@2012nimrod Ha thanks! Actually it was buying the EastWest pianos and being quite disappointed that led me to create something better. Check out my other videos for hints of what's coming next (and soon).
This really does sound amazing (even compressed audio). What do you think the difference is between your recordings and other sample libraries? Recording methods? Instrument?
@kamotzboyz Yes the Kawai pianos are quite nice, especially the EX concert grand! Please check out more demos on our website, and visit my channel to see/hear the completed piano.
@feelsallright Exactly, it's a digitally reproduced sound thus more portable, more affordable, etc. Of course I love a real (good) piano. But when I don't have access to one, especially a great recording instrument in a great room, the digitized version becomes very appealing.
Ever consider mounting speakers on an iron frame? I have a couple of old magnapan smga speakers speakers that I have considered putting on my organs, but I wonder how a digitally sampled piano would sound through those speakers.
I found my Magnapan speakers in someones garbage about 8 years ago. A buddy said, ' don't stop for those old office partitions'. I said, Look! They have fuses on them- those are Magnaplanar speakers!'
Great for small rooms- sound like spk's set farther back and cranked!
I was listening to an ex pro demo song on AcousticsampleS's website and about 30 seconds into it I completely forgot I was listening to a "digital" performance. I think I just found what I want for Christmas. Great stuff Lance. I share your dismay over the lack of resonance found in most piano samples. Hopefully this software will end my search for that perfect piano sound :D I'll be playing them on a $25 kawai midi controller I found at a garage sale haha.
@betterfilmmaking Thanks so much for the compliments! Yes that was one of my leading motivators for creating a better piano sound: the lack of body and resonance. While many others offer a technically superb sound, they leave out the essential characteristics that gives the real piano its resonance. I hope you enjoy it! And stay tuned... big things are coming soon.
sounds awesome. Just about to purchase a digital grand piano in the 10-12G budget range and am trying to do my diligent research. Love the sounds you make! I don't quite understand how it all works though since it'll be my 1st one. Do you have any recommendations as to which digi grand piano is preferable? Kawai, Roland, Kurzweil, Yamaha? Also to get these sounds you make do you just put a flash drive right into the piano? I normally play acoustic. Is it pricy? Any help would be great! tx
@cimpox You can use it with just about any DAW, but the library is designed for Kontakt 3.5 and up. You have to have the full version of Kontakt installed, or you can use their free Kontakt Player, but it'll only run for 30 minutes at a time. The EXS version of the Kawai is available soon, but it's not nearly as cool as the original Kontakt version!
Great job! It really has the bark of a D in the low end. And the fullness in the mid and upper end too.
I worked for a steinway dealer for several years and played on a D often. As long as it's voiced/regulated/tuned and pampered, there's nothing like a NY D or even a Hamburg.
I would have liked to see the process. Thanks for your talent and skills.
The Steinway was released back in June, and the Kawai was released in October. Check out my other videos on here for more information. Thanks for the interest!
Hello, I am writing from Italy, I am going to buy a Kawai MP5 and I like to use your sampler (I love the first sound). Can you tell me please what is the cost for them? And send in Italy?
The Steinway sound is ready! Check out the two new videos I made that demonstrate all that the instrument can do. And for those interested in the Kawai, it will be out very soon as well!
The Steinway piano is just about ready! The Kawai will follow very soon and will hopefully be ready in the next month or so. Both will be in Gigastudio and Kontakt 2 and 3 formats, but we're working on getting the Kontakt sampling engine included for those that don't already own Kontakt.
@lancemgy I'm about to buy a stage piano. Is there one that can use your Steinway sound without the use of an external computer? I guess not but I thought I'd ask...
Si ese teclado tiene un salida midi, sería conectarlo a un computador que use una SoundBlaster por ejemplo, y la SoundBlaster cargarle un archivo SF2(soundfont) con muestras de sonido de un piano real.
Thanks for the video. I've been using samplers & Gigastudio for years now, and recently sampled some fantastic Sabian 10" mini hi-hats. This week I began sampling a HAPI Drum, which is a unique chromatic percussion instrument played with either mallets or fingers.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! that's amazing. Great work man, it's just an absolutely prestine sound. What kind of keyboard do you need to load your piano sound? Please let me know, because I think it would be far less expensive than buying a steinway grand. I want that sound :D Thanks again.
Thanks! I think it helps to have someone that's a musician first/engineer second design a piano sound like this. They will be available to the world very soon!
Pianoteq is very responsive and tweakable but it doesn't sound like a real piano no matter what settings you use...I've tried it and it just doesn't sound good. The Academic Grand, however, is just amazing. I think Lance really knows how to sample pianos like no other.
It sounds great when you know what you're doing, and when you connect it to a good MIDI controller. Of course, the most important thing is to set the velocity curve appropriately. It sounds very much like a real grand, more than any sample library I've ever used, and responsiveness is really defeating sample libraries by far. It also just keeps getting better.
Pianoteq is better than a lot of sampled pianos whose dynamic range and responsiveness is often ridicilous. But just listen to this video...the Academic Grand and the Kawai sound so much better than Pianoteq - no contest at all ! And in terms of playability Acoustic Samples is fantastic, I know it because I use their stuff !!

I imagine quantum leap piano was recorded in a small studio, vs the kawai which sounds like it's picking up lots of room ambience.

"I finally got the piano finished in Gigastudio (only to find out Tascam was abandoning the software totally)"
no matter what happens to the original proprietary software, the Gigastudio format will live...
You should check out linuxsampler (a cross platform software, inspite of the name). It's a very capable sampler and it's free/libre software.
It supports Gigastudio format extremely well and the project is very much alive.
