I understand that rats are truly wonderful and respectful creatures but this is the circle of life. Cats eat mice, birds and other types of rodents naturally. It is the reason they have sharp incisor teeth to tear meat. They did not subject the rat to some strange, unnatural torture. It's very scary to be invaded by possibly diseased ridden rodents and they did the most natural thing they could think of. Let the cat take care of it! And, I must say he is very cute and he did a very good job
