  • When i simulate my explosion, it simulates in about 5 seconds and in the preview i cant see the explosion, and when i render it i still cant see the explosion, just the floor and ball. Any ideas why?

  • @tronlaser

5 Seconds is way too short, check your emitter settings to make sure you accidently didnt turn any setting to 0. Something is not simulating

  • missing fumefx menu... can someone help?

  • render time??? :3

  • Hi! First of all good job!!!

Now, I have a problem, it's nothing to do with this tutorial, only with fumefx.

I have a fumefx grid, and a source in top. From this source, Smoke is coming out and falling down, like a shower.

My problem is that the smoke is continuallt coming down. I want it to stop atfer some time.

    Can you please help me!!!!

    Thanks alot!!! ;)

  • @masterpatfx1

In the source settings there should be a value related to fuel amount from 0-1. Just animate the value down to 0 to stop it from emitting. You can also play with the smoke amount value.

  • wow!

    Thanks for your help~

  • I've tried to render the explosion but it doesn't who up. I can see it on the preview screen but it never shows up when I'm rendering the file. How do I fix this? :/

  • @MrMadness28

When you did your render did you remember to click the save file box in the common render settings? Just make a folder somewhere easy to find and set that as the render location

  • where is that fume fx data?

  • Everything is good, but how can you add more curves to the smoke? u see smoke is very puffy, i want to make it really puffy( more curves to the smoke) making it more realistic...can i do that?

  • great tutorial but the music is annoying

  • @jergen07

Thanks, and then just mute and play your own music, I unfortunately cant appeal to everyone's tastes

  • @koolJ How about skipping the music and using a tried and true teaching technique of SPEAKING.

  • @daggergblue

There is only a small handful of people who can actually talk interestingly enough to stay focused on their tutorials when they are speaking, and even when they are the tutorials are longer than they need to be. My method is clear, to the point, and easy for all audiences to understand so I'm sticking to that.

  • @koolJ good tutorials men!!!keep up working:) and this music is so good when you are working on explosion of fumefx

  • allday.ru then search:fumefx and choose what you need fumefx for max9,2009,2010,2011,2012

  • @evil1bob

    Thx for your opinion

  • 4get that last post...didnt know they made a version of Fume just for 2012 version of 3d max...got that version and everything is right in the world...lol.

Just one question though if anyone knows....can fume add a heat dissipation type effect? Like when you look at the hood of a car on a hot day you see the heat actually rising off of it....if that makes sense....just curious.

  • @Shadownian

I don't think so, it would probably be easier to do in post.

  • Hello...good tutorial but im having a huge prob with fume fx. Ive looked everywhere i can think but cant find a solution. I cant install fumefx. I install it...it asked for the file where 3d max is installed...no problem....seems to install fine.....then I open 3d max so that I can activate it...and when I open 3d max all i get is error messages saying cant load fumefx. Im running windows 7 64b...i have 3d max 2012....any help would be appreciated

  • @Shadownian wrong version of fumefx install? are u using the crack version? if so, u need to install the crack.

  • at first i thought this song was annoying, but at the end of the tutorial i started to like it... what's the name of the song ?

  • where can i download FumeFX for 3dsmax 2011?

  • don't turn on preview, simulation is 10x faster without it

  • I don't think the music was loud enough...

  • How do i animate in 3ds max, i can't even though i set a key, do i have to use the camera to animate??

  • Size doesn't matter? Oh size matters;) No homo...

  • When i click , start simulation , 3ds max crash , help please ! :(

  • i get "you have choosen to switch to default output files, but FumeFX was not able to open C:\users\(my name)\desktop\output FumeFX\FumeFX01_0000.fxd."

does anyone know how to solve it.

  • @DaniSD

Try changing the output file location to somewhere else.

  • @DaniSD What i did. Was go to PREFERENCE in FUMEFXUI and you see the : DEFAULT OUTPUT PATH.

If you done it right you created a map earlier where your save your Output files where you got that error.

    Select that map.

    Should Work Know

  • thank u for this tutorial

  • My explosion turned out to be of baby size... What's the easiest way to fix that?

  • And you can buy this plug-in from CGArena.com Store

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for the tutorial, got me off to a good start. Just one thing though. I don't have enough time to make a cake, or cup of tea, or even go to sleep because it's done simulating in a minute and a half. Amidoinitrite?

  • thanks man

  • this cant be rendered with mental ray?????????I dont have Vray plz heelp!!!

  • @cldmusica

You can in the latest versions of FumeFX

  • @koolJ ok thanks :D

  • @cldmusica Use the scanline renderer, MentalRay doesn't support rendering most versions of FumeFX/AfterBurn.

  • Enlarge the hemisphere according to your explosion - > you went for redneck huge-ass nuclear boom :)) , good one

  • hey dude, is fumefx for 3ds max? im really confused or is it a program?

  • hey something wierds happening when i render the explosion isnt showing up could you please help me???

  • @Hardrock131 I've have this problems 2 and i dont know how to fix it.

  • @stefan171193 i got it to work somewhat with another tutorial just keep looking it wasnt on utube

  • when I press fume fx UI it just doesn't open...

  • hey.....can u tell me how to do the shadows of the smoke???

  • @jaramelo

Setup a light source (Try with a simple Directional light) , enable shadows, go to the shadow parameters and check the "Atmospheric Shadows" box. Go into the FumeFX UI to the Illumination tab, add the light source to the list. In the rendering tab for smoke, make sure Cast and Recieve shadows boxes are checked on. That should do it. If you want fire to illuminate the smoke, check the "Multi-scattering" box in the illumination tab and play with the settings.

  • megaupload com/?d=WBVXR5E8

    fumefx for free

  • when i render it says "MSG 0.0 error: Atmospheric renderer " is not supported. PLZ HELP ME

  • Ok Im having a huge problem with fume. I have version 1.0 with 3d max 9. I set everything up fine...but when it comes time to add the source to fumefx the little hand symbols arent there....if I try to expand the window...it collapses even smaller and I cant even see the objects/source part of the screen....so basically Im s.o.l. any suggestions??

  • @Shadownian

Never come across that. Have you tried re-installing fume?

  • @koolJ

Ya i tried that and everything else I could think of. I did some searching and seems Im not the only one with the problem. Know of any other 3d software that has decent fire effects or plug ins? Im trying to create flaming text with the flames actually coming off the text.....

  • @Shadownian

can u plz sendme the set up file of fumefx plugin it will be very thnxfull to me,can u friend?

  • it's 0.5, not 5 (hemisphere)

  • Thx!

  • it didnt render -.-"

  • WHERE CAN I GET FUMEFX

  • Its really cool.

  • Very good tutorial Thnx! Keep up that good work!

  • song ?

  • thank you :D

  • PLZ POST A TUTORIAL FOR RENDERING SETTINGS..i really want to render it in high quality like ur explosions...

    PLZ..!!!!

  • @ninjaduderantaro

My flamethrower tutorial covers some of the rendering settings.

  • what remix is it?

  • When i was start my fume fx and its show:

    File not found

" You have choose to switch to Default output files, but FumeFX was not able to open C:\Users\Kenneth\Documents\First 3D Tracking\FumeFXOutput\FumeFX01_00003.fxd ."

and then i start continue simulate and it shows:

    File Error

"Cannot find data to continue. Please check preferences dialog".

    What is wrong?

  • Wtf, it wont simulate my explosion. It says that "cannot find data to continue, please check preferences dialog."

  • @extenders Same problem here...did u solve it or anyone can help me :(

  • This is a very good tutorial! Thanks for that.

Just one question: what is the song's name?

  • @GCsab

Gala - Freed from Desire, although this one may be a mix of some sort.

  • @koolJ

    Thanks!

  • @koolJ a solid tune

  • how come in other test videos on youtube the smoke and fire are a million times better quality than when i render it out after your tutorial?

  • @brickharvey

The tutorial only covers the simulation aspect, not the render settings.

  • @koolJ ok thats interesting so its just how i render it out that gives it the best quality

  • FREAKIN EPIC TUT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  • Thanks. Always good to expand your fumefx techniques.

  • so i have to render it ,save the bitmap and then make 24 other frames and get it in movie maker do display it????

  • @marsling12

You can set max to auto-save each rendered frame in the Render Output section by clicking the "File..." button then selecting an output path. You can render them all to a folder, then use a program such as VirtualDub to make the rendered frames into a movie file. (this is more stable and safe than just rendering it directly to a movie file, but you can if you want in the file type options in the save menu. ) Also remember you can select a range of frames to be rendered!

  • so i cant use the fumefx effects in games? well that is....not cool :-/

  • @marsling12 Says who?

  • YOU HAVE TOUGHT ME TO AN 3DSMAX

  • the second animation is diffrent with smoke on the ground.. like shock wave.. how did you do that?

  • It's amazing how close this is to how the blender smoke system works, except for the fact that this takes much longer and the material is a little better.

What renderer did you because that's not scanline...

  • very great work.

  • Thanks So Much For This! It's going to faves!

  • DUDE I FUCKING LOVE YOU MAN, THIS WAS A PRETTY BASICLY DONE TUTORIAL BUT GODDAMIT ITS THE ONLY ONE I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FOLLOW FOR FUME FX, THANK YOU SO MUCH! you dont understand!

  • @oscarknott69

    No problem :)

  • Come see my vids when you get a chance

  • could you make a tutorial on how to make the dementor smoke like in hp movies? :D

  • @speedomike747

I need to refresh my memory but maybe!

  • how can i get to the FumeFx in the 3dmax 2010?i dont know where is it?

  • Thanks for putting this little Tut. together, really helpful!

  • I installed FumeFx a few days ago and I've got a strange and really bothering problem with it's UI.

when I open the mail UI at first it looks ok, but whenever I want to move the window, it shrinks down from right side and I can't access to many parameters. even if I don't move the window, this problem occers when I close it and open it again. At first I tought it might be because of my screen size (1280x1024) but changing the screen size also didn't help.

  • do you have to have V-Ray to render this? or will default work (i saw that mr wont) but anyway my problem is when i do this, i see no fire, not even in the preview

  • oh.. ok

  • =( I TRYED USING MENTAL RAY BUT THIS STUPID PROGRAM WONT ALLOW ME TO!! x_x

  • You need FumeFX 1.2 to use mental ray for rendering with fumefx.

  • K i try now

  • When i unclick renderable and start the rendering i only see my ball not my explosion

  • Make sure you had the ball selected when you did that and not the fumefx grid.

  • Thanks man...

  • No seriously, this is JaggerdPictures. I made a new acount.

    Can i add you?

  • I LOVE YOU!

  • Thanks! This actually worked.

  • nothing happends when I click on render...

  • @FrietjeM You need to go into the render setup.. And on "Time Output" tab you gotta choose "Range". After that, you now can render.

  • Thank you !! it is working... A little bit slow but I can see the images....

  • name of song(s)??

  • Thank you for making that tut it's really helpful ;)

  • thanks for making the tut.

  • @JaggeredPictures Yes, FumeFX is a plugin for 3DSMAX so you have to have it.

  • Thanks alot=] my ball still rendered tho haha

  • You just have to hide the ball. Right click it > hide

  • yes, but u forget something important, what about illumination with mental ray???

  • where are the rendered images saved?

  • @trent1542 You should have defined the output path for fumefx in the fumefx UI and rendered images in the render properties common tab.

  • thx!

  • How do you get the fumeFX option in the create options?

  • You have to have fumefx installed first of all.

  • I have it installed, ofcourse.

  • THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS!!

  • this fumefx ius paid???? plz help!!

  • Not sure what your asking... but you can purchase FumeFX from Afterwork's website.

  • test

  • iam only getting a black window when i try these steps

  • 1. Make sure you using a compatible renderer, (mental ray doesnt work with older versions of fumefx, but newer versions do). 2. Make sure you are actually rendering a frame , or frames where you can see the explosion or smoke. 3. Make sure you are rendering from the correct viewport or camera.

  • when i try to render mine it just renders the sphere and it doesnt move or anything... i did un-check renderable.. do i have to render out with mental ray or anything like that??? plz help.. everything is fine sept when i try to render ;p

  • update: If i turn 'renderable' back on i can see the explosion but the spherer is in the scene (which i do not want) but if i uncheck 'renderable' i cant even see the sphere.. only expl.... i think i just figured it out.. be back... XD

  • So its working? Maybe the first time you did it you accidentally unchecked renderable on the explosion and not the sphere. Anyway if you have any issues with it, you can always try just making the sphere 100% transparent with a material.

  • Yeah i got it to work :) in my infinite wisdom i did not scrub back far enough so i accidentally unchecked render for the cloud XD works good now oh and very very nice tutorial by the way, u have unlocked some new avenues for me as i am new to 3d but i am good with video editing (after effects) :)

    SO THANX!

  • you got fumefx to work in mental ray? i thought they were incompatible?

  • Newer versions of fumefx work with mental ray.

  • oh good =D although whenever i render something it renders in black and white :S for some reason

  • ya da new one is. You most likelely have an older version :)

  • plz can u add me ??? moha7-zerohour(at)hotmail plz add me to ur msn

  • I get this message when I put in the FumeFx on the grid.

FumeFX Temporary and / or default output path are invalid. Please correct.

  • You have to declare an output folder for your fumefx data to go into. In the FumeFX UI under General. You will see an output section and an area with Output Path . Click the "..." box and setup a folder for where you want your fumefx saved data to go. I show this step @3:20 in the tutorial :)

  • Thanks for this. I didn't even know how to access the plugin and now I can make explosions, Thanks

  • I managed to put some wind into it.

  • hehe its my bomb man

  • im going to try this if i can do it

this is so helpful for me thanks man

    one last thing

i know the name of that song but i want to know that exact version because i have downloaded so many versions of it

  • This is REALLY REALLY brilliant, I had the idea of trying to use this for the apparation in the latest HP Movie, And this seems to be the best there is, FumeFX+ your tutorial, If its not much to ask, Since your really good at this, Mind making a tutorial where such a smoke follows the persons walk path? Thanks a million mate!

  • There's an idea! If you explain exactly what you are talking about then perhaps I'll give it a go.

  • Well in your tutorial, You show the smoke starting off from a point, Which would be brilliant considering in the HP movie, The deatheaters apparate in the reverse order [Kinda like someone blowing smoke downwards] Id like to know if reverse order can be done in 3D or time editing in AFX. Then theres the walking part, where they walk and the fumes follow, covering their feet. Would you like me to quote a trailer link? Thanks a million mate!

  • Really It looks like you don't know what your doing most of the time and turning random spinners.

  • Care to elaborate?

  • For example, spacing: 'Setting it to lower values such as 1 will give you a higher quality explosion but longer simulation time'. No it does not it just takes the scale of the explosion down. Also changing the heat production to 15 will not give a noticeable difference and why didn't you turn sensitivity up? It 1/4's all sim time. Last point: Multiple scattering would have helped this piece greatly yet you missed it out!

  • obrigado

  • It may be that you might be on an old version of FumeFX that doesn't support vRay. I suggest you try updating to 1.2. If that doesn't work, hit 8 and in the atmosphere section under the exposure control area, add the FusionWorks Renderer to the effects list. I hope that works.

  • I used PF Source....

  • Interesting, howd that turn out?

  • Check it out (my last upload, 2 previous explosions r made with PArray)

  • Nice tut BTW,very helpful :D

  • Make sure you can see at least some part of the fumefx animation (as in the particles). Vray should work with it.

  • What render preset did you use for this? i can only get one to work and it doesn't look too good.

  • Preset? I didn't use a preset. All I can say is that I used V-ray for the other explosions shown (I had Global Illumination on for that).

  • the tut is good, but the explosion doesn't have too much fire, it's almost just smoke
