They could have ended it with roger taking the "love potion" himself making the "glove cleaner" NOT "the only way" because he was the one to cause lila to act like that, so does it really make sense for him to kill her even though she is doing what he caused?
This is a clever dramatic story but what I don't like is it's a mockery of love. It doesn't have to be either bitchood or else mindless adoration, lots of couples have real love and it transitions into family life just fine, that has been working for thousands of years and there's no need for re-examination of it or messing with the natural course of it. This story seems like a "feminist" theme designed to pervert men's desire for a loving wife, to educate women to become unloving spite-bitches.
@malamagr Not really that. Theres a lot of people who fall in love with people who act the same way as her in the beginning and just as many people who have someone fall in like crazy love with them. The theme is just that love isnt always perfect you people should jump into it like a cocker-spaniel.
@crappymatt Actually dude, I don't think it's anything that sexist or contrived. We saw how the girl just plain wasn't into Roger, and in turn the good doctor was purely disappointed that Roger wanted to pursue a proven lost cause. Simply put, if two people share no chemistry, then not even turning a cold fish into a hot tart will make you happy. It's just a small lesson in not losing your soul for one snobby bitch. If she's not the one, there's millions of other girls out there to fall for.
Actually, if you Wiki "rabbit test" the rabbit ALWAYS dies since you have to kill and open the rabbit to inspect for reactions to the injected urine BUT I wonder if it came about because, try not to get too angry now , when she becomes pregnant the good times are over for everyone! Hence "the rabbit dies' is metaphor for... no more long romantic nights or sports cars or quiet walks in the park or....!! Way to go Rod!
I love that he told him what it would do, that it wouldn't make his happy and he didn't listen. There's no horrible catch he left out, He just said, 'this is what it will do and you won't like it."
Rod Serling was a great social commentator. Take away the love potion and you still have a typical story - passionate young man gets girl, romance becomes tedious, ends up married with children.
@carlsetzer He *is* actually saying "glove cleaner," not "love cleaner." Apparently in the original short story it was made more clear that it was actually a poison. Here it's more ambiguous, although if it's deadly that would explain why you wouldn't want to use a partial dosage.
@silverfox42 Thanks, a few have been mentioning that it is "glove". I just thought it was a glottal glitch that produced an extra 'guh' sound in front of 'love'. Your explanation makes it clear.
@itachi10693 Back before you peed on a stick to find out if you were pregnant you peed in a cup. They then injected the urine into a rabbit. If the rabbit lives, you are not pregnant. If you are pregnant the rabbit dies.
hey, he did that on purpose, that old man, saying 1000 bucks for that stupid cleaner, knowing in the beginning that that love potion would have a negative effect on him, that bastard. what is he trying to say that love is cheap.
