on the mean streets of the urban inner city. He did dope on the streets until he was 40 years old - then he got clean and sober. When I first met him in '97 he couldn't read or write... since then he has overcome may of those problems, bought two houses, several vehicles, a boat, started and taken care of a family and is a leading contributor to the benefit of the community. He said the whole idea of the white keeping him down??? Was B.S.!

This is very interesting. Poor kids of any race have a chance in America. Those kids that decide to participate in learning (school) will succeed. Those kids that think they are entitled (because if they didn't believe they were entitled, they would know to learn so they can support themselves) will be failures. The school system will pass them along until the kid graduates, drops out or gets pregnant. It is amazing that immigrant kids learn and become doctors and professionals.

They existed for a long time, but have dramatically increased in frequency in the media in the past 15 years. Perhaps a media initiative to present a White parallel to the Black socio-economic condition. To mitigate racial contrasts in the public mind by artificially inflating the low-income white population ratio by increasing the frequency of the "White Trash" meme.
