Yagyu Shingan was developed based on techniques used in war, not just duels. Consider that in a war anything goes. If throwing your sword creates an avenue for attack, then it is a solid option. I have also seen it in a few different styles.
I can hear Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu coming from the other kaijo :D
The Yagyu Shingan sensei looks like Shimazu sensei... it's great to see these kata, usually we see only taijutsu and yoroi kumuichi from this style. Thanks a lot for posting these!
I liked the way he threw his Saya, if he got good Taijutsu he may use it in some circumstances.I also do not believe that Samurai had to hold his sword all the time, this is a belief of after Meiji restoration when samurai lost their bushi soul. Nice video, thank you.
Hello Mekugi, I'm a Kendo practitioner and even a time ago practiced some sort of Kenjutsu, but I think this one wasn´t legitimate. Unfortunately in my country doesn't exist kenjutsu schools, and I like to learn it. Do you know if the Yagyu Shingan have some kind of videos or web site? I feel than practicing only Kendo didn´t fill my needs in the "art of the sword" Thank you very much for posting this great videos.
Is it an elemental part of yagyu shingan ryu to use the saya like this? Or are there just a few technichques like those they showed there? It looks kinda interesting. Really bad there are no kenjutsu schools around my place...
@koopava actually its a specific technique. called empi if im not mistaken. in a life or death situation its less likely that they would have been so very stiff and formal, and all the more likely they would have done whatever it took to come home alive, sword throwing included.
Believe that the sword is supposed to be what is being hurled and not the scabbard, but those type of plastic saya are look and will come out of the belt easily.
The short dude is nice

The Yagyu Shingan sensei does not look like Shimazu sensei, he really is Shimazu sensei...

How rude, calling Shimazu Kenji yoda!
DanAkesson 3 years ago
I wouldn't call it to his face..Though Yoda is a cool cat though. ^_^

@FredDude27 Heehee! Exactly! Shimazu Kenji wins the best-dressed-in-budo award in my book. The guy has that wabi-sabi style....

depends...many of the Japanese styles emphasize 1 hit k.o...other cultures may focus on sustained battle.

no samurai would've ever thrown his sword after an attacker, sorry but this isn't very realistic..
koopava 4 years ago
Hmm...then why do so many ryuha have "sword throwing" in it? I know of at least three personally, including this one. All of them koryu bujutsu.

Have you asked any Samuari lately?
Seanuk 3 years ago
There is the Samurai in England: Karl Beattie.
He doesn't have his full wit obviously as the title of Samurai was abolished quite some time ago. Yet he claims he is a "legal" samurai. Daft twit!
