Umm, when you turned on Image stabilization did you drop it to 720p@60fps. Or did you figure it would just magically maintain frame transitions at 1080p. Did you actually read the manual during your extensive research...?

In normal even light (walking around outdoors at college, or indoors at home) the kodak is fine. 2nd, it encodes audio to aac. Thats a pretty common. Quicktime, iMovie, and Final Cut on my Macbook recognize it. Even my ancient Sony Vaio desktop running Moviemaker recognizes it. I shoot with this thing every day. Not perfect, but great for vlogging.

Eventually mine developed a battery fault and I sent it back to Amazon, and bought a Panasonic TA-1 instead. It was cheaper, and better quality.
Nice presentation NP. I bought a Zi8 for recording loud bands with an AT PRO24CM mounted to a tripod. You can see some examples at my page. You can use the program that comes with the camera to edit it. I did.

It uses *standard* AVC video and ACC audio so what is the problem !?!?

Try Pinnacle studio HD sweet heart, Not the best editing software, I have final cut studio 2 which cost 1.250.00 euros and it is a pig at times, plug whatever you like into Pinnacle which costs 70 euros and everything works !!
this camera is well worth the money. infact bestbuy are doing them for £75 now which is great! it works well with a mac using imovie or even with the builtin software using windows. this chick has no idea what she is talking about, typical yanks get themselves on youtube and like hearing their own voices by talking loads of shit!

Nixie: There is a chance your problem can be fixed by installing Quicktime, but some people using Camtasia with the same problem also found solutions by installing the K-lite codecs.
1. To fix the image problem put it in 720p/60fps. The 720p/60fps and the 1080p are not much different on this camera and the picture is much better. Also, you have an EXTREMELY shaky hand because even in 1080p i don't have that much of a problem.
2. I use WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER!!!!! That's pretty much the simplest program ever and everything works perfect. I don't know why your having problems, because i never do.

Nixie, I have Sony Vegas 9 (not pro). I have always used .mov files and it reads them just fine. I believe the problem is that your version of vegas (8.0) is too old, even though it probably cost you much more than for what I paid, seeing as how my version is not pro. I hope this helps :D

I too get frustrated by the MOV. files. You're pretty much stuck with the movie editing software that came with it. Some programs I've used will work with any camera but the kodak camera. :( Be sure to check before you buy! It's good for going to the library and recording chapters from my textbooks which saves me the expense of having to purchase expensive school textbooks which makes it worth the money for me. But if you want to record a ufo or something.. it's useless.

@camtheman499videos she is not that bad, she is giving the real guts on the camera. sure imovie works because .mov is a apple codec. mac owners are only 10% of computer owners, .mov is not a widely used codec. it would be better to use a common used codecs as h.264 or .mp4 or something so that windows folks and others can use it. .mov is a really demanding codec, it uses a lot of memory and you have to use quicktime to view them. only a few editing apps can handle .mov.

Good man, I hate all these ball-less guys who idealise women. They're just people like everyone else. These videos would get 2 and a half views if it was a guy and literally nobody would hold back their criticisms. However, I don't think 90% of the people who watch these videos watch for the information anyway. You're right about this, you could easily put the .mov container through MeGUI if you so desperately wanted to have the video in a different container such as MPEG4 or AVI.
Also, you could simply use VLC or even just get a codec pack to run MOV, but seriously it isn't that much of an exotic container, lots of different media players can run it as long as you have a big enough brain to write in "Best Media Player" into Google.

Hi, I recieved an RCA EZ1000 from Marlboro dot com a few minutes ago. I looked at the package and was so underwhelmed I just pitched it back into the shipping carton for proper disposal later. Looking on Ebay, I saw the zi8 at around $90 or so. Twi lithium battery packs with a charger around $12. Even a cheap magnetic mount wide angle lense.
Per that deplorable quicktime? Try Badaboom. Convert to DivX at warpspeed with CUDA assist.

It's rather annoying that it's one of the few shoot-and-share cameras with an external audio input, yet has a proprietary audio codec that makes editing difficult (two steps forward, three steps back).
4:35 advertisement by the producer might not the best way to get information on a product. The only useful information that the producer provides is the sheet with the technical details. For everything else, there are reviews.
Apparently you've never heard of Quicktime Pro which would allow you to easily convert this MOV to an editable Windows format. Also, Mac's recognize it natively. By the way, I'm not a big Apple fan and don't edit photo or video for a living or even as a hobby and I know this, so your overly one-sided view is disturbing for someone who professes to know technology so well.
It seems that quite likely un-intentionally...you showcased the camera in the worst possible "low light environments"..and oddly enough you show us nightlife while you indicate that its great for landscapes..why not show that?
The other feature that every..and I mean every other reviewer has gone totally wild over was the external 1/4" microphone jack port..the only one in this category..

i got the zi8 and i love it, i use adobe premiere pro, and it works beautifully. .mov comes out as a quicktime player file which is what i was under the impression is one of best qualities to render as
the white balance issue you pointed out is not even a white balance issue, it's an exposure issue. in your video example, it was overexposing the person under the stage spotlight because the lens was automatically metering for the rest of the frame, hence why the rest of it was correctly exposed.

The Samsung HMX H100 was reviewed by CNET and ZDNET as a "poor camcorder". It's possible that you may need to get your eyes checked or get new glasses/contacts. Do you work for Samsung, hon? LOL
Your example of poor white balance was actually an example of incorrect exposure. White balance is to do with the colour of the lighting (Without white balance, artificial light looks orangey) Your example shows the device averaging the exposure for the ambient lighting and overexposing the skin tones.
I think you'll do great in broadcasting, but unfortunately, not for consumer report LOL Kodak zi8 is now about $140, while the Samsung HMX H100 is about TWICE as that. You're comparing apples and desks, hon. Now, tell me, can you name a $150 dollar HD pocket cam that can do BETTER than a Kodak Zi8? That's the question.
This camcorder is designed for use in daylight. For that purpose, and at it's cheap price, it is perfect. Get an external microphone as well for superior audio if needed. Cheap Sony mic's available on eBay for a few pounds.
sony vegas doesn't recognize ALOT of audio formats and that sucks... what you can do is just convert the audio to wav or 320k mp3 and then it's not a prob
@JeffXBL I use DVDFab, just process audio only, not video... it'll go SUPER fast too. I usually convert my audip to 320kbps quality mp3, then drop that in Sony Vegas
if you could split the audio and video file apart i think you could probably change it in something like super c but that would prob be alot of work for no particular reason that would be my best guess ,give this video a thumbs up =D especially if you like lama's!
I personally use Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 and I have absolutely no problems with audio or video.
I personally think that for the size and price point, it does a great job. Sure there are better cameras out there, but for the price, I can't really complain.
That's not a white balance issue, it's an iris/shutterspeed issue. White balance is related to color, not brightness. Are there manual settings for the fstop/shutterspeed? If so you could solve the problem.
Anyway, good review, I was considering buying one of those, & this has been very informateve.

Yegods. Try the K-Lite codecs, or convert your file before importing to Sony Vegas using something "super-expensive" like Quicktime Pro.

Download Any Video Converter. Then change the format to .wmv. Then you can put in Sony Vegas. I do this all the time with my iPod and it will work.

Good man, I hate all these ball-less guys who idealise women. They're just people like everyone else. These videos would get 2 and a half views if it was a guy and literally nobody would hold back their criticisms. However, I don't think 90% of the people who watch these videos watch for the information anyway. You're right about this, you could easily put the .mov container through MeGUI if you so desperately wanted to have the video in a different container such as MPEG4 or AVI.

Also, you could simply use VLC or even just get a codec pack to run MOV, but seriously it isn't that much of an exotic container, lots of different media players can run it as long as you have a big enough brain to write in "Best Media Player" into Google.

Hi, I recieved an RCA EZ1000 from Marlboro dot com a few minutes ago. I looked at the package and was so underwhelmed I just pitched it back into the shipping carton for proper disposal later. Looking on Ebay, I saw the zi8 at around $90 or so. Twi lithium battery packs with a charger around $12. Even a cheap magnetic mount wide angle lense.
Per that deplorable quicktime? Try Badaboom. Convert to DivX at warpspeed with CUDA assist.

It's rather annoying that it's one of the few shoot-and-share cameras with an external audio input, yet has a proprietary audio codec that makes editing difficult (two steps forward, three steps back).

Apparently you've never heard of Quicktime Pro which would allow you to easily convert this MOV to an editable Windows format. Also, Mac's recognize it natively. By the way, I'm not a big Apple fan and don't edit photo or video for a living or even as a hobby and I know this, so your overly one-sided view is disturbing for someone who professes to know technology so well.

It seems that quite likely un-intentionally...you showcased the camera in the worst possible "low light environments"..and oddly enough you show us nightlife while you indicate that its great for landscapes..why not show that?
The other feature that every..and I mean every other reviewer has gone totally wild over was the external 1/4" microphone jack port..the only one in this category..
yeah some ( now I am going to subtly show you how much I know about codecs)
but thats it.

i got the zi8 and i love it, i use adobe premiere pro, and it works beautifully. .mov comes out as a quicktime player file which is what i was under the impression is one of best qualities to render as

.mov is not a 'bizzare' format.
the white balance issue you pointed out is not even a white balance issue, it's an exposure issue. in your video example, it was overexposing the person under the stage spotlight because the lens was automatically metering for the rest of the frame, hence why the rest of it was correctly exposed.
nice review, but you need to research more before making false claims.

If you need to convert the audio to use in Vegas Video or any other video editing program, you will need to convert the MOV to DVD MPEG 2 Format.
This is done with most video converting programs.
I did it with Allok MPEG Convert.
It will work fine with any video editing program.

The Samsung HMX H100 was reviewed by CNET and ZDNET as a "poor camcorder". It's possible that you may need to get your eyes checked or get new glasses/contacts. Do you work for Samsung, hon? LOL

Your example of poor white balance was actually an example of incorrect exposure. White balance is to do with the colour of the lighting (Without white balance, artificial light looks orangey) Your example shows the device averaging the exposure for the ambient lighting and overexposing the skin tones.

This camcorder is designed for use in daylight. For that purpose, and at it's cheap price, it is perfect. Get an external microphone as well for superior audio if needed. Cheap Sony mic's available on eBay for a few pounds.

sony vegas doesn't recognize ALOT of audio formats and that sucks... what you can do is just convert the audio to wav or 320k mp3 and then it's not a prob

I personally use Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 and I have absolutely no problems with audio or video.
I personally think that for the size and price point, it does a great job. Sure there are better cameras out there, but for the price, I can't really complain.

"White balance" is color adjustment for tungsten, fluorescent or outdoor light source. Not a contrast or exposure.

That's not a white balance issue, it's an iris/shutterspeed issue. White balance is related to color, not brightness. Are there manual settings for the fstop/shutterspeed? If so you could solve the problem.
Anyway, good review, I was considering buying one of those, & this has been very informateve.
