I live here, the legend actually is that the police officer was hired to patrol the tunnel that leads from the candy kitchen (near the river) to the pirate house so that no illegal activity was going on there, and he got forced into service. Same story, different versions I suppose.

I take a group to there every year, our favorite part is touring the cellar.
