It has been my experience that most of these armchair QB's are textbook firefighter's and think that everything is done by the book they do not know what real firefighting is all about. We have some guy's like this at our department and they are not worth a shit out there on the scene.
I spent 12 years at the HFD before moving on. Ive shared blood, seat, and tears with all those guys. 2 man fire companies, crappy spare rigs, old SCBA, at times the bat. chief had to ride the seat of the quint at station 1..sometimes the chief even had to make the hydrant!
There are some damn good FFs on that job. They only have so much to work with, and do the best job they can.
wyleek09 Your right it did look like it could have flashover. They were right not to put firefighters in this house. It looks to me like the fire had a good headstart before they got there. The only thing I seen wrong was the white hat and the red hat at the front door without scba on. If the fire would have flashed at this point they would have gotten burned. GOOD JOB HOBART FIRE DEPT.
from reading the smoke u can tell that the front was about to flash and fire was starting in the void space. but newark fire would of had a line in the front door so once we vented a line would of been knocking the fire down in stead of spreading across like it did.. but for the most part it was a ok job.
It's easy to judge another dept. by a video that didn't show the whole timeline or all four sides of the structure. The first due crew made an interior attack right away before it got unsafe to be in. Second the roof was vented properly as soon as it was possible. There were a lot of factors balloon construction, several room additions, fire in half the lower level and already to the attic before arrival and no access to the second floor by the stairs.
No one should criticize any other department unless you know all the facts. What are the constraints placed on them by city management, does the fire administration have no clue is the town poor. Know this info and maybe you can comment. These guys to the best they can with what is givn to them. as for volunteer no paid guy wants to share job with somoone whod does not get paid whay would you. not that volunteers are bad just against paid guys and unions of any kind
This is awful. My teacher is related to them. We are getting them sippie cups, diapers, clothes, blankets and anything we can. Let's worry about the family, not the fire dept.
I know who lives there. :/ It was my cousin's wife's sister, Sarah. We found out about what happened after we left my grandmother's. It was very sad. :( I hope they're okay!
But it is so much easier to form an opinion from ten minutes of video and chances are the armchair QB's have no clue about Hobart's under staffing or the fact that the city at 26 square miles only has I think 3 engines and a tanker for suppression running at all times.
WELL SAID! Know nothing about the department or the other pressing issues on the scene, yet they feel free to pick at everything that might or could have been done differently...
No, it is in response to all the people who are not from here and want to shoot their mouths off about how the scene should have been run. The people who base an opinion on an entire department from one 10 minute video. I find that incredibly annoying!
PPV is a good tactic, just no one knows how to PROPERLY execute it. As far as the windows, there are differing schools of thought on them, you want to hear them, message me. It takes manpower to properly work a 2.5, see other comments by mabas re that. Can I see a video of your department and pick at everything I see screwed up????
If all we ever did was look at videos and say "Wow, good job" nobody would ever learn anything. There's a lot of young firefighters out there looking at these- they need to know that just because it's on the interwebs doesn't mean that's how it should be done.
@mabas21 ok then the should take fire engins off and move the man power so they can staff a engine or truck or work something out 2 also have volunteers run along side payed guys
I somewhat agree, the problem is Hobart is around 26 square miles covering 1 major highway and a major shopping area including a mall. They only have 4 engines, 2 ambulances, a tanker, and a quint. They can't shut down equipment due to response times, but the volunteer issue is a good idea. Who knows what they will do
They could call for mutual aid everytime they have a fire, piss off the surrounding towns so then they have to John Wayne every fire...then there would be less of a reason to justify the budget cuts...
They dont John wayne because they want to. Surrounding departments have stated they will not come and also have told them they are not going to call hobart. Why would 1 department call another that will not return the favor
(Happy valintine's day honey, but i have to tell you are house caught fire) that suck!D:

You post a vid on the tube, you take your chances. You're wide open to criticism.
Windows are our friends. Why were they breaking them?
They lend vertical support. They keep needed oxygen from the hungry fire.
You break them to let out the hot, or to allow the ingress of suppressant, usual water. You should knock them out to feed the flames.
This house could have been saved with five guys and two engines.

I love the video. Does Hobart have a Ladder or access to one via mutual aid or auto aid?

1. This fire is further proof- as if we needed any more- that PPV should be illegal during active firefighting.
2. If you're going to take a window out, TAKE IT OUT- all of it! There wasn't a properly vented window at this fire until 5:15.
3. This fire was begging for a 2.5 during that whole "spray it through the windows instead of going inside and getting it" routine.
4. This house was savable. And that's a damn shame.

They could have went right into the second story window with the master stream on a quint...Just saying.

Doesn't Hobart have a ladder truck? Or do they just not use them?
Jack177Off 1 year ago
They do have one, but I have no idea why it was not there. I am guessing it is due to manpower, they only have 2 firefighters to an engine.
mabas21 1 year ago
@mabas21 really? the should at least have 3 FF to a engine

They run 3 staffed engines with 2 to 3 guys, 3 als ambulances and a BC car. The tower quint and tanker and brush truck staffed as needed.
Response times well within nfpa 1710

A tower or quint master stream would have been nice to have pull up on scene.
