Kippling pull ups are purely are variation to other pull ups, there are not right or wrong way. If you looking for high intensity keeping your heart rate up whilst banging out higher reps than possible with strict Ghent kipplng pull ups are a great variant! If you want beach muscles hat fatigue early with high intensity and doesn't get your heart rate up do strict. There's a reason why navy seals and fighters use Kipling pull ups, it's because it's higher intensity using your whole body!!! Doe
Haha this is an exercise? You people are dumb, enjoy the fucked up shoulders later on- Do pullups properly or dont do them at all, you look ridiculous and you're damaging your shoulders. Crossfit: Where looking stupid is the only exercise
You guys are all stupid. One of the main focuses of the kipping pull up is to be able to do more reps. Crossfit workouts require sets of 100 pull ups. No one is going to do 100 regular pull ups. Obviously, you shouldn't completely rule out regular pull ups. But it's all about being more efficient during your workout.
@ChefBoyardeeee I don't understand how it's a joke. You just explained what I meant. And try doing the kipping pull ups (correctly) and tell me it's a joke. I wasn't really too convinced about them when I first learned of them either until I started doing the workouts.
hey guys if you want to do 20 pull ups very easy and very fast go to 20pullups.blogspot.com and try my program/chalenge and let my now about your result.
Nice tutorial. Thanks. I am having a hard time locking my kipps together so they're more of one continuous motion rather than just the up and straight down.
I can't decide if I want to get into cross training or not. I feel like this version has some benefits, but not from a strength training standpoint. He says doing pull ups this way makes your lats and shoulders much stronger, but how can that be when your using momentum to pull you up? Real pullups are what i prefer....i think....cant decide. Thoughts?
@joshua12084 Try it, it can be brutal at times and its more an overall fitness regime. But don't let the haters stop you. Most have never tried it or can't cut it anyway.
BUT the kipping movement also gets more things involved. The problem is that kipping pull ups lend themselves to shoulder injury with over-extension so there has to be a lot of strength there to stabilize the upper body through the swing and in the direction change. The lower back and core needs to be strong enough to stabilize itself or you're again risking injury with the swing. Getting the movement down is tough but there needs to be more attention to doing this move safely.
Some would call me a purist, some would call me a fool, but I prefer to teach the pull up from dead weight IF POSSIBLE. The kip is a timing thing and without argument makes a pull up easier so I'll also teach people to use the kip to help get them over the bar; the goal, to me, is to be able to do clean, full pull ups. Are kipping pull ups cheating and not a real pull up? Of course not--do a bunch of them and tell me you aren't tired. They're just different. BUT... I have a BUT...
@ricardozs1983 great. Don't do them. Your unqualified bs opinion doesnt mean anything to me. Another person who has to be a cu nt everytime they sit at the computer...
I have never heard of "kipping pull-ups" until now and don't consider them a true pull-up. I am intrigued though and see that they do have a place in a well rounded fitness program. I'll be taking a closer look at them.
All of you morons who are saying the are not real pull-ups are creating a false dichotomy. It's not like doing kips are a strict replacement for old school pullups. They are a variation with a specific goal in mind. Just like traditional pushups and triangle pushups or hindu pushups or judo pushups or spiderman pushups. Mixing up your workouts makes them more fun and interesting and increases coordination while helping an athlete avoid plateaus.
if you do kipping pull ups youll have better how do you say... body coordination? youll understand more how the muscles of your body interact with themselves and create momentum... more body awareness
This exercise should not have "pull-up" in the name. HOWEVER, anybody saying this does not build strength has obviously not tried to workout with this exercise. I do pull-ups daily. One day, I decided to do Kippings for my workout. The next day, I was sore in muscles I had not felt in awhile. This builds strength, just different muscles. All the haters must be young and insecure. As you get older, you realize moving around is the important thing, whether or not its strict military form.
this the first time i've seen or heard of the kipping pull up, but looking at it, a normal pull up looks great for building over all power and strength, but the kipping pull up looks like its good for a more real world application!
Seems like you can't train your back muscles properly using so much momentum from the hips. To me it seems that this is a reckless workout that can hurt your shoulders in the long run. I'll stick with the traditional pull-ups, and do power cleans and other Olympic workouts if I want to focus on being 'explosive'.
@blackfoxmp5 It would seem that way, but I have personally had zero injuries doing CrossFit workouts. Traditional workouts were tearing up my shoulders, knees, and lower back while taking MUCH longer and getting a whole lot less done. All I can say is try it; find an instructor in your area and give it a shot for a couple of weeks. The increases to energy levels and functional strength should be pretty apparent by then. Good luck to you and be well.
its crazy how people who couldnt do pulls for a workout had to make up new names for them pullup=dead hang pull up by the way you shouldnt just be hanging there your shoulders should be tensed and lats flex your arms should be on the sides of your face
If you hate cross fit AND kipping, why on earth would you watch this video? Why would you waste a minute of your lives caring about what others do to get fit? Enjoy being angry and rude, it seems like thats the best thing a lot of you have going for
@mrmojodadog My Crossfit trainer served an Army tour in Afghanistan. Look up Crossfit Seal Training and post a video of yourself doing pullups of any kind.
@lettieriandrew or take someone who can do 20 dead hang pullups and make them do fifty. it doesnt matter how u do it noone cares if people want to do a kip let them thats theyre decision noone wants you opinion. if u didnt want to know how to do a kipping pullup then y did u watch this video. i guarentee you anyone whos done Crossfit for a month straight is in better shape than u.
I'm 13, 203lbs of SOLID, DRUG FREE STRENGTH and I can do almost 80 STRAIGHT pull ups in a row, no stop, perfect from, and at least I'm no cunt and sexist like Scooby is....
Great video, thanks for the help with my kipping pull ups! It's interesting to see how worked up some of the raging traditionalists get when it comes to Kipping vs Dead Hang and use it to try and use it to say how bad Crossfit is. Ignorance is bliss for them I guess.
So if this is was way of sustaining and increasing intensity why did u even say you can do this all day? Intensity is directly related with time, example when someone sprints at full speed no way can they sustain that high level of intensity for very long and have to slow down. I disagree with this flaying around on the bar, looks alot more like a great tendon workout. Now dont get me wrong your right alot of muscles are being worked and it is intense but your avoiding the intensity with body
@engcelot You can't do kipping pull ups all day. he was just saying that that kid is so in shape that he could do a lot of them. they wear you out just as much if not more than a regular pull up. kipping pull ups work some more muscles then regular pull ups. they are equally as intense and everything. i personally can't do many more kippins then i can deadhang.
Functional movements? What happens when you are climbing the side of el capitan.... I am pretty sure I am not going to jerk my legs while hanging on the side of a face... it is all arms, core, and balance.
Well, hopefully if you are rock climbing, you'll actually do exercises that are tuned for it. If you are trying to become a better basketball player, CrossFit wont replace dribbling practice.
CrossFit is just for all-around fitness. Kipping is a functional exercise fists the completive nature of their workouts. They could incorporate rock climbing/dead-hangs, but it would slow things down for their routines.
It's finny how people say this is a cheating pullup when they've never done a kipping pullup before. I used to only do dead hang, but I can say that doin these have increased my dead hang pullups from 22 to 47 straight
@wushugungfu I would love to see u do over 20 real full range motion full ups with no momentum, make a video of this and prove it how much do you weight?
@Dabidabida Yes, but we disciplined ourselves to do it more controlled to train the body no? He's using his whole body, and he's also cheating, what idiot says that's a controlled exercise? Anyone can fling their body around like a fish caught on a hook, what pisses me off is that they call this a proper exercise.. May as well do this for biceps curl, use your body weight to help curl the weight. Lol, Crossfit
@Cha0sLord93 This is for intensity and explosiveness. This is what fighers use in their circuit training. It's not something that originated in crossfit. We do strict pullups in straight training and kipping pullups in the intensity workouts where u compete in time. There is various ways of doing things and for different purposes. You are just showing and ignorant and naiv attitude alongside with so many others who's commenting here.
@Dabidabida The way this guy was swinging to get himself up looked like he was doing his shoulders alot of good, a controlled pull up is harder than a kipping pull up, at least admit that or you're an idiot, this is solely using momentum, I'd say 70% momentum, 30% actual effort, you may as well do the lat pulldown and lean all the way back to get the weight down, it's pretty much the same thing you're just using momentum. Like I said, with momentum, you can do anything. Lol, Crossfit.
@Dabidabida Ad Homenim. You're now attacking me because you have nothing to refute my argument with. Face it, crossfit is merely a lazy way to incorporate normal exercises, and cheat on them, then call it a 'crossfit exercise'. Lol, Crossfit
@Cha0sLord93 I have nothing to argue with? Fighters use kipping pullups. Coaches who train actors for movie casts use this. Just go to navyseals web page and you'll see crossfit workouts with kipping pullups. YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT. The only argument i see you use is the word momentum. "with momentum you can do anything". Your never going to be an athlete unless you train EXPLOSIVENESS. Explosive movements: Kipping pullups, olympic lifting, vertical jumps, sprinting, ball slamms, kb swings etc.
people are just ignorant, and have no idea until they experience it first hand and get humbled. while regular people like chaos will do 20 pull ups, while crossfitters do 100+ and get a full body workout + cardio and then be able to do that 20 strict afterwards...
let them be meatheads, while you can do EVERYTHING faster and better
@Cha0sLord93 Really? You must think that a power clean is just a "cheating" way of picking something up. Go to any professional athlete, and you will see them "cheating" with about everything they do. Kipping builds strength, power, and conditioning, as opposed to just strength. I can do more strict pullups than anyone else at my gym, by a wide margin, and I rarely do them.
I have an ESS degree from Texas Tech and i am an ACSM certified personal trainer. I have seen it again and again that people who practice movements involving the entire kinetic chain (kipping pull-ups) can generate much more explosive and practical movements in sports and real-life applications. They can also do dead hang pull ups without much coaching. People who have done nothing but controlled motion (dead hang pull-ups) have a hard time learning to be explosive. It takes a lot of recoaching.
@wazark It's cheating only if you are required to do dead lift pull-pus. If you are required to, or want to, do kipping pull-ups, then it is not cheating. Doing a different exercise is not cheating. It is just a different exercise.
@wazark Trust me, if you do these fast and explosive it's not cheating. It's intense. Your arms will feel more tired from this than just regular push-ups. When I had the space to do them I got bigger and stronger from them. The problem is it's hard to do if your on a doorway pull up.
@trecuck Not knocking them, but it's a harder workout to do a full deadhang pull/chin-up. Don't really do concentration curls in my routine atm. Stick to preacher curls, EZ curl bar and a few standing barbell curls for the biceps and I do a tri/bi split for recovery (I don't understand why some think it's a good idea to do tri's/bi's on the same day? surely you'd group chest/tri's together due to bench press and other overlapping compound exercises?)
@wazark Deadhang pullups are harder, I agree, but try doing 20 kipping pullups...you just improved your explosiveness, endurance AND you can feel your lats and shoulders burning. I prefer kipping pullups although I do both. As for the bi/tri stuff, I prefer doing 3-day full body routines, much more efficient than having a chest or arms day. That's my opinion, and most proffesional trainer's opinion. I prefer crossfitting nevertheless!! :D
@trecuck Indeed. As for the "most professional trainers opinion" bit... depends what you're doing. If you're trying to bulk/ strength training it is much, much better to do a tri/bi split and intensely work out each muscle group, allowing for recovery. Full body routines do not allow for a recovery period and thus do not add the mass/strength that the alternative does, however if you need to cut (lose fat) full body is the way to go, kinda.
Great vid, thanks man! It's funny with all the controversy, who cares, it's just another way to do pull ups! Part of my annual fitness test involves chin ups (palms facing you) something I've never been good at so I use a kipping style technique to get more reps in. Pisses some people off but I am following our "national training standard" of elbow lockout in bottom position and chin to bar in top. Then I watch others on the team doing "dead hang" chins and 90% don't lockout, but no complaints
Can anyone recommend a link to a good introduction program for people who want to get into crossfit? I have been training for 15 years doing the mainstream stuff (bench for chest, barbell curls for biceps, blah, blah, blah) but need to find a transitional program to prep myself for crossfit.
@tlabuscagne the best way to prepare for crossfit is to just get started. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and crossfit will find them all. Remember one of the main tenants of crossfit is the ability and requirement to scale workouts down to your level.
If you can, go to an affiliate- it's very beneficial especially when you are starting out. I did crossfit from home by myself for years, but didn't make real gains until I joined a gym.
I just started Crossfit and these workouts are ball busters. Period. Thank you very much for posting this, I am still in fundamentals and have not gotten to Kips yet.I laugh every time I see these critical posts, these folks should just find a Crossfit gym and try it themselves =)
Does it matter that someone might just find Crossfit fun? Who cares what physical activity people are doing, at least they are doing something. The world is getting more complacent and obese by the second. I was a college athlete (football and baseball) and always considered myself in good shape. But after I was finished playing ball, I hated going to a gym and "pumping iron". It was boring to me. But with crossfit and jujitsu, I found something I could enjoy while staying physically fit.
@Kinslow44 I would venture a guess that anything that's not sitting in front of a screen is gonna be beneficial to your health, why argue form if you're not going for bodybuilder (which most of us cannot achieve) and it's not actually harmful? Then again I'm by no means a picture of physical conditioning, but that lays to....working out being boring.
Finally, the proper way to do kipping pullups!! I've seen way too many people trying to do kipping pullups with their knees bent too high up. I think thats what people say its cheating when they see someone doing Kipping with knees too bent high on the Positive. These guys keep those knees at the lowest possible angle while swinging. Great form!!
The point of this is increased power output. Work over time. Of course you aren't going to train for dead hang pullups, but you will put out a lot more energy in the same amount of time. It's a different type of training and in my opinion more practical than dead hang, because if you're trying to pull yourself over an obstacle you're not just going to focus on upper body only, you're going to do what you need to in order to get over the obstacle.
Im not saying crossfit doesnt work. Any kind of activity will help you get in better shape and the intensity is definitely there in CrossFit. But giving a workout a time limit and trying to complete the workout in the shortest amount of time will always result in people finding the most efficient way of getting through the workout, and that is by cheating and making the prescribed exercises easier to do...also, trying to rush through an exercise using sufficient weight is a recipe for an injury
Giving a cheating pullup a fancy name and breaking it down and giving instructions on how to do it doesnt change the fact that you are cheating on doing a pullup.
@yonkersfugitive A dead hang pullup only works the biceps and back. A set of kipping pullup works almost every muscle in the body and is designed to be more of a cardio workout than pure strength.
ok i want to see you do pull ups under hand grip really slow ten seconds up and hold at top for ten seconds curling your knees to your chest then ten seconds down for 2min then lets talk about intensity :)
@MerkabaStar my dear, you obviously dont know what it takes to be licensed in NYS so i'll just nod my head to whatever you say. i actually have clients to take care of, which sounds like you have a lot of free time due to your intense amount of comments on youtube. keep fightin the good fight, godspeed.
@qtpa2t087 Hey that's great more power to you, I wish you well, I wish you a great happy successful practice. Doesn't mean diddly in the argument of sacrificing form and mechanics for the sake of time and reps.
@qtpa2t087 Oh shut up you're on here talking as much as I have. Sorry that you can't talk any science what so ever to support your opinions. Because there is none. So you just keep coming back with little shit to talk. Why can't you talk about how air squats are superior to normal squats and explain why or why kipping pull ups or fran is superior to any other random thought out obstacle course.
go shoot yourself in the foot. you're obviously dumb as rocks if you don't know what sarcasm is. and i don't 'palpitate' because that's what a heart does. and i do palpate hot discs that i have had to refer to surgeons because the NP finally bursts in the disc, but that's mostly due to people on the crapper and straining...
i have two degrees, as well, but clearly that doesn't mean anything, either, because you do too and you obviously don't know a whole lot.
SO how exactly do you practice not jumping off of bridges smart guy? All you have to do is understand that a kipping pull up is just another exercise. Love it or hate it, it's an exercise and like any other exercise it can be performed correctly rendering it SAFE or it can be performed incorrectly rendering it unsafe. Just remembered that you dismissed kettlebells, which proves your ignorance, so I'm done with this nonsense. On a final note, you have a strange obsession with the WII, Kid.
@boxingsmvp haha...a rounded back deadlift is just another exercise too, oh ignorant one. Look around, I'm not the only one saying this is a another dvd fad. And kettlebells are glorified dumbbells. Been around for hundreds of years but people are on the bandwagon now because they are made with shiny different colors. You probably don't know how to use them properly either. So just jump on the band wagon, jump off the bridge, and let me know if you're doing crossfit 10 years from now.
Are you kidding? A rounded back dead lift is NOT an exercise, its bad form. As for kettlebells, they are another tool, just like dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, etc. Kettlebells are great for improving power and conditioning, which seem to be two things you're afraid of. I teach a lot of my clients how to train with kettlebells. My question for you is if you hate on the kipping pull up and crossfit, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU LOOKING AT THE VIDEOS. YOU'RE A TOOL!
@boxingsmvp My point is that a kipping pullup is bad form, therefore, by your logic it's NOT an exercise then right? Tool...you can beat people over the head with tools. It's called improper use. Improving power is a function of strength. Period. Conditioning is not perpetual and if safety parameters are breached you're taking a step backwards. I clicked on the vid in the sidebar of another vid. Ya know, YOUTUBE , ya dunce! I saw the vid, thought it was shit, and said so.
@boxingsmvp And I bet you JUST STARTED using ketllebells too huh? That's called a fad! So it's not like I go around looking for things to talk shit about, but it's so prominent because trainers are a dime a dozen, certs are shit and mean absolutely squat, trainers don't stay up on their work and research. So why do you keep coming back? Like I said watch and see if you'll be doing crossfit 2 or 3 years from now! YOu'll either be tired of it or on to another fad.
Been using kettlebells for 3.5 years. CrossFit in some form or another will be part of my training until I can't workout anymore. Boxer for 12 years, professional for 7 & CrossFit training goes perfectly with it. I'm done with this, you're too dimwitted to understand what's effective training. Bet you're still a believer in long/slow/steady bouts of cardio. If we were in person, you would have been choking on your teeth a long time ago. Enjoy your lateral raises chump.
@boxingsmvp SS cardio has it's places, it depends on what the goals are. I'm also a believer in Hiit and what is does for translocation of glut 4 and other shit you have no clue about! And yes great. If you want to be a boxer and get pounded in the head then you need to train like a boxer does. go be one. And as usual, the ego minded macho fuck has to resort to some remark about violence in order to try to feel superior! do you club women over the head and drag them back to your cave to?
@boxingsmvp I don't do much independent shoulder work. I know it's hard for you to figure out. There are a few of us that know the basics of how the body works and use that science. Cross fit goes perfectly with shit like Boxing, i will give you that. It also goes well with things like service men. You know what else goes well with those things? Injury. Like I told the other chic, once you put safety as something besides the priority, you're not in my league anymore. You're doing ego work
@MerkabaStar you're clearly an idiot if you actually think i don't know what an impingement is. do you know what a plexus is? are we gonna have to get down to basics and ask each other what different terms mean? i, unlike you, had to actually take national and state exams in order to do what i do. so you passed tests that you didn't study for? whoop. i didn't study for my state boards and got a 95 outta 100, but that doesn't really mean anything right now, does it?
@qtpa2t087 hey you're the one who said you didn't know what impingement was. Don't try to come back now and make up for it. It's great that you know where nerve bundles are. You 'll know what to palpitate when you slip a disk trying to up your fran time. My point about passing without studying was to show that certs are worthless. I went to private school and have two degrees. All of that is water under the bridge. Do crossfit until you can't see straight. Safer equal alternatives exist
@MerkabaStar furthermore, i have SOOO much more extensive training with human anatomy, soft and hard tissue palpation, etc etc. sorry, but you can't really touch people. in fact, there's a fine line with you even stretching them. i have to undo all of the injuries that shitty trainers cause people. the only trainer i actually trust is a full believer in crossfit because it preaches form, so you're clearly misunderstood about what crossfit is. seriously, shut up. do some research, not even joking
@qtpa2t087 Great so you'll make one hell of a masseuse. doesn't mean squat about training hun. Sorry. If you really think that crossfit is superior training then you're lost! Simply. Lets talk about glut4, about leptin, cortisol, insulin resistance, shit that matters as to the reasons why you don't need to do this shit in order to achieve the same outcomes. Why cant you get it through your thick overmarketed skull that once you put safety second you have no freakin argument?
@MerkabaStar and don't think i didn't get your backhanded diss about being a 'masseuse'. i feel so sorry for you -- i really do. i feel like you have no idea what i know because LET'S talk about glut4, leptin, cortisol, insulin resistance, whatever you wanna talk about. what other proteins and hormones do you wanna talk about? i am confident in saying i know much more about the human body than you do. its ironic that my skull is 'thick' when you continue to say that crossfit is not about safety.
@qtpa2t087 it wasn't back handed. It was front handed! Because you think I'm supposed to give you props because you know where muscles and nerves connect. Big whoop. And yes Crossfit obviously takes safety as a secondary goal. That's my point. Otherwise they wouldve have you doing half of the shit they do. It's about feeding your ego and the typical need to feel like a "warrior", to be "intense" and other marketing bullshit. Go do some kettlebell swings or something.
@MerkabaStar bro there is a science behind crossfit. it's not the "feel" to be a warrior, it's all about working out your muscles while simultaneously getting a cardio workout. also, when you work out without any breaks your muscle tears more, which builds more muscle. the largest benefit about crossfit is the muscle endurance, which is why it has been adopted by mma, police, firemen, military, and a ton of other proffesions that require physical fitness.
@pimpsauce69 lol...muscle tears? You still think that's the key of building muscle? What about muscle tears combined with over taxing the CNS while on a caloric deficit? You're about15 years late if your argument is about muscle tears! Yes if you want maximal endurance do those things that push your endurance. And to seek maximal endurance for what? For your ego! There is no need for the average person to put safety as a second priority to achieve endurance or getting lean, period...
@MerkabaStar are you serious? hahahahaha!! "What about muscle tears combined with over taxing the CNS while on a caloric deficit?" how are you going to say that muscle tearing doesn't build muscle but than say it does as long as you recover and eat right?? lol you're an idiot. actually it's not for your ego its for your health. you sound like just one more fat, out-of-shape, underacheiver american making excuses to not work hard.good luck with that!
@pimpsauce69 Hey if you want to train to be in the military, firemen, police or mma or any other sport or job where people have to push themselves to their limits, or defend their lives, then you probably want to train in that capacity. It's a no brainer. Guess what, how many people DIE or get brutally inured in those fields or sports? As I mentioned before, are you going to tell a client to condition their shins too because some great mma fighters do!
@MerkabaStar WHAT? lol, yeah they do get killed but it's not crossfit that killed them! and how many average americans get killed or injured by living their lives normaly? if someone breaks into my house tonight i want to be able to defend my family. so if you are so worried about safety than maybe you should pick up crossfit and stop being such a pussy that thinks crossfit is dangerous. because a soldier would have a better chance at surviving than you if you were caught in a bad situation!
@pimpsauce69 Science is behind everything. The body works in one way. Period. You can do all the shit in the world as you work your way around it. Part of the marketing is that fighters and policemen and mma fighters do it! They also get injured and killed. You know who doesn't get injured and killed, people who don't push their bodies to the max in order to achieve a change in body composition. To do so is sophomoric and outdated.
@MerkabaStar are you serious? hahahahaha!! "What about muscle tears combined with over taxing the CNS while on a caloric deficit?" how are you going to say that muscle tearing doesn't build muscle but than say it does as long as you recover and eat right?? lol you're an idiot. actually it's not for your ego its for your health. you sound like just another underacheiver trying to make excuses to not work hard.
@pimpsauce69 hey dumbo, I said if your arguing point is about muscle tearing then you're a moron. Period. It's not about working hard, but working smart for what you're trying to accomplish. Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more, it depends on the client and their goals and where they are in the cycle. Quit assuming shit in your typical response and talk about something of substance or quit embarrassing yourself.
@MerkabaStar dumbo!? lol good one man i that hurt hahaha!! bottome line is the muscle grows by tearing!! if your muscle doesn't tear than it wont grow! and obviously there are other factors but when it comes to working out all that matters is that you tear it. you can recover and eat later! get that through your head! it is about working hard, all the best athletes pride themselves in hard work, and incase you don't know, they have the best MDs and trainers in the business working on them!
@MerkabaStar oh and if you think i'm embarrassing myself that's funny, because incase you haven't figured it out yet everybody who has replied to one of your post thinks you're retarted. and you're not proving them wrong. some of the shit you say is so dumb, how could you not think that muscle tearing builds muscle?? lol go post on some how to be a bitch video where people will actually agree with you! lol

I'd only kip pullup for upperbody endurance/cardiovascular workout.
Kips don't use more muscle. Pullups + Weight are better strength/mass builder. And "intensity" is usually defined as, increase weight on the bar.

Cha0sLord93 2 months ago
You guys are all stupid. One of the main focuses of the kipping pull up is to be able to do more reps. Crossfit workouts require sets of 100 pull ups. No one is going to do 100 regular pull ups. Obviously, you shouldn't completely rule out regular pull ups. But it's all about being more efficient during your workout.

@ChefBoyardeeee I don't understand how it's a joke. You just explained what I meant. And try doing the kipping pull ups (correctly) and tell me it's a joke. I wasn't really too convinced about them when I first learned of them either until I started doing the workouts.

Thoughts?

BUT the kipping movement also gets more things involved. The problem is that kipping pull ups lend themselves to shoulder injury with over-extension so there has to be a lot of strength there to stabilize the upper body through the swing and in the direction change. The lower back and core needs to be strong enough to stabilize itself or you're again risking injury with the swing. Getting the movement down is tough but there needs to be more attention to doing this move safely.
vincenthowie 2 months ago
Some would call me a purist, some would call me a fool, but I prefer to teach the pull up from dead weight IF POSSIBLE. The kip is a timing thing and without argument makes a pull up easier so I'll also teach people to use the kip to help get them over the bar; the goal, to me, is to be able to do clean, full pull ups. Are kipping pull ups cheating and not a real pull up? Of course not--do a bunch of them and tell me you aren't tired. They're just different. BUT... I have a BUT...

No one said that you shouldn't do regular pullup

This exercise should not have "pull-up" in the name. HOWEVER, anybody saying this does not build strength has obviously not tried to workout with this exercise. I do pull-ups daily. One day, I decided to do Kippings for my workout. The next day, I was sore in muscles I had not felt in awhile. This builds strength, just different muscles. All the haters must be young and insecure. As you get older, you realize moving around is the important thing, whether or not its strict military form.

Seems like you can't train your back muscles properly using so much momentum from the hips. To me it seems that this is a reckless workout that can hurt your shoulders in the long run. I'll stick with the traditional pull-ups, and do power cleans and other Olympic workouts if I want to focus on being 'explosive'.
blackfoxmp5 6 months ago
@blackfoxmp5 It would seem that way, but I have personally had zero injuries doing CrossFit workouts. Traditional workouts were tearing up my shoulders, knees, and lower back while taking MUCH longer and getting a whole lot less done. All I can say is try it; find an instructor in your area and give it a shot for a couple of weeks. The increases to energy levels and functional strength should be pretty apparent by then. Good luck to you and be well.

ElephantRage 8 months ago
So if this is was way of sustaining and increasing intensity why did u even say you can do this all day? Intensity is directly related with time, example when someone sprints at full speed no way can they sustain that high level of intensity for very long and have to slow down. I disagree with this flaying around on the bar, looks alot more like a great tendon workout. Now dont get me wrong your right alot of muscles are being worked and it is intense but your avoiding the intensity with body
engcelot 9 months ago
@engcelot You can't do kipping pull ups all day. he was just saying that that kid is so in shape that he could do a lot of them. they wear you out just as much if not more than a regular pull up. kipping pull ups work some more muscles then regular pull ups. they are equally as intense and everything. i personally can't do many more kippins then i can deadhang.
tjack2themax527 9 months ago
@engcelot
yes it is a great tendon workout. the kipping movement equates to the movement of olympic lifts

Functional movements? What happens when you are climbing the side of el capitan.... I am pretty sure I am not going to jerk my legs while hanging on the side of a face... it is all arms, core, and balance.
BeepimajeepBeep 8 months ago
@BeepimajeepBeep

Cha0sLord93 9 months ago
@Cha0sLord93 Go watch how they trained for the 300 movie. Wow kipping pullups! Intensity workout?!
Kipping pullup is just a natural movement. This is how our species have gotten from tree to tree for millions of years.
Dabidabida 8 months ago
@Dabidabida Yes, but we disciplined ourselves to do it more controlled to train the body no? He's using his whole body, and he's also cheating, what idiot says that's a controlled exercise? Anyone can fling their body around like a fish caught on a hook, what pisses me off is that they call this a proper exercise.. May as well do this for biceps curl, use your body weight to help curl the weight. Lol, Crossfit
Cha0sLord93 8 months ago
@Cha0sLord93 This is for intensity and explosiveness. This is what fighers use in their circuit training. It's not something that originated in crossfit. We do strict pullups in straight training and kipping pullups in the intensity workouts where u compete in time. There is various ways of doing things and for different purposes. You are just showing and ignorant and naiv attitude alongside with so many others who's commenting here.
Dabidabida 8 months ago
@Dabidabida The way this guy was swinging to get himself up looked like he was doing his shoulders alot of good, a controlled pull up is harder than a kipping pull up, at least admit that or you're an idiot, this is solely using momentum, I'd say 70% momentum, 30% actual effort, you may as well do the lat pulldown and lean all the way back to get the weight down, it's pretty much the same thing you're just using momentum. Like I said, with momentum, you can do anything. Lol, Crossfit.
Cha0sLord93 8 months ago
@Cha0sLord93 well congratulations, you have no idea what your talking about
Dabidabida 8 months ago
@Dabidabida Ad Homenim. You're now attacking me because you have nothing to refute my argument with. Face it, crossfit is merely a lazy way to incorporate normal exercises, and cheat on them, then call it a 'crossfit exercise'. Lol, Crossfit
Cha0sLord93 8 months ago
@Cha0sLord93 I have nothing to argue with? Fighters use kipping pullups. Coaches who train actors for movie casts use this. Just go to navyseals web page and you'll see crossfit workouts with kipping pullups. YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT. The only argument i see you use is the word momentum. "with momentum you can do anything". Your never going to be an athlete unless you train EXPLOSIVENESS. Explosive movements: Kipping pullups, olympic lifting, vertical jumps, sprinting, ball slamms, kb swings etc.
Dabidabida 8 months ago 8
@Dabidabida
people are just ignorant, and have no idea until they experience it first hand and get humbled. while regular people like chaos will do 20 pull ups, while crossfitters do 100+ and get a full body workout + cardio and then be able to do that 20 strict afterwards...
let them be meatheads, while you can do EVERYTHING faster and better
jackiechan07 8 months ago
@Cha0sLord93 Really? You must think that a power clean is just a "cheating" way of picking something up. Go to any professional athlete, and you will see them "cheating" with about everything they do. Kipping builds strength, power, and conditioning, as opposed to just strength. I can do more strict pullups than anyone else at my gym, by a wide margin, and I rarely do them.
tywonellington 8 months ago
Can you take your shirt off next time? Thanks (:
iluvrimmel 9 months ago
I have an ESS degree from Texas Tech and i am an ACSM certified personal trainer. I have seen it again and again that people who practice movements involving the entire kinetic chain (kipping pull-ups) can generate much more explosive and practical movements in sports and real-life applications. They can also do dead hang pull ups without much coaching. People who have done nothing but controlled motion (dead hang pull-ups) have a hard time learning to be explosive. It takes a lot of recoaching.

that's cheating
wazark 10 months ago
@wazark It's cheating only if you are required to do dead lift pull-pus. If you are required to, or want to, do kipping pull-ups, then it is not cheating. Doing a different exercise is not cheating. It is just a different exercise.
BenDoverPls 9 months ago
@BenDoverPls Indeed. But inventing a different, easier exercise, is just poor :P
wazark 9 months ago
@wazark Trust me, if you do these fast and explosive it's not cheating. It's intense. Your arms will feel more tired from this than just regular push-ups. When I had the space to do them I got bigger and stronger from them. The problem is it's hard to do if your on a doorway pull up.
rashb 9 months ago
@wazark easier? try them instead of doing so many concentration curls
trecuck 9 months ago
@trecuck Not knocking them, but it's a harder workout to do a full deadhang pull/chin-up. Don't really do concentration curls in my routine atm. Stick to preacher curls, EZ curl bar and a few standing barbell curls for the biceps and I do a tri/bi split for recovery (I don't understand why some think it's a good idea to do tri's/bi's on the same day? surely you'd group chest/tri's together due to bench press and other overlapping compound exercises?)
wazark 9 months ago
@wazark Deadhang pullups are harder, I agree, but try doing 20 kipping pullups...you just improved your explosiveness, endurance AND you can feel your lats and shoulders burning. I prefer kipping pullups although I do both. As for the bi/tri stuff, I prefer doing 3-day full body routines, much more efficient than having a chest or arms day. That's my opinion, and most proffesional trainer's opinion. I prefer crossfitting nevertheless!! :D
trecuck 9 months ago
@trecuck Indeed. As for the "most professional trainers opinion" bit... depends what you're doing. If you're trying to bulk/ strength training it is much, much better to do a tri/bi split and intensely work out each muscle group, allowing for recovery. Full body routines do not allow for a recovery period and thus do not add the mass/strength that the alternative does, however if you need to cut (lose fat) full body is the way to go, kinda.
wazark 9 months ago
Great vid, thanks man! It's funny with all the controversy, who cares, it's just another way to do pull ups! Part of my annual fitness test involves chin ups (palms facing you) something I've never been good at so I use a kipping style technique to get more reps in. Pisses some people off but I am following our "national training standard" of elbow lockout in bottom position and chin to bar in top. Then I watch others on the team doing "dead hang" chins and 90% don't lockout, but no complaints

Can anyone recommend a link to a good introduction program for people who want to get into crossfit? I have been training for 15 years doing the mainstream stuff (bench for chest, barbell curls for biceps, blah, blah, blah) but need to find a transitional program to prep myself for crossfit.
tlabuscagne 10 months ago
@tlabuscagne the best way to prepare for crossfit is to just get started. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and crossfit will find them all. Remember one of the main tenants of crossfit is the ability and requirement to scale workouts down to your level.
If you can, go to an affiliate- it's very beneficial especially when you are starting out. I did crossfit from home by myself for years, but didn't make real gains until I joined a gym.
gourdbox 10 months ago

airtexaco 10 months ago
Does it matter that someone might just find Crossfit fun? Who cares what physical activity people are doing, at least they are doing something. The world is getting more complacent and obese by the second. I was a college athlete (football and baseball) and always considered myself in good shape. But after I was finished playing ball, I hated going to a gym and "pumping iron". It was boring to me. But with crossfit and jujitsu, I found something I could enjoy while staying physically fit.
Kinslow44 11 months ago 37
@Kinslow44 I would venture a guess that anything that's not sitting in front of a screen is gonna be beneficial to your health, why argue form if you're not going for bodybuilder (which most of us cannot achieve) and it's not actually harmful? Then again I'm by no means a picture of physical conditioning, but that lays to....working out being boring.

brandonleetran 11 months ago
Finally, the proper way to do kipping pullups!! I've seen way too many people trying to do kipping pullups with their knees bent too high up. I think thats what people say its cheating when they see someone doing Kipping with knees too bent high on the Positive. These guys keep those knees at the lowest possible angle while swinging. Great form!!
flipbulance 1 year ago
The point of this is increased power output. Work over time. Of course you aren't going to train for dead hang pullups, but you will put out a lot more energy in the same amount of time. It's a different type of training and in my opinion more practical than dead hang, because if you're trying to pull yourself over an obstacle you're not just going to focus on upper body only, you're going to do what you need to in order to get over the obstacle.
Narbification 1 year ago

Although I greatly prefer dead hang pullups, this video was very well covered on kipping pullups. Good job guys!
RACISTASSHOLE 1 year ago
SO how exactly do you practice not jumping off of bridges smart guy? All you have to do is understand that a kipping pull up is just another exercise. Love it or hate it, it's an exercise and like any other exercise it can be performed correctly rendering it SAFE or it can be performed incorrectly rendering it unsafe. Just remembered that you dismissed kettlebells, which proves your ignorance, so I'm done with this nonsense. On a final note, you have a strange obsession with the WII, Kid.
boxingsmvp 1 year ago
@boxingsmvp haha...a rounded back deadlift is just another exercise too, oh ignorant one. Look around, I'm not the only one saying this is a another dvd fad. And kettlebells are glorified dumbbells. Been around for hundreds of years but people are on the bandwagon now because they are made with shiny different colors. You probably don't know how to use them properly either. So just jump on the band wagon, jump off the bridge, and let me know if you're doing crossfit 10 years from now.
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar
YOU'RE A TOOL!
boxingsmvp 1 year ago
@boxingsmvp My point is that a kipping pullup is bad form, therefore, by your logic it's NOT an exercise then right? Tool...you can beat people over the head with tools. It's called improper use. Improving power is a function of strength. Period. Conditioning is not perpetual and if safety parameters are breached you're taking a step backwards. I clicked on the vid in the sidebar of another vid. Ya know, YOUTUBE , ya dunce! I saw the vid, thought it was shit, and said so.

@MerkabaStar
Enjoy your lateral raises chump.
boxingsmvp 1 year ago
@boxingsmvp SS cardio has it's places, it depends on what the goals are. I'm also a believer in Hiit and what is does for translocation of glut 4 and other shit you have no clue about! And yes great. If you want to be a boxer and get pounded in the head then you need to train like a boxer does. go be one. And as usual, the ego minded macho fuck has to resort to some remark about violence in order to try to feel superior! do you club women over the head and drag them back to your cave to?
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@boxingsmvp I don't do much independent shoulder work. I know it's hard for you to figure out. There are a few of us that know the basics of how the body works and use that science. Cross fit goes perfectly with shit like Boxing, i will give you that. It also goes well with things like service men. You know what else goes well with those things? Injury. Like I told the other chic, once you put safety as something besides the priority, you're not in my league anymore. You're doing ego work
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar you're clearly an idiot if you actually think i don't know what an impingement is. do you know what a plexus is? are we gonna have to get down to basics and ask each other what different terms mean? i, unlike you, had to actually take national and state exams in order to do what i do. so you passed tests that you didn't study for? whoop. i didn't study for my state boards and got a 95 outta 100, but that doesn't really mean anything right now, does it?
qtpa2t087 1 year ago
@qtpa2t087 hey you're the one who said you didn't know what impingement was. Don't try to come back now and make up for it. It's great that you know where nerve bundles are. You 'll know what to palpitate when you slip a disk trying to up your fran time. My point about passing without studying was to show that certs are worthless. I went to private school and have two degrees. All of that is water under the bridge. Do crossfit until you can't see straight. Safer equal alternatives exist
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar furthermore, i have SOOO much more extensive training with human anatomy, soft and hard tissue palpation, etc etc. sorry, but you can't really touch people. in fact, there's a fine line with you even stretching them. i have to undo all of the injuries that shitty trainers cause people. the only trainer i actually trust is a full believer in crossfit because it preaches form, so you're clearly misunderstood about what crossfit is. seriously, shut up. do some research, not even joking
qtpa2t087 1 year ago
@qtpa2t087 Great so you'll make one hell of a masseuse. doesn't mean squat about training hun. Sorry. If you really think that crossfit is superior training then you're lost! Simply. Lets talk about glut4, about leptin, cortisol, insulin resistance, shit that matters as to the reasons why you don't need to do this shit in order to achieve the same outcomes. Why cant you get it through your thick overmarketed skull that once you put safety second you have no freakin argument?
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar and don't think i didn't get your backhanded diss about being a 'masseuse'. i feel so sorry for you -- i really do. i feel like you have no idea what i know because LET'S talk about glut4, leptin, cortisol, insulin resistance, whatever you wanna talk about. what other proteins and hormones do you wanna talk about? i am confident in saying i know much more about the human body than you do. its ironic that my skull is 'thick' when you continue to say that crossfit is not about safety.
qtpa2t087 1 year ago
@qtpa2t087 it wasn't back handed. It was front handed! Because you think I'm supposed to give you props because you know where muscles and nerves connect. Big whoop. And yes Crossfit obviously takes safety as a secondary goal. That's my point. Otherwise they wouldve have you doing half of the shit they do. It's about feeding your ego and the typical need to feel like a "warrior", to be "intense" and other marketing bullshit. Go do some kettlebell swings or something.
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar bro there is a science behind crossfit. it's not the "feel" to be a warrior, it's all about working out your muscles while simultaneously getting a cardio workout. also, when you work out without any breaks your muscle tears more, which builds more muscle. the largest benefit about crossfit is the muscle endurance, which is why it has been adopted by mma, police, firemen, military, and a ton of other proffesions that require physical fitness.
pimpsauce69 1 year ago
@pimpsauce69 lol...muscle tears? You still think that's the key of building muscle? What about muscle tears combined with over taxing the CNS while on a caloric deficit? You're about15 years late if your argument is about muscle tears! Yes if you want maximal endurance do those things that push your endurance. And to seek maximal endurance for what? For your ego! There is no need for the average person to put safety as a second priority to achieve endurance or getting lean, period...
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar are you serious? hahahahaha!! "What about muscle tears combined with over taxing the CNS while on a caloric deficit?" how are you going to say that muscle tearing doesn't build muscle but than say it does as long as you recover and eat right?? lol you're an idiot. actually it's not for your ego its for your health. you sound like just one more fat, out-of-shape, underacheiver american making excuses to not work hard.good luck with that!
pimpsauce69 1 year ago
@pimpsauce69 Hey if you want to train to be in the military, firemen, police or mma or any other sport or job where people have to push themselves to their limits, or defend their lives, then you probably want to train in that capacity. It's a no brainer. Guess what, how many people DIE or get brutally inured in those fields or sports? As I mentioned before, are you going to tell a client to condition their shins too because some great mma fighters do!
MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar WHAT? lol, yeah they do get killed but it's not crossfit that killed them! and how many average americans get killed or injured by living their lives normaly? if someone breaks into my house tonight i want to be able to defend my family. so if you are so worried about safety than maybe you should pick up crossfit and stop being such a pussy that thinks crossfit is dangerous. because a soldier would have a better chance at surviving than you if you were caught in a bad situation!
pimpsauce69 1 year ago
@pimpsauce69 Science is behind everything. The body works in one way. Period. You can do all the shit in the world as you work your way around it. Part of the marketing is that fighters and policemen and mma fighters do it! They also get injured and killed. You know who doesn't get injured and killed, people who don't push their bodies to the max in order to achieve a change in body composition. To do so is sophomoric and outdated.

MerkabaStar 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar dumbo!? lol good one man i that hurt hahaha!! bottome line is the muscle grows by tearing!! if your muscle doesn't tear than it wont grow! and obviously there are other factors but when it comes to working out all that matters is that you tear it. you can recover and eat later! get that through your head! it is about working hard, all the best athletes pride themselves in hard work, and incase you don't know, they have the best MDs and trainers in the business working on them!
pimpsauce69 1 year ago
@MerkabaStar oh and if you think i'm embarrassing myself that's funny, because incase you haven't figured it out yet everybody who has replied to one of your post thinks you're retarted. and you're not proving them wrong. some of the shit you say is so dumb, how could you not think that muscle tearing builds muscle?? lol go post on some how to be a bitch video where people will actually agree with you! lol
