Thank You! I've been searching for this song which went around in my head, heart, and soul, 35 years long, and I'm totally happy that times have changed not always and everywhere to the worse. thanks to youtube, buffy and gewajega
I went to Saskatchewan in 1984, I have friends there. We went for the day to Qu'Appelle Valley. So it's nice hearing a song about somewhere I've been, the fact that it's such a great song is even better.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this. The album this is from (Sweet America) has been out of print for years, doesn't seem to be available on CD, I have it on vinyl, it is a treasure, I love this song so much! Buffy's powwow rock style is wonderful! So is your video!
Buffy is the pride of Piapot First Nation located in the heart of the Qu' Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan. If you look up a town called Fort Qu'Appelle,Saskatchewan...east of Regina, Then you will see where the valley is located. I was born and raised in the Qu'Appelle Valley on my home reserve, Pasqua First Nation. I have loved Buffy's music since I was a small child!
The pride of my Rez, The Piapot Cree First Nation. Buffy makes me proud of my birthplace. Some images of our beautiful Qu'Appelle valley in the video wouldhave been nice.
My fave singer. Seen her live in London in 1973 and not again until July this year. And she's back again in January '10. Spoiling me and am loving it. Wrap me in your blanket.....xxx
Saw buffy in london in c. 93 - she stunned me like bjork years later.adore this song and guess who i saw in paris. hope i will see her in uk again. love to all you buffy fans xxx
I've loved her since I was a girl and have seen her in concert. This song reminds me of home and family, it makes me happy but also can bring me to tears. Love it..
You've seen her. I envy you. What are your favourite albums and songs. I'm a little Native, my grandfather was halfbreed...as tho that''s something. But more impotant let me know about the music...all the best, Briar
Without to be a dreamer I have sometime more to realize, that she hit my heart with this song very deeply - that what not every musican that I like could say from itselves.
I loved this song from the Red Box version and thanks to the power of the internet's good side have found my way to the original artist - what an amazing and interesting woman! A new world of music and art to discover.
I used to sing this song to my baby daughter when she was tiny wrapped up in a blanket and dancing around
Even at a distance of 5,000 Miles from Saskatchewan, this song reaches every part of the body - from the feet through the heart into the head ...
I heard it 22 years ago and since then occasionally thought of it, but never knew lyrics nor title nor artist.
- Thanks sooo much to Gewajega for posting and thanks to everyone who shares the joy of listenning to it; esp. to hitomusic who showed this nice detail at 2:50 - and, of course, to the great Buffy Sainte-Marie (and her background vocalists)
Beautiful song & beautiful country, I drive by there on my way to Lac St. Anne, AB from Winnipeg, where there is a religious catholic Aboriginal pilgrimage every year. We get out of the truck and look at the land on the side of the highway and imagine there are no fences, no farms, just us and the sounds of the land. I tell my daughter this was once OURS (yes I'm FN), imagine just us and the animals around. NOTHING. Then a SEMI drives by to ruin the moment blaring their horn. SERVES ME RIGHT EH?
The opening vocal line is just unreal fabulous. It's pure electricity;the Native American vocal patterns in this intensely fabulous song completely beyond measure. Her voice is other-worldly magic.Truly one of the greatest recordings of all time in the history of music. And, amazingly, it is relatively obscure. She slides her voice upwards on the last part of the word 'Saskatchewan' (2:50-2:51)).Pouring her heart out about her home-her ancestral place of origin. The lyrics so utterly beautiful.
What a wonderful listener are you. I had noticed that slight incline myself, just one of the many nuances of this wonderful singer. Hey, check out the new video of Buffy, entitled "No No Keshagesh." Thirty years later and she's still moving us toward the gods.
Folk-Metal. on one of buffys vidz i said it was kind of like a subdued version the folk metal used to keep cultures alive in europe. and that you guys could use folk metal to do the same thing! and some people who dont care about Cree cultural survival gave the thumbs down. why dont they want the world to know Cree world? the stories, the heroes, the land! ......vid:."Eluveitie-Inis Mona"
It is intensely beautiful, isn't it. The repeating chorus. The thumping beat. The group vocals supporting her. Her voice rising high above and soaring through so crystal clear.
thank you a million times for posting this song. I've been looking for it it seems like forever, meaning since I saw the movie "Spirit of the Wind" (which, for all the looking I've done, I cannot find anywhere).
Thanks so much for posting this!!! It's never been available on CD and it is one of my all-time favorites of Buffy's songs. From the album "Sweet America" which has several other great songs in similar (powwow rock) style. Why isn't this album reissued on CD?? Thanks again!
And thank you for the designation, "powwor rock" style, very apt. Now I can put a name to what I have loved for decades now. This is a wonderfully uplifting song. I recently bought a CD, recently released, that includes three of her albums on it: Buffy, Sweet America (from which this song is taken), and Changing Woman. Much good here. Just listen to "Eagle Man Changing Woman" and you'll be hooked.
A few months back I searched for Buffy's "Tall Trees in Georgia," but didn't find it by her, though I did find Eva Cassidy (RIP) singing the song. It was pleasing to hear others singing Buffy's songs--and to good effect. Buffy Sainte-Marie and Joni Mitchell are my two favorite singers--and both from Cananda! Must be something in the water.HAHA Loved this video. Thanks for posting it.
Love Joan Baez, too. I was about 13 when "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" hit the airwaves. From there I began to buy new and old music from, as you aptly say, the Queen. She, like Buffy Sainte-Marie, has kept her integrity as, to use a phrase from E. M. Forster, an "imperialist of the air." The only legitimate imperialism. A great day to you.
Baez was on the cover of Time (unheard of for female vocalists at the time, esp a 22 year old) a couple years before Buffy even recorded. Both Joni and Buffy have recalled their early fascination with Joan. So have: Janis Ian, Emmylou, Laura Nyro, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Rondstadt, Patti Smith, Lucinda Williams etc etc etc. Buffy is a TOTAL GENIUS in her own right though and is the only true ROCKER among the Folk Divas.
I first heard this song almost 30 years ago, by which time I was already a lifelong fan. Ms. Sainte-Marie got me through the hard teen years, and I've been "dancing the rainbow" ever since. Thanks for "putting us up where we belong," you magnificent gift to the world.
I first heard this song on Radio 1 (Janice Long) over 20 years ago and have been looking for it ever since. It's been re-issued and you can get it from Amazon.
I first heard this song performed by the British electro band Red Box -- very different, but also strange and wonderful. Then years later I found out it was by Buffy, and heard her version. Magnificent!
Well said! I'm from rural Kentucky, where Buffy Sainte-Marie is hardly known. I've always been a little smug about Buffy, only because she's so special. Makes me proud to read a comment from someone who can claim the kinship of place. "Off into outer space you go..." Best!
this is one of my favorite songs by Buffy. She is the pioneer singer/writer/artist for Native Americans and I am so happy tho have met her. She is a very classy lady, humble and very gracious!
this is one of my most favourite songs ever written from the heart, and Buffy is one of best singers/musicians ever because she always sings from the heart.
thanks so much for posting this song....it speaks for so many of us...(wherever our 'Qu'appelle valley, SK' may be)

This is one of the greatest recordings of all time. What an amazing song. The vocal (Buffy St. Marie) is spine-tingling; hair-raising. The lyrics are beautifully crafted to the music.
