It's ok. No one can hit that high note - - but Bruce and that guy from Dixies' Midnight Runners.. Tuning? What is the crazy-ass Bruce-o-Matic tuning on this?
@PHYZOE thanks. curious what part of my commentary you find debatable-- Cockburn himself has said it's written from the perspective of someone living in first century jerusalem.
Thanks for this and cheers! I didn't read your note or see the capo position and was trying to play it drop D C1....the tuning in your memo is key of course. I only play a few of Bruce's tunes; I remember a fingerpicking tune - Foxglove - that was an alternate tuning in C. Here in the buckle of the bible belt - Tulsa OK - we define as a fundamentalist someone who views scripture as written BY God. A non-fundamentalist evangelical believes instead that the Word is God-breathed. Not to quibble!
@ncrowson thanks for your comment. I suppose it's no surprise that people in the bible belt have especially exacting standards concerning who qualifies as a fundamentalist. cheers.
This is impressive. Very faithful to the original. And a beautiful song. I *love* the sound of your guitar.
I wouldn't say that Bruce had a "fundamentalist period." He did identify as a Christian (and may still do so), but "fundamentalist" is a word best reserved for a certain kind of faith that Bruce never espoused. (That being said, he had quite a few evangelical fans -- and still does.) These songs were influenced by the writings of Charles Williams & C.S. Lewis.
Thanks for your comments. Our disagreement may be over the definition of 'fundamentalist'. I used to have a bootleg form this era where Cockburn describes agonizing over the release of 'Creation Dream'. He worried that the song's lyrics were untrue, as they deviated from gold standard of truth-- the good book (Genesis specifically). Using the Bible as your metric of truth is fundamentalism, as I define the term. I believe he's since described himself as fundamentalist during that era.
Thanks. I was not aware of that. One of these days, I hope that somebody writes a full-length biography of Cockburn. Heck, I'd love to write that bio myself, once I'm done my PhD in history (which focuses on the relationship between religion and Canadian youth radicalism in the sixties and early seventies -- an intersection that in some small way included Bruce Cockburn). :)
Well done! Thank you, that tune and lyric bring peace to a hectic life.

@bdouvill by the way, Cockburn has signed a deal with a publisher to produce his memoirs, due next year I believe.
